“The Bradley
Years”
The
Bradley Years represent the definitive collection
of steelband music arrangements and performances
for a large steel orchestra. This collection
showcases seven classic arrangements from the
master arranger Clive Bradley. Bradley
is considered to be the best steelband music
arranger ever by many, including his peers.
In addition, the arrangements are performed
by one of the finest steelbands in the world,
New York’s Pantonic Steel Orchestra. Clive Bradley
had a very special relationship with Pantonic.
This orchestra clinched the title of panorama
champions five times in seven years - performing
Bradley’s musical works. The performances
were captured by Basement Recordings days before,
and in one instance, mere moments before they
took the stage for the prestigious annual steelband
music panorama competition.
The recordings
capture, reproduce and present an unrivalled
clarity with sonic realism, of a large steel
orchestra fielding between one hundred and one
hundred twenty musicians - unlike any other
steelband music recordings in its class.
This body
of musical work is a sterling addition for all
fans, educators, players, historians and fine
music collectors.

Smooth Sailing at 2015 Panorama Musical Game of Thrones - The Good, Bad and Ugly - A WST Review
|
|

|
|
Trinidad & Tobago,
W.I.
-
Once again the greatest steel orchestras in the world convened in fierce contest for their annual rumble on the 'Big Stage' in the Queen's Park Savannah in Port-of-Spain, the capital of 'The Home Of Pan.'
Hailing from sister isle Tobago, and the North, South, East, and West of Trinidad - the twin-island birthplace of the steelpan instrument - they came for a shot at musical supremacy for some - or an opportunity at fame and renown for others. And of course, the usually slim chance to enter the circle where only Titans and Giants roam - Panorama Champion, Large Steel Orchestra Category.

Contemplating genius one panyard at a time
|
|
Trinidad & Tobago,
W.I.
-
How can one contemplate genius? How does one recognise that savant quality in gifted musicians? Here in the “Third World” of foreigners' fantasies, the reputations of communities have been placed on the shoulders of political giants, on the shoulders of criminals, on the shoulders of cricket captains and steelpan arrangers. For this Carnival 2015, I ventured to gather that magic of the urban panyard as a locus for creativity, for communality, for a congregation of the curious at the periphery looking in.

Pan Trinbago loses appeal
|
|
Trinidad & Tobago, W.I.
- World governing body for the steelpan, Pan Trinbago, has lost its appeal against a decision of a High Court judge who, in 2013, ruled that two steelband members were eligible candidates for the organisation’s central executive committee elections.
In a decision handed down by Justices of Appeal Peter Jamadar, Nolan Bereaux and Mark Mohammed, the Appellate Court held that PanTrinbago failed to prove that the decisions of High Court judge, Justice Ricky Rahim were plainly wrong.

The science of steelband arranging is being able to take a song, arrange it in such a way that musicians could like it, play it and make you feel good. The emotion must vibrate in the music. Music is a language. You have to speak to people in a language that they speak.

The Spilling of Blood - Phase II vs. Trinidad All Stars - A Saga for The Ages
by Dalton Narine
|

|
|
Trinidad and Tobago,
W.I.
-
True, there is a bitter irony of circumstance that the arrangers of the two best steelbands in Panorama have been longtime friends. Yet it is the blood of Phase II Pan Groove that made Trinidad All Stars blood boil, erupting an out-of-character behavior In the large band finals at the Queen’s Park Savannah. Shucks, the Stars’ old Hell Yard instincts kicked in with vengeance the way the tussle came off back in 1986 when the Phase all but had their first victory locked in with Pan Rising as the drama in the Rama pushed to a head.

