“The
Bradley Years”
The
Bradley Years represent the definitive collection
of steelband music arrangements and performances
for a large steel orchestra. This collection
showcases seven classic arrangements from the
master arranger Clive Bradley. Bradley
is considered to be the best steelband music
arranger ever by many, including his peers.
In addition, the arrangements are performed
by one of the finest steelbands in the world,
New York’s Pantonic Steel Orchestra. Clive Bradley
had a very special relationship with Pantonic.
This orchestra clinched the title of panorama
champions five times in seven years - performing
Bradley’s musical works. The performances
were captured by Basement Recordings days before,
and in one instance, mere moments before they
took the stage for the prestigious annual steelband
music panorama competition.
The recordings
capture, reproduce and present an unrivalled
clarity with sonic realism, of a large steel
orchestra fielding between one hundred and one
hundred twenty musicians - unlike any other
steelband music recordings in its class.
This body of musical work is a sterling addition
for all fans, educators, players, historians
and fine music collectors.

The best of the best,
New York Panorama Drummers
|
New
York,
USA - The man who anchors a New York
steelband panorama performance is of a special
breed. He is not just a drummer. The fortunes of
up to ninety-nine other performing musicians (or
in the case of Trinidad & Tobago, one hundred
and nineteen) in his steel orchestra over which
he presides, rests on his competence, skill set,
nerves and vision. And well beyond his expected
time-keeper duties, he is Mr. Excitement, Mr.
Punctuator and Mr. Tempo for a ten-minute
musical piece that the panorama world would be
critiquing for a very long time.

the students different kinds of percussion
instruments. The event also featured two door
prize events and opened with a performance by
the UND Steel Pan Band.
Throughout the day the audience was treated to
three different clinics set up by each guest,
with an emphasis on their specialty in the
percussion field. Among these professionals was
Liam Teague, who wowed the crowd with his

Steel drums celebrate life
|
California, USA
- Exotic, joyful sounds emanate from a
room at Del Norte High School about once a week
during after-school hours. It's the rhythm of
about 15 students exuberantly keeping time as
they hammer away on steel drums.
”These are real oil drums,” said Dan Sedgwick,
Del Norte High School music director.
An oil drum may seem an unlikely instrument, but
50 to 60 years ago in the Republic of Trinidad
and Tobago, they became -- out of necessity --
the predominant means of making music. Christy
Lynn Rust, Del Norte High School band and choir
director from 1978-2008 said that as British
colonies, the government “took away native
instruments to hold them in check.”
The resourceful natives found biscuit tins,
which they pounded on until they graduated to
oil drums. “Full-size oil barrels” were
converted into a type of drum, Sedgwick said.
Over there, he noted, “the super bowl is playing
in a steel band.”

New York Mayor Bloomberg
and New Pioneers Terrorize Steelband Youth
A clear case of
reckless endangerment of youth, family and
community... The terror, that terror
wants...
|
New
York,
USA - ....Close your eyes and envision
over one hundred people with guns, armored
vehicles, assault-teams - waiting for the word
to move in. Afghanistan, Iran, Gaza? Nope!
Like a scene out of ‘Die Hard’ or ‘The Siege,’
there were lights flashing, horns blaring,
dozens of squad cars, paddy wagons and over one
hundred police officers equipped with guns and
other ‘arms’ ready to use them. They cordoned
off the entire block from one end to the other -
and waited for the order to move in. Only this
is not a movie and it sure is not Hollywood.
This is real-life and it’s Brooklyn, New York on
Friday, September 3, 2010, just after 10:00 p.m.

