LYRICS

Verse 1

Is Trinidad
Who came up with this idea
Of building pan
Out of an empty oil drum
From oil industry garbage
They start to tune carefully
‘Til it get perfect pitch

This big idea
That’s what they showed the world now
In harmony
They started playing sweet pan
Brand new acoustic idea
They start to play in a rage
So the whole world could hear

Chorus 1

They gather in big groups to display their passion
With men and women, they playing perfectly well
Spectators come to lime as they practise their skill
They will play again and again
Pan playing, all night long

Big Idea -- In Trinidad everybody playing pan
Big Idea -- In Tobago you will see, pan is everywhere
Big Idea -- In Trinbago, this is what they living for
Big Idea -- It’s wonderful sweet,
Whenever you hear the sound of the pan playing

Verse 2

This big idea
That’s what the whole world know now
A melody
Sounding so sweet on oil drum
A sweet tropical feeling
Around the world, spreading fast
Moving so rapidly

Yes Trinidad
Is the land of the steel pan
And Calypso
Was raised from these twin islands
They all jamming this rhythm
The engine room heating up
Whole day they never stop

Chorus 2

They gather in big groups to display their passion
With men and women, they playing perfectly well
Spectators come to lime and as they practise their skill
They will play again and again
Pan playing, all night long

Big Idea -- In Trinidad everybody playing pan
Big Idea -- In Tobago you will see, pan is everywhere
Big Idea -- In Trinbago, this is what they living for
Big Idea -- It’s wonderful sweet,
Whenever you hear the sound of the pan playing

Chorus 3

They gathering in big groups to display their passion
With men and women, they playing perfectly well
Spectators come to lime as they practise their skill
They will play again and again
Pan playing, all night long

Big Idea -- In Trinidad everybody playing pan
Big Idea -- In Tobago you will see, pan is everywhere
Big Idea -- In Trinbago, this is what they living for
Big Idea -- It’s wonderful sweet,
Whenever you hear the sound of the Big Idea

Edwin “Crazy” Ayoung

Edwin “Crazy” Ayoung from Trinidad & Tobago is a master whether it’s Calypso, Parang Soca, Chutney Soca, Groovy or Power Soca!

He is an experienced performer and comfortable in social commentary, humorous calypso, witty double-entendre and party soca.

  Visit When Steel Talks

From 1985 onwards Crazy did lots of panorama pieces for top arrangers like Leon “Smooth” Edwards, Len “Boogsie” Sharpe, Jit Samaroo, Amrit Samaroo, Clive Bradley, Robbie Greenidge, Pelham Goddard and Ray Holman. The pan songs include “Band from Space,” “Sharing Licks,” “Soucouyant,” “Ramona,” “Play Yuh Self,” “Scratch Attack” and “Women in Pan” to name a few. With over 40 pan songs to his credit,  in 2008 “Crazy” set a record of 11 pan songs in a year which was never done before.

Phil Hawkins

Phil Hawkins is an accomplished jazz drummer and steel pan player. He regularly travels throughout the United States, Mexico, the Caribbean and South America to perform concerts, teach clinics and study percussion.

Originally from Topeka, Kansas, Phil completed his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in music at Wichita State University and remained as adjunct faculty, directing the Steelband and Latin Jazz Ensembles. In 1998, Phil moved to the San Francisco Bay Area where he gained a reputation as a versatile drummer. Phil currently plays with Pete Escovedo, Ray Obiedo and the Wayne Wallace Latin Jazz Quintet.

Phil has produced two of his own recordings - “H2O,” and “Sugarcane Suite” which features Randy Brecker, Ray Obiedo, “Crazy,” the VW brothers, Michael Spiro, Edgardo Cambon, and Santana keyboardist David K. Mathews.

Lars Hansson

Lars Hansson is a guitarist and steel pan player from Gothenburg, Sweden. In 1990 he founded the band Soca Rebels which is the first and only band in Sweden solely playing soca and calypso.

The band performs not only original songs and hits from Trinidad & Tobago’s Carnival but also backs up in their live performances in Sweden, artists from that country like “Crazy” - the Loveable Lunatic and Shirlane Hendrickson, 1998-2001 Calypso Queen.

Soca Rebels also function as a studio team and they have arranged and produced songs for several of “Crazy’s” album as well as for Bro. Shortman, rapso pioneer from Network Riddum Band.
