CLIVE BRADLEY –
The Spirit of Panorama and More
by - GB - When Steel Talks
New York - The pan world has lost it's signature
voice. Bradley embodied the spirit of panorama. It's
inconceivable to envision panorama without him. Somewhere
seeping through the canopies, you'll hear echoes of his
artistry. His articulate phrasing, majestic harmonies and
syncopated rhythms will be present in the music of current and
future arrangers for generations. The legend will live.

CLIVE BRADLEY –
JUST REMEMBER THE MUSIC!
by - AH - When Steel Talks
New York -
In Julius Caesar,
Shakespeare wrote of the Roman warrior “The evil that men do lives
after them; the good is oft interred with their bones.” So let it
not be with Clive Bradley. I implore us all to remember the
music that Bradley provided for us, the lion’s share of which was
played on the pan.
Clive Bradley was
renowned in the pan community for his arrangements for the likes of
Pandemonium and Nutones, but he is mostly associated with the
Desperadoes Steel Orchestra. Somehow Bradley was able to capture
musically the pulse of the people of Lavantille Hill and communicate
the essence of the people to the audience. The audiences were
invariably moved, as evidently were the judges.

Delta State to debut new
Steel Drum Band
By Woodrow Wilkins Jr.
CLEVELAND - An instrument that traces
its origins to 19th century gang wars in the Caribbean has found a
home in the hearts of some young people at Delta State University.
And now, just two months removed from its first meeting, the DSU
Steel Drum Band is preparing for its campus debut on Thursday at the
Bologna Performing Arts Center.
Larry Bradford, assistant band director and teacher of all
percussion instruments, said the concert will include calypso,
popular music and some Christmas songs. The DSU Percussion Ensemble

Despers mourns Bradley’s death
By
Michelle Loubon
Trinidad - As news of Clive Bradley’s
death spread through the pan fraternity, friends, stalwarts and
pannists began streaming into the Desperadoes’ panyard yesterday.
Bradley
died after suffering a stroke. He was admitted to Port-of- Spain
General Hospital on Wednesday. He also suffered from hypertension.
He died
at 6 am, yesterday.
At
Desperadoes panyard yesterday evening, several panmen deemed
Bradley’s passing an “irreplaceable loss” as they paid glowing
tribute to the arranger.
Visibly
shaken, Desperadoes captain Bertram Glasgow said:
“This
is a great loss to us. It sent shockwaves through the entire camp.
Some of the men broke down. Some of them are trying to be strong.
This is a really big one. He is the legend of this place.”

BY
SASHA MOHAMMED
Trinidad -
Easily
one of the most important music figures in the history and
development of the steelband movement and T&T’s culture, Bradley was
a prolific composer and charismatic educator, scholar and steelband

He
was recognized all over the world, bringing to the society and art
form a sense of social significance and savant that no other could.
In
the 40-plus years he was involved in the pan movement, he achieved
success on every level, and was most noted for his works with the

Master musician Clive Bradley dies
Terry Joseph
Trinidad - Master musician Clive Bradley,
internationally revered for his work as arranger for the Witco
Desperadoes steel orchestra, passed away yesterday at Port of Spain
General Hospital, four days after suffering a stroke at home.
As news of his passing spread,
calls, queries and tributes poured in from everywhere. The Sunday
Express received telephone calls from Cliff Alexis of Northern
Illinois University, fellow keyboardist Raf Robertson in Washington
DC, career pan fan Gaston Maloney from Grand Cayman, and Pamberi's
Nestor Sullivan.
Dr Pat Bishop's description of
Bradley embraced all the emotions that surfaced yesterday. "He
bestrode the world of the arranger like a Colossus," Dr Bishop said.
"Nobody handled the minor-key mode like Bradley. Nobody could make
you weep at Panorama which, of course, is supposed to be a time of
unbridled joyousness, but he captured the tragic underside of the
human condition and gave it a voice that was utterly awesome,
authentic and Trinidadian.

US steelpan tuner

A fortune from pan
Terry Joseph
Trinidad - While superior Trini artisans
retail each of their tenor pans for TT$3,500, complaining at times about
declining sales, an American pan manufacturer who sells the same type
of instrument at US$5,000 apiece is doing so well, one of its two owners
recently acquired a Ferrari F 430, currently valued at US$200,000.
But another American, Pheonix
Police Sheriff Charles "Chuck" County, who runs a 75-member
steelband in Arizona, is so pissed at the idea that Panyard Inc of
Akron, Ohio, can boast a waiting list of eight months and capitalise
the US market at their prices, he flew to Trinidad to set up a
strategic alliance with Pan Trinbago, so the Land of the Steelband
can compete in the clearly lucrative continental market.

Tobago steelbands pay
tribute to Anesia
Tobago, W.I.
-
Tobago steelbands will join pan sides from all over the nation
in paying tribute to youthful Anesia Simon who was shot to death at the
Simple Song Panyard in Arima, last August.
Tobagonian Patrick Arnold who heads the national steelbands
movement told the Tobago News, "Pan Trinbago will be staging nationwide
steelband concerts at all pan yards as a Christmas gift to the people
and we will be dedicating the event in memory of our young panist Anesia
Simon who was gunned down after a steelband practice session." Arnold
said he expected all Tobago steelbands to be part of the event.
The Pan Trinbago president expressed deep concern on the
direction of the nation's youth. He recalled, with regard to Tobago,
that: "in years gone by the Tobago youths could have looked forward to
representing the island in many sporting and social events and there was
a thriving cultural fraternity with lots of activities taking place." He
felt that such activities helped to stabilise the youth population.

'Rite of Spring' Blooms
Connecticut -
In my time as a student at
the University of Hartford, I have seen some of the more remarkable and
unforgettable musical performances showcased by the Hartt School; from
the mind-blowing abstract and practically interactive experience of the
John Cage tribute to the refreshing upbeat Steel Drum concert.
It was perhaps not until this year, though, that Symphony Conductor
Christopher Zimmerman believed the group ready to perform his
previously-conducted representation of Stravinsky's famous "Rite of
Spring," which remains to date one of the most difficult pieces of music
to play.

North Dakota -
Ten
people, of visible ages from teens to 60s, are sitting in a
circle, knees wrapped around conga drums. Their faces are
solemn, and their arms move in mesmerizing unison. The
pulsing sounds from 10 pairs of hands pounding on drums
reverberate in a rousing tribal chorus.
“Let gravity do the work,” intones the slender young man in
charge, his voice deep and soothing. “You should feel as if

Exciting finale to NIFCA
Performing Arts Finals
By David Hinkson
Barbados - The National
Independence Festival of Creative Arts (NIFCA) lived up to its motto
The tradition of excellence continues as yet another capacity crowd
filled the Frank Collymore Hall on the fourth and final night of the
NIFCA Performing Arts Finals and enjoyed a good night s
entertainment.
The Combermere School Steel Orchestra got the show off to a strong
start with two pieces. The first one, Pan Dingolay , was a Dwain
Gill arrangement dedicated to prominent steel pan tutor and arranger
Glenroy Patches Mendoza who died earlier this year. The second
piece, Pan by Storm , arranged by Jason Williams, was an interesting
piece with a lot of changes in its melody as it progressed. The
steel pan vibes continued with 14-year-old Mistral Baldeo, who
played with maturity belying her tender age and really got into the
spirit of her music. She played two pieces, Sound of the Ghost,
First Movement and South American Sojourn , and was accompanied by
Sarif on percussion, Andre Forde on drums, Stefan Walcott on
keyboards and Justin Worrell on bass.
