New York, USA - It was a night of sweet victory for D’Radoes Steel Orchestra (aka Radoes) at the 2019 New York Panorama. A battle for the best in show among eight steel orchestras, one, Philadelphia (Philly) Pan Stars hailing from Philadelphia, joined its seven New York musical peers on the competition stage for the annual steelband showcase. A night of beautiful weather on this Labor Day weekend in New York complemented and played host to steel orchestras which delivered their Panorama tunes to steelband enthusiasts gathered at the venue in the back of the Brooklyn Museum on Saturday, August 31.
Long-time champion arranger Terrance “BJ” Marcelle has worked with D’Radoes for nine Panorama seasons, and put them on the path of the latest of four Panorama championships during this time. With his arrangement of Hookin’ Meh—also the champion tune in the Trinidad & Tobago Panorama earlier on this year—the band dethroned title-defenders Despers USA.
ADLIB and Pan Evolution steel orchestras rounded out the top three positions. While only a single point separated the top two bands, which scored 459 and 458, respectively, there was a 14-point difference between second and third place - these results overall as far as the panel of five judges—Judith DeFour-Howard, Wade Robinson, Jeffrey Smith, Kenneth Joseph and Franklyn Grant—was concerned.
For pan lovers not present at the actual event, there were initially multiple efforts to get an online stream going, facilitated by Panorama promoter/organizers W.I.A.D.C.A. (West Indian American Day Carnival Association), but technical issues apparently made real-time viewing impossible.
