Meet Martin Douglas - Manager, Executive, Panist, Educator - CrossFire Steel Orchestra - UpClose!

Martin Douglas at When Steel Talks/Basement Recordings Studio

Global - The history of Pan is replete with large, colorful figures whose names and deeds will be entwined with steelband music art form forever.  Martin “Dougie” Douglas was one such character.

Whether you were a child or an adult, you only had to meet him once to understand why the name “Dougie” was known to all, and that he immediately made you feel like you had known him for a lifetime.  It takes a very special person to run a steelband organization in New York. And indeed Dougie was special.  He was always able, willing to help, always positive regardless of the situation, and always viewed the glass as half-full.  Dougie was one who was close to the late Rudolph Charles, and himself was pivotal in a way—unbeknownst to many—that shaped the New York pan community into what it is today.

In an exclusive 2004 interview with When Steel Talks - Martin Douglas demonstrated his gift for storytelling and a stellar memory attention to details of historical events.

Hansel “Hanny” Leon Remembered

by Garvin Blake

Ironman/percussionist Hansel “Hanny” Leon with Pan Evolution Steel Orchestra in 2019

New York, USA - When Hansel “Hanny” Leon passed on March 25, 2020, Brooklyn lost a beat. He was the most tireless ironman I have ever heard. Hanny played his iron, a piece of metal that’s central to Trinidad’s music, anywhere, everywhere.

His gift for playing complex rhythms, with precise timing, made him the life of a Flagwoman bus ride, a Hawks boat ride or any party. Hanny also had the discipline to perform with large steelbands like Cavaliers, Sonatas, Fonclaire and Pan Evolution, providing support and adding color to their music.

The Baddest Desperado, so Rudolph Charles remains...

by Dalton Narine

The funeral of Desperadoes' Rudolph Charles - photo courtesy of David Rudder

Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. - Thirty-five years ago, Laventille’s Rudolph Charles shuffled off this mortal coil and went out in style - a glam funeral service, his soul encased in the Chariot pans he invented and three religions vying for meager props at his rites on the banks of the Caroni - as an age of innocence was nearing its own death.
Fascinating that, as an uncommon man, he bore the weight of the absolute trilogy of personalities, the father son and holy ghost, and that he lived and died on a hill:

Rudolph Charles
The Hammer...
To this day, with his refinement as a leader in the bag, his skills as a pan tuner conclusive and his community service making a palpable difference, Rudolph’s eternal truth overmatches the music he made in both the classical and Panorama festivals. Driving Desperadoes’ heavenly sound and pushing his legacy to the extent of Hollywood’s old-time icons, in whose glamour he bathed in the rotten pits of local theaters.

RAISING LAVENTILLE: THE DOC and THE HAMMER GO TO WORK

by Dalton Narine

Prime Minister Dr. Eric Williams takes in a practice session at the Desperadoes panyard with leader Rudolph Charles at his side

Global - A PM and a steelband legend build an alliance to benefit pan and a community:  Rudolph Charles – The Hammer himself, the headstrong leader of Desperadoes on Laventille hill.  He migrated there to be with family, but the development of pan had always been his fire. The Carnival over, he’d be in chilly LA engaging himself in various aspects of the art – tuning, inventing, metallurgy (the technique of working with metals) and forming relationships with drum factories.

A Critical Review of ESPN’s Podcast - Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)

by A. Hinkson

Global - When Steel Talks asked our trusted medical advisor Augustin Hinkson to give his opinion of the podcast we posted earlier this week.

Read Hinkson’s critical review of ESPN’s Podcast with Dr. Bettina Fries on the COVID-19 aka Corona Virus.

....“Her critical statement is that “over 80% of the Patients [with Corona Virus] are going to have a harmless presentation.” This alone should be a break on the panic/hysteria currently on display. Reminds me of Orson Wells’ “War of the Worlds.” Something that can be missed by the casual listener are her statements regarding the reliability of the tests.

“The CDC has had some hiccups rolling out the test, which are, by the way, not FDA approved, according to the CDC’s website. The tests were approved under an emergency authorization and therefore did not go through traditional milestones for approval.”

Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. -  “Hazel was always very “avant garde,” and not only an academic but a talented musician, as well, who had always been fascinated by the pan....Some of us were schoolgirls and people would ask Hazel’s mother ‘How she could allow that in her house.’ “But,” said Pat, “she straightened them out replying ‘it’s my house and these children come from good families”.”

She was an intellectual, a Pan Pioneer, and multi-talented, thoughtful, forward-thinking and a steelband leader in an era when women were looked down upon for any association with pan. When Steel Talks spotlights panist, musician, arranger and performing artist the late Hazel Henley, founder of one of reportedly only two all-women steel orchestras in the 1950s in Trinidad and Tobago, “Girl Pat Steel Orchestra.”

The Last Panman

by Willi Chen

Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. - ....Lyons looked sternly at his wife and picked up his sticks. Once more he stroked his pan into pulsing resonance. For a moment his music took him to a high level of coherence; a cogency of multi-toned passages he had longed to produce. A fleeting moment of success. He had fought to get this tonal notes right, with constant practice and had resolved to strike his left stick with the right force, at the right moment, in unison, to achieve the fluidity, the compromising vibrations, so elusively complex and dexterously difficult.

With Wendy’s haunting voice still on his mind, he stopped his pan playing and approached the table for a drink of water. He looked up the road where the Star Brite Steelband was rehearsing. He recognised the vibrant energy the players displayed as the base drums dispensed a riotous rumbling of discordance.
