Ode to a Steelband Visionary Anthony Abdul Reid
by Andre Moses
Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. -
....The young panists of this generation from Scherzando,
birdsong and Pamberi would not know Abdul and he too would
struggle to adapt to their dynamic that was birthed and
developed in a radically different era. As they ‘do their do’
and make ‘new history’ in well appointed panyard spaces, with
the benefit of strong traditions and resilient legacies, we
should tell them that we should give thanks to a thinker, a
fighter, a vibesman and a visionary called Anthony Reid, aka
Abdul, aka Bellzie who played a pivotal role in setting up the
structures that we all claim and benefit from so immensely
today.

A short guide to the treasure trove of steelpan history

Steelpan music is an integral part of Antigua
and Barbuda’s culture
Antigua & Barbuda, W.I. -
The
history of the steelpan, and its influence in Antigua, is a
treasure trove worth exploring. However, in order to explore the
treasure trove, you would certainly need directions to it.
Hopefully, this article will point you on the right path.
In the early days of the steelpan, the instrument was disapproved of by
many of the upper and middle class. The acceptance of the instrument here in
Antigua is credited to Governor Baldwin, who was said to disapprove of
complaints made against the music.

In a bid to increase the efficiency in the running of

....According to Robin Margetson, Public Relations Officer for the

panists on stage per band on competition night. However, this year, the
