ADLIB Steel
Orchestra
Makes It Just A Bit Hotter
at Waterside Plaza
New York-
Normally when the temperature is already extremely hot, no one
appreciates any scenario that heats things up more. But
certainly, for the residents and members of the public who were at the Waterside Plaza
Summer Concert Series on Tuesday August 1, the scintillating steelband sounds of
ADLIB Steel Orchestra were very welcome, even on the almost-stiflingly
hot summer afternoon in the midst of the first official 2006 New York
heat wave.
Like it's name suggests,
Waterside Plaza is beside a body of water - on the banks of the East River - to be
exact. The slightly cooling breeze coming off the water allowed
some type of relief in the heated afternoon. Whatever the weather,
it did not deter those present for the concert from enjoying themselves
immensely. Not even a hotter-than-usual afternoon would prevent a
few of the onlookers later on from taking to their feet and dancing while ADLIB
played.
With the United Nations
International School (UNIS) situated next to Waterside Plaza, and UN
Headquarters and related agencies themselves less than twenty blocks
away, many respective personnel and families constitute a
major sector of the Plaza's residents. And a significant number of
those UN personnel
and their families hail from various parts of the world; Waterside
Plaza Community Activities Director Yenneca Ketzis
(left) told
When
Steel Talks
that for a considerable time, people "had been asking for a steeldrum
band to be included" in the line-up of artists for the Plaza's summer
concert series. One resident in the company of her daughter,
shared with
When
Steel Talks that she had seen steel
orchestra performances in the Caribbean, and welcomed having ADLIB Steel
Orchestra in concert - literally right on her doorstep.
ADLIB opened up promptly at
the scheduled time of 7:00 PM with a
familiar selection popularized by the Swedish super group ABBA in the
seventies- Dancing Queen. They followed up with a mix of
pop, soca and R&B for the evening's musical fare. One selection
that struck a particular chord with the audience was a funkified version of one of
Beethoven's
more popular pieces - Fur Elise. At the end of their first set, Yenneca Ketzis
once again introduced ADLIB to the spectators, especially for those who
had come in while the concert was already underway.
During their second set,
ADLIB delivered a solid rendition of their 2006 panorama selection, De Fosto's Tribute to Bradley.
The New York panorama steelband music concert where ADLIB and about
eleven other New York steel orchestras will compete, is being held as
usual in the car park behind the Brooklyn Museum on September 2.
The musical arrangement of ADLIB's version of Tribute to Bradley
so far makes it one to watch for the 2006 panorama season. This
year the orchestra has delved in-house for arranging talent, with
ADLIB's youthful veteran player and musician Andre White
(pictured in white T-shirt), taking on
the coveted position of arranger, with assistance from Mr. Michael George. White was on drums
during the Waterside Plaza gig, and in fact was responsible for
arranging all the music showcased that evening. The two-hour music extravaganza
featuring ADLIB steel orchestra came to an end a few minutes after nine
that evening.
Yenneca Ketzis told
When
Steel Talks that the
Waterside Plaza Summer Concert Series had featured a number of
artists already for the summer, including swing band George Gee,
Lindy Hop dancers The Big Apple Lindy Hoppers, and Cuban
orchestra Yerason. Concerts for the 2006 season run through
August 22, and upcoming performers include the Harlem-based Brawner
Brothers Band who have backed up the legendary BB King and many other
top artists.
