Forward
10 great songs that show how a guy named Bob Feldman wrote
the soundtrack of a generation
The Beach-Nuts — Out In The Sun (Hey-O)

The Brill Building is where Bob Feldman and his songwriting
brethren practiced their trade.
New York, USA - When
songwriter and record producer Bob Feldman passed away Aug. 23
at the age of 83, we lost another giant of 1960s Brill Building
pop.
Born in Brooklyn to Orthodox Jewish parents, Feldman initially
considered becoming a cantor before he channeled his vocal
talents into singing doo-wop on the street corners of Brighton
Beach. He began writing songs of his own with the help of
neighborhood pal Jerry Goldstein....
....A deeply underrated summer pop gem, 1965’s “Out in the Sun (Hey-O)”
took the island vibe of Harry Belafonte’s “Banana Boat Song” and dropped it
firmly into the Coney Island sand. Essentially a one-off collaboration
between the Angels and the Strangeloves, the song was also one of the first
pop-rock tracks to feature backing from a steel band, and definitely
deserved better than its lowly “bubbling under” placement on the Billboard
charts.

Key West Citizen
Marathon band director expanding steel drum corps | Middle
Keys

A Marathon student practices on the steel drums.
Florida, USA - The Florida
Keys have rich, feel-good, island-inspired musical roots, from
Coffee Butler and Howard Livingston to Key West’s adopted son,
Jimmy Buffett, who died Sept. 1 at the age of 76.
Marathon Middle/High School Director of Bands Chuck Brooker may
well be a literal “one-man band” through his vision to keep that
musical legacy alive and growing. And by doing so, while
remaining true to the island origins that have shaped the sounds
of the Keys, he’s building a strong student emphasis on steel
drums.
....Brooker is organizing the new Marathon Community Steel Drum
Band adult program, set to begin Tuesday, Sept. 19, in
preparation for the fall 2023 season. The band in this community
program is open to anyone older than age 18 and can accommodate
12 to 15 students. This program intentionally excludes high
schoolers who are already enrolled in his school classes.

‘Exciting times but long road ahead for pan’

Beverley Ramsey-Moore
Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. -
There are exciting times ahead for pan but the road won’t
be easy.
This is according to
Pan Trinbago
president
Beverley Ramsey-Moore,
who said she was pleased the authorities are showing interest
and commitment towards the future of pan.
Ramsey-Moore was responding to President Christine Kangaloo’s
statement at Monday’s opening of the Fourth Session of the 12th
Parliament, when she called for an urgent parliamentary
intervention for pan being firmly and irrevocably declared the
country’s national instrument.

Facebook got it wrong - Meta World and WST & SteelPan Are

Facebook “Likes” sends PanOnTheNet Apology - “We got it
wrong”
Metaverse - Facebook got it
wrong. About three years ago without warning or reason all WST
(When Steel Talks) steelpan-related accounts fell out of favor
with the social media giant Facebook now known as Meta and its
aligned consortiums (Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp). Because
WST has all of our material hosted on our own shared servers,
this ‘tag’ was not incurable or as problematic as it could have
been. However, it was annoying to have people seeking critical
steelpan music info diverted by Facebook AI (artificial
intelligence).