Steelband making waves
|
|
Guyana, SA
- Guyana is awash, virtually
daily, with an array of ‘bad news’ stories. The
‘good news’ items are around, but they don’t
always make the headlines; they remain
invisible. This one I’m about to tell you goes
back some years to around 2007 when steelband
music had declined in Guyana. One or two bands
were still around, but the art form generally
was in the doldrums. However, with Carifesta
looming here, the Minister of Culture, Frank
Anthony, wanted to look at reviving steelband.
He
suggested the formation of a national steelband
to debut at
Carifesta, and appointed Andrew Tyndall,
himself a panman, as Coordinator for the move.
“We put out a call for former players to help
reignite the thing,” said Tyndall, “and that
also brought responses from a number of
youngsters playing pan in school.” In the
beginning, some of the senior players were
dubious about a band with these young school
children, but instructors (Andrew Tyndall, Cecil
Bovell, Cary Gillis and Charles Gillis) were
attached to the schools to start teaching.

Trinidad All Stars Again
Deny Phase II Pan Groove Hat-trick -
Pan Elders Retain Medium Champion Title for
Second Year
|
|
Global
-
And shortly
after 4:00 a.m. local time on Carnival Sunday,
pan music lovers all over the world knew just
where their favorite bands in medium and/or
large conventional steel orchestra categories
stood - like it or not. With a start sometime
after 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, the final stage for
both the medium and large conventional steel
orchestras had come alive as first eleven
medium, then ten large bands gave the titles
their best musical shots.
For Trinidad All Stars and
arranger Leon “Smooth” Edwards, it was sweet
triumph as the band that calls Duke Street,
Port-of-Spain home fulfilled their 2015 mandate,
that is, to put the brakes on the 2014 champs
Phase II Pan Groove as the latter tried in vain
for a third consecutive Panorama title. And it
is not the first time...

Ocean Bay Middle School
offers steel drum and taiko class

|
|
Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, USA
- Students at Ocean Bay
Middle School can now take a class on steel drum
and taiko. The class was previously only offered
at Carolina Forest Elementary, but Dr. Tim
Peterman wanted to give students the chance to
keep playing as they grow older.
While the
instruments are unique, Dr. Peterman said
they're well received by students.
"You get
to hit something, that's the main thing," said
Dr. Peterman.
Eighth
grader Tony Mastroberti started playing at the
elementary school and picked it back up this
year.
"You could
play tropical music, classical music, jazz
music, anything," said Mastroberti.
According
to Dr. Peterman, the class currently has 73
students enrolled.

Magic of a steel pan band

|
|
Mukilteo, Washington, USA
- An Edmonds man fell in love
with the melodic music of steel pan bands at the
age of 10, and now he’s set his sights on
bringing a world-class steel band to Edmonds.
As a boy,
Gary Gibson stood in the crowds at a
Thanksgiving Day parade and watched as a corps
of Navy men passed in dress blues drumming on
steel pans strapped to their chests.
Gibson –
inspired by the US Navy Steel Band – rushed
home, grabbed an old bowl-shaped metal sled and
created his own “pan.”
At 54, he
continues to play, and his passion for steel pan
music has led him not only to teaching, but also
to the founding of a non-profit called Steel
Magic Northwest.
Gibson
said the goal of Steel Magic Northwest is to
teach music, teamwork, discipline and
leadership, and to build community in the
context of a modern steel orchestra.
“It’s not
an intimidating musical instrument,” he said,
“not a lot of buttons and keys and little
strings and little things.

Mashramani 2015 Steelband competitors are well
‘tuned’ with the vibes for the much awaited
Steelband competition. This year’s competition
comprises two categories; the school bands will
add to the customary category; the large and
regular ones.
At
present, 11 school bands and five large bands
have registered to participate in the
competition, which will be held on February 8,
at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
These
school bands include Panwave Steelpan Academy,
Bishops’ High, Christiansburg Wismar Secondary,
North Ruimveldt Secondary, Lodge Secondary,
Dolphin Secondary, Buxton Youth Band, Bartica
Youth Band, Queen’s College, West Demerara
Secondary and St. Rose’s High.
Meanwhile, in the large band category, five
bands have registered, including the Guyana
Police Force Band, Park Side Steel Orchestra,
Guyana Defence Force Band, Buxton Pride and the
Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport Band.
