My Time Again! -- Parang sung by Rhonda Rosales -
Steelpan by Curt Rogers
Global - This song was
written through the belief, encouragement and bit of nag…LOL,
from band mate Ron Metivier who always saw the potential in me
to compose lyrically and never accepted the excuse, “I can’t
write because I don’t play any instruments to guide me along!”
The day of this inspiration occurred from one of those phone
calls which started as a casual conversation about songs to
prepare for a rehearsal that turned into an argument about
believing in one’s self.

‘Twas the night before J’Ouvert... A Steelpan Christmas
Story
by Catt
. . . and all through the yard,
no bomb tune was missing, no arrangement too hard.
The racks and the pans were made ready with care,
In hopes that St. Bradley soon would be there.
The panmen were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of road march danced in their heads.
Moms in her paint, and I feelin’ fine
had gone out a road for a jump and a wine.
When out in the street there arose such a clatter,
I ran from the yard to see what was the matter.
Down to the Savannah I flew like a flash,
To see who would win the prizewinning cash.

Trinidad and Tobago Newsday
Tony “Muffman” Williams, father of modern steelband, dies

Tony “Muffman” Williams, right, is congratulated
by Prof Brian Copeland on his honorary doctor of
letters degree from UWI at a graduation ceremony
in October 2016.
Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. - Pan
researcher, writer and former director of the Carnival Institute
of Trinidad and Tobago Dr Kim Johnson describes
Tony “Muffman”
Williams as the most important panman in history.
Why? Because of his work as a captain, tuner and arranger, Johnson said.
Williams died on December 21 at 90 at the St James Medical Complex. He
had been hospitalised with
COVID-19 since December 7.
To Johnson and many others, Williams was the father of the modern steel
orchestra.
Johnson explained that Williams covered the three spheres of being a
panman.
He led what many consider the greatest steelband ever,
North Stars, as it
won the first two Panoramas and set the template for “all subsequent
arrangement of Panorama tunes,” Johnson said.

How an Impossible Steel Drum Gets Built
Kyle Dunleavy required two years, a back-yard bonfire,
and many hot-tub soaks (to soothe his aching deltoids) to hammer out an
instrument with an unprecedented range of notes
New York, USA -
Five years ago,
Josh Quillen, a member of Sō Percussion, a Brooklyn-based music
ensemble, spoke with a maker and tuner of steel drums named
Kyle Dunleavy
about building a potentially unworkable design. Musical steel drums,
also called pans, are fashioned from industrial barrels of the type
used for storing crude oil or hazardous waste. Pans come in a
variety of different voices—bass, tenor bass, cello, guitar, double
second, double tenor, and tenor. “I wanted a pair of double seconds
that would have at least three octaves of notes on them,” Quillen
said recently. “The drums would be fully chromatic, with all the
sharps and flats, and would go down to the C below middle C.” No
drums like them, with such a plenitude of notes, were then in
existence.
