Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. - Champs of Steel Plus will not be staged this year.
The cancellation of the popular Pan Trinbago-produced aprés-carnival event is due to the lack of financial resources.
Pan Trinbago President Keith Diaz, explained that in the past years, funding was in the main sourced from gate receipts from the Panorama events and sponsors.
“This year, the National Carnival Commission (NCC)” he said “has all the money from Panorama.”
Diaz noted that he would not be doing anything that would put the organization in bad light.
He added: “I cannot commit to the artistes, then turn around and tell them I cannot pay them for their performances.”
The playbill of Champs of Steel Plus formerly Champs in Concert read like the who’s who among Carnival winners in pan, mas, calypso and chutney, both seniors and juniors.
It was an opportunity for locals and visitors alike to “take in Carnival” one more time.
Mr. Diaz also took the opportunity to congratulate all the champions of steel inclusive of the Single Pan Band, Small, Medium and Large Conventional Steel Orchestras as well as all the players/musicians who made it at all stages of the competitions. He also made special mention of the Junior and Youth Steel Orchestras.
Champs of Steel Plus has been a staple on the Carnival calendar of events for over thirty years.