The Tale of the
Disappearing Pan yard - A Steelband Tale
Terror, terror,
terror!
A Very Real Possibility - Sometime in the
very near future...
|
New
York,
USA - A very likely scenario, based on
recent events at the pan yards in New York, and
an ever-present possibility of a steelband pan
yard 'shut down' gone horribly wrong. A
Steelband Tale explores that perspective, and
hopes it NEVER happens...
“There was blood, carnage and gore everywhere.
The sound of the screeching tires and sirens
coming from the ambulances were only momentarily
silenced by the blood-curdling screams and howls
of horrified parents bent over injured children,
and others crying over the bodies of their
parents, siblings and loved ones.”

approached me, (about twelve years young) and
said “Hey Mister, how can I learn to play that
musical instrument (Pan)?” I told her to
get her parents and return to the stage during
my break, and I would explain things.
She arrived soon after our break and I had the
opportunity to meet some of the kindest people
in all of Florida. Her name for this article was
Lilly, a nice, quiet, cordial young lady with a
passion for music. Lilly was a music student,
learning Keyboards at one of our schools. I
explained to her parents that I would be willing
to teach their little girl the Steel Drum
fundamental principle, so we exchanged numbers
and I went about finishing my show.

Sonatas Steel Orchestra
Repeats as Panorama Champions for 2010 - And
Owns New York
Epic musical
fight in the ‘Battle Zone’ for Steelpan
music supremacy
|
New
York,
USA - The New York Panorama 2010 featured
some great performances as all musical
challengers lined up in their efforts to wrestle
the championship from the defending
title-holders, Sonatas Steel Orchestra. WST
reviews how another classic moment in the annals
of New York steelband panorama history came
together.
Field Marshall Yohan Popwell - otherwise known
as the panorama arranger for champion Sonatas
Steel Orchestra - pointed to the far left and
right, and instantaneously the quads camouflaged
as small armored mobile vehicles rattled off a
series of musical volleys over the heads of the
audience that were so sharp it seem to cut a
part in the hair of one patron, giving him a
reverse Mohawk hairstyle. We will not mention
what it did to the women in the audience.

Pan coming back? –
Musical Musings by A. A. Fenty

Guyana,

steelpan music is making a comeback in Guyana?
Replete with an increasing number of
rehabilitated, replenished and brand new
steelband and steel orchestras? That’s what I
was hearing since the Mashramani 2010 season.
So I set out to investigate this potential good
news—or views – which could augur well for our
cultural/musical tradition. But before I report
on what I discovered, I must hark back, ever so
briefly, to the status of Guyana’s steel-band
music of by-gone years.

New York, USA -
The top three positions in the New York
steelband music panorama competition were
snapped up by the same three steel orchestras
this year, as in 2009. With Sonatas taking
the title, ADLIB Steel Orchestra coming in
second, and CASYM Steel Orchestra locking up the
third spot - the results to this point are a
‘carbon copy’ of 2009’s.
And in another
interesting ‘repeat,’ both Pantonic and D’Radoes
tied for 7th position in this year’s
competition, just as they both did in 2009!

The Saga Begins - The
Road to the NY Panorama Championship
A WST special to the NY Daily News
|
New
York,
USA - The grand event known as “Panorama”
commences on its traditional date - the last
Saturday before Labor Day. Part show, part
theater and part musical competition -
“panorama” is, and remains, a critical part of
the cultural fabric of the Caribbean carnival
experience of New York. There is nothing just
like panorama - the enormity, the spectacle, the
raw emotions and the sheer investment of human
will and drive.
Back in the late 80’s, this writer invited a
college colleague, Jessie N. from Columbia
University to experience a New York panorama.
“How is it possible that I’ve never heard about
this - how could something of this magnitude be
happening in this city without anyone knowing?”
he would say after experiencing his first
Panorama...

A Steel Symphony,
Pounded Out in Brooklyn
|
New
York,
USA - As the sun sets over a string of
tire repair and auto body shops in Brooklyn, the
first jaunty notes of a jangly symphony ring
out. The roar of Atlantic Avenue subsides as the
music floods these ragged blocks, filling the
grease-soaked garages with a breath of island
air.
Follow the music and you will find a dreadlocked
man called Bumpy in the center of a crowded lot,
leading a steel drum orchestra that plays well
into the early morning. At 8 p.m., a few dozen
musicians bang away. By midnight, their ranks
grow to 100, and their ages range from 7 to 68.
