New York, USA - Thousands of Caribbean nationals were among steelpan aficionados on hand on Friday for the historic “Pan in Times Square” ceremony commemorating the historic, inaugural World Steelpan Day.
Earlier this month, the United Nations had declared Aug. 11 as World Steelpan Day.
....The Trinidad and Tobago Consulate General in New York, with the support of the Brooklyn-based mas band, Sesame Flyers International, Inc., organized the spectacular event.
....The near two-hour-long ceremony featured one of Trinidad and Tobago’s
leading panists,
Dane Gulston, who led a combined band of panists in jamming
soca vibes to the effervescent crowd.

New Hampshire, USA - There are some musicians out there who aren’t afraid to go their own way while straying from previously established norms. They prefer to forge their own artistic path and a good amount of the time their creative output is both inventive and innovative.
This can be said about
Jonathan Scales, who has been expanding the limit of the steel pan
instrument in a variety of ways for over 15 years. He exhibits his craft
with his band known as the Fourchestra, and they’re going to be taking the
stage at The Stone Church in Newmarket on August 12.

Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. - By way of a proposal, Pan Trinbago president Beverley Ramsey-Moore hopes to have an even bigger celebration for next year’s World Steelpan Day and, if she gets her wish, have some of the countries that supported the resolution visit TT.
....“Imagine global acceptance, countries that have never even heard of
that signed on and supported the resolution. It is our business now to reach
out to those countries and to invite them and their citizens to come into
our space and enjoy steelpan among our loving people.”

the level of discussions held and the input by some individuals
who are known principals of the Antigua and Barbuda Pan
Association (ABPA), I deem it a covert and overt attempt by
these individuals to use the Caribbean Union Bank Hells Gate
Steel Orchestra (CUB-HGSO) as a ‘scapegoat’ for the ABPA
leadership’s continued failure to appropriately manage the
association’s affairs.

Republic Bank congratulates 15-time Junior Panorama champions Republic Bank Angel Harps

harpers remain undefeated after
successfully defending their title at the Children’s
Carnival Frolic held last Saturday, amassing a score of 267.5
points. The junior harpers lit up the carnival stage at the
National Stadium with their spectacular rendition of Ajamu’s

And the wins keep rolling in. For Hells Gate Steel Orchestra and
its resident champion arranger Khan “KC” Cordice, triumph was
the result once more in the national Panorama. Hard work,
dedication, musical skills and more all were in play on August 5
for this winning team; it has been the case for the last four
consecutive competitions. To date, Hells Gate and Cordice have
chalked up twenty-two and nine titles, respectively.

junior champs Angel Harps Juniors kept their title and bragging
rights for another year as they triumphed in the 2023 Junior
Panorama. Playing in position two, the youngsters bested four
other steel orchestras, keeping the flag of their musical

A media release said, Ellies is an accomplished panist, a with a
certificate in music from UWI’s Centre for Creative & Festival Arts, who has
worked alongside the cream of local talent. He has shared the stage with

Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. - THE EDITOR: I am at a loss as to why successive governments have not yet officially proclaimed pan as TT’s national musical instrument, thereby elevating its national and international status to that of all our national symbols and emblems – the flag, the coat of arms, the birds, the flowers, etc.
..... The late prime minister Patrick Manning, who declared pan the
national instrument in his 1992 Independence Day address to the nation, did
not live to see it officially proclaimed via parliamentary procedure as
being our national musical instrument.

Facebook “Likes” sends PanOnTheNet Apology - “We got it wrong”
Metaverse - Facebook got it
wrong. About three years ago without warning or reason all WST
(When Steel Talks) steelpan-related accounts fell out of favor
with the social media giant Facebook now known as Meta and its
aligned consortiums (Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp). Because
WST has all of our material hosted on our own shared servers,
this ‘tag’ was not incurable or as problematic as it could have
been. However, it was annoying to have people seeking critical
steelpan music info diverted by Facebook AI (artificial
intelligence).

Global - On Tuesday July 26, 2022 the steelpan instrument of Trinidad and Tobago is featured and celebrated on the site of technology giant “Google” via the famed Google ‘Doodle.’ The ‘Doodle’ is essentially an illustrative change made to the Google corporate logo “to celebrate holidays, anniversaries, and the lives of famous artists, pioneers, and scientists” - and more. The doodle is then seen by users all around the world who access Google’s homepage on that day, and is available thereafter in the doodle archives.
....Trinidad and Tobago-based artist Nicholas Huggins is the creator of the
illustrative artwork featured in the doodle, while Etienne Charles is the composer
of the accompanying music performed by the legendary steelpan icon Len “Boogsie”
Sharpe.
