Finals Results for Small Steel Orchestras - Trinidad & Tobago National Steelband Panorama 2017 - La Horquetta Pan Groove Takes First Place With Arranger Kion Robinson
Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. - La Horquetta Pan Groove pulled off a major victory playing De Fosto’s ‘In De Minor’ arranged by Kion Robinson. The pan musicians are the new champions in the Small steel orchestra category for their country’s 2017 Panorama season. Winning arranger Kion Robinson has worked with the band since 2011, while the music organization itself is no stranger to winner’s row, having had a five-year reign as Single Pan Band Champions from 2006–2010. They moved up to the small steel orchestra category in 2011 in the then-first-time Panorama collaboration with Robinson.
In winning the title, La Horquetta Pan Groove dethroned 2016 title-defenders Arima Golden Symphony which had to settle for second place. Tying for second were Laventille Serenaders which came second for the second year in a row. The fifteen small steel orchestras were those who were successful through to the finals, after the semi-finals, and from the original field of forty-five which participated in the preliminaries.
The musical battle came off on the evening of Thursday 23 February and played out at Skinner Park in South Trinidad.
For the first time in years, it appeared that there was neither an online or even audio stream available, so that pan lovers around the globe were unable to enjoy the show while rooting for their favorite performers. Another change-up was the appearance of the small steel orchestras in final competition by themselves instead of the customary combined musical showcase with the Single Pan Band finals. The latter instead wrapped up their 2017 competition season back on January 29.
Following are the full results for the fifteen Small Steel Orchestra finalists.
