The
Bradley Years represent the definitive
collection of steelband music arrangements
and performances for a large steel
orchestra. This collection showcases seven
classic arrangements from the master
arranger Clive Bradley. Bradley is
considered to be the best steelband music
arranger ever by many, including his peers.
In addition, the arrangements are performed
by one of the finest steelbands in the
world, New York’s Pantonic Steel Orchestra.
Clive Bradley had a very special
relationship with Pantonic. This orchestra
clinched the title of panorama champions
five times in seven years - performing
Bradley’s musical works. The performances
were captured by Basement Recordings days
before, and in one instance, mere moments
before they took the stage for the
prestigious annual steelband music panorama
competition.
The
recordings capture, reproduce and present an
unrivalled clarity with sonic realism, of a
large steel orchestra fielding between one
hundred and one hundred twenty musicians -
unlike any other steelband music recordings
in its class.
This body of musical work is a sterling
addition for all fans, educators, players,
historians and fine music collectors.
The most recent CD from Ralph MacDonald is “Mixty
Motions.” It’s the masterful Ralph MacDonald
surrounded by fantastic musicians as well as
two new performances by the great duo, Ashford
and Simpson. As with previous Ralph MacDonald
releases, steelpan instruments played by Robert
Greenidge maintain a prominent role in defining
the attitude of the CD.

Port-of-Spain,
Trinidad - Having
been penalised
for
excessive
players and
subsequently
failing to
secure a top

this year’s

Sagicor
Exodus Steel

Orchestra
has begun
regrouping
in
preparation
for next

Carnival
season.
Despite
rumours of
legal action
against
Carnival
officials,
Exodus First
Captain,
Anthony Rose
said the
band has
accepted the
decision
made by
officials.
In speaking
with
SKNVibes.com
he said, “It
was a
competition
and you
always have
to go with
the judge’s
decision
which is
final. With
regard to
the
regulations
concerning
the number
of players
in the large
band
category
this year
they brought
the figure
down from
120 to 100
players.
“That
decision was
kind of
controversial
and that
affected our
performance
even though
we still
performed
well.
However,
some players
didn’t get
to play and
they just
had to stand

When Steel Talks
An Analysis
and Review
of Trinidad and Tobago’s
2009 National Steelband Panorama
Trinidad,
W.I. -
The format
of a
panorama
tune has
evolved
because of
the early
innovations
of arrangers
who actually
gave the
judges ideas
for the
categories
of judging.
Today some
arrangers
get so
caught up in
following
the rules
that their
creativity
is sometimes
stifled. If
one sticks
to the idea
of knowing
that the
judging is
based on
four main
categories
(arrangement,
performance,
quality of
sound, and
rhythm),
then one can
allow the
creative
juices to
flow
naturally.
To
understand
how the
format of a
Panorama
arrangement
evolved one
must briefly
study the
early
masters of
arranging.
To begin
with the
musical
selections
of the first
panorama
tunes were
not that
harmonically
or
melodically
difficult.
This gave
room for the
arranger to
think about
how to
lengthen the
tune into a
steelpan
arrangement. click for

Mashramani
Pan-O-Rama thrills hundreds
Georgetown,

“Mashramani
Pan-O-Rama”
was the
theme of the
Republic
Bank
Mashramani
Steel Pan
competition,
held at the
Cliff
Anderson
Sports Hall
last
Saturday
night, which
thrilled
hundreds.
The evening
began with
the warm
remarks of
the Minister
of Culture
Youth and
Sports, Dr.
Frank
Anthony.
He said that
he was happy
to see that
the ‘art of
steel pan’
music is
finally
coming back,
since for
some time
now it has
been a dying
art form in
Guyana.
The Minister
also noted
that the
Ministry has
invested
heavily in
promoting
and building
the art of
steel pan
music.
“This
particular
competition
had at least
twenty plus
bands prior
that were
interested
in this
competition.”
However,
only 15
bands
competed on
Saturday
night.
The Minister
said that
the Republic
Bank has
been a
“great
partner”
with the
Ministry for
this
competition
and
expressed
hope that
the
partnership
between the
two entities
continues to
be the

history as
they did so,
the band

And at the

first. Not
bad for a
‘first’ in

first time,
that is, in
which a band
has moved up
from the
medium
category to
that of the
large -
(where

A son’s tribute
to his father
Trinidad and Tobago - Amrit Samaroo, son of composer/steel band arranger
extraordinaire, Dr. Jit Samaroo said that he is treating his
2009 panorama arrangement for the Bp Renegades Steel
Orchestra, a song entitled Dr. Jit that was composed and
sung by Winston (The Original DeFosto) Scarborough, as a
celebration of his father’s contribution to the Renegades,
the national panorama competition and to the music of
Trinidad and Tobago in general. According to young Samaroo,
the arrangement features quotations from his father’s work
over the years that anyone familiar with Jit's music and
with the classic Renegades sound should be able to identify.

that it is

The Dutch Police Steelband is no longer a member of the
National Corps Police Orchestra. It is now a Musical
Unit within the Dutch Police Department.
The National Police Orchestra was founded in 1949 and exists as a Harmony Orchestra and a Marching band. In early 1979, the drummers of the Marching Band wanted to expand their music knowledge and were searching for another music form which had to be united with the Marching Band owing to its knowledge and rhythm. Steelband music was soon discovered. At that time all their members were Policemen. Nowadays, the Police Steelband is no longer a member of the National Corps Police Orchestra. It is now a Musical Unit within the Dutch Police Department.

