Moods of Pan 2007 Honors Distinguished Antiguan Steelpan Musician

Antigua - The first night of the ninth annual 2007 Moods of Pan Festival opened up with a dedication to one of Antigua's favorite sons, panman Mr. Vere Henry.

The esteemed Mr. Vere Henry

As the accolades poured in from those who had worked with or had been inspired by this celebrated gentleman, one quickly realizes that Vere Henry is much, much more than a steelpan musician. He is a man who has touched many, many people's lives in a positive manner. Mr. Henry was described as 'a man who encouraged those who needed encouragement, and reined in those who needed scolding.' Moreover, he provided guidance by example.

In addition to Mr. Henry's continuous involvement in pan for thirty-five years, he is one of the founding members of Gemonites Steel Orchestra. Gemonites is one of Antigua & Barbuda's most respected and top-ranking steel orchestras.

The word that best describes Vere is 'giving' - giving of his talent, giving of his time and giving of his friendship. This sentiment is quickly re-enforced as you observe all the people who are genuinely delighted to know Mr. Henry, as they speak effusively about him.

Respected, revered, honored and loved - Vere Henry has received the ultimate for a panman - that being recognition by your peers in your lifetime. Very few people in the pan fraternity have experienced this moment. All too often, people of the pan community receive praise only after they have passed, if they are even that fortunate.

Gemonites, as the producers of Moods of Pan are to be commended for their efforts in ensuring that Vere Henry received publicly the accolades which he so rightfully deserves, and at the right time - in the here and now.