Trinidad -
Merlin Gill, better known as “Mutt”, has spent a lifetime dedicated to the promotion of the steel
pan. First as a player, an arranger and now as a manufacturer, Mutt has ensured that many
know about this instrument’s versatility. Through his travels and his company, Gill’s Pan Shop,
Gill has been spreading the gospel of pan across the globe.
Mutt’s love affair with pan began at the tender age of
seven, beating pan under his house in Curepe. Mentored
by Pedro Burgess, he started on the Grundig, a guitar pan
with one big note in the middle surrounded by five smaller
notes. Thus began Mutt’s fascination with background pans
as evidenced in his arrangements. Over the next three years,
Gill and his friends formed the Golden Dukes then Merlin
and Robert Greenidge created the Enchanted Angels with
pans contributed by Desperadoes. One could just imagine the
community’s view of this enthusiastic bunch of pre teen boys.
Words like wayward, vagabond and good for nothing floated
around.
Canada -
Having won the 2007 Pan Alive competition, part of the annual Caribana activities in Toronto,
Canada on Saturday 4th August 2007 with 271 points; this Montreal based steelband retained the
coveted Pan Alive Champions title in 2008 with Salah Wilson’s musical rendition of Puncernelly.
Trinidadian born Salah Wilson is a man with a mission and that mission is the steelpan. This
20th century melodic percussion instrument is easily recognisable for its bright, sharp, resonant
sounds. Salah Wilson has dedicated his life to promoting the steelpan, teaching the artform to
the young and old as well as documenting its history.

“I don’t

Pantonic releases
“The Bradley Years”
The Bradley Years represent the definitive collection of steelband music
arrangements and performances for a large steel orchestra. This collection
showcases seven classic arrangements from the master arranger Clive Bradley.
Bradley is considered to be the best steelband music arranger ever by many,
including
his peers.
In addition,
the
arrangements are performed by one of the finest steelbands in the world, New
York’s Pantonic Steel Orchestra. Clive Bradley had a very special relationship
with Pantonic. This orchestra captured the title of
panorama champions five times in seven years - performing Bradley’s
musical
works. The performances were captured
by Basement
Recordings days
before, and in one instance, mere moments before they took the stage for the prestigious annual steelband music panorama
competition. The recordings capture, reproduce and present a clarity and
the sonic
realism of a large steel orchestra fielding between one hundred and
hundred
twenty
musicians -
unlike any other steelband music recordings
in its class.
This body of
musical work is
a must-have for

“I made the steel band a real study. I

portion of his early career in England, that bond with the pan

When Steel Talks
Panorama Time is Bradley Time
The Great One Examined
Global
- He was simply the world’s greatest steelpan music
arranger. Moreover, he was the one the
titans of pan bowed to. This was his stage, his arena, his moment. This was his time. Panorama was "Bradley Time." Master arranger Clive Bradley, more so than any other, shaped and elevated the music and theatre of the panorama as we know it.
We revisit a
musical
examination
of some of
the Master’s
works by one
of the most
respected
and gifted
music
talents out
of the
Caribbean.
Frankie
McIntosh
provides us
with an
intellectual,
as well as a
critical and
culturally
perceptive
interpretation
of these
selected
panorama
music works
from the
arranger.
In a special
music
extraordinaire,

musical look
at one of
the
recordings.

Trinidad and Tobago Review
Sidelining of Pan Trinbago
Trinidad &
Tobago,
W.I.
-
With an Act
of
Parliament
on January
28, 1986,
Pan Trinbago
was affirmed
as the
monolithic
body to
govern
everything
pertaining
to what is
now the
National
Instrument.
It was not
until 1992
that the
present
Prime
Minister
gave his
blessing to
pan and
announced to
the world at
the finals
of Pan Is
Beautiful,
that the pan
is the
National
Instrument
of Trinidad
& Tobago.
I remember
that
occasion
well because
I served Pan
Trinbago as
the Chief
Adjudicator
for that
competition,
and when I
heard that
announcement,
there was a
feeling of
euphoria all
over the
Jean Pierre
Complex.
When I
spoke to the
audience on
behalf of
all the
adjudicators,
I mentioned
the need to
have the
National
Instrument
in every
school in
Trinidad &
Tobago.
