Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. - In the first title up for grabs in a Panorama season which appeared at times uncertain to come off in the land of pan, Newtown Playboys Steel Symphony became Single Pan champions as they musically trounced the twenty other finalists in the competition.
With several ties along the way, the last year’s dual-champions—Marsicans and Trinidad East Side Symphony—were both unceremoniously dethroned and had to settle for seventh and eleventh places, respectively.
There was a change in proceedings leading up to the finals, which took place at the Arima Basketball Court in east Trinidad. There were no semi-finals, but instead a selection of the twenty-one bands coming out of sixty-seven which participated in the preliminaries.
A ‘newbie’ to the single pan band competitive line-up this year was the T&T (Trinidad & Tobago) Prison Service led musically by Terrence Sealey. Happy that they had qualified for the finals, they tied for seventeenth position overall. The champion band Newtown Playboys is also fairly ‘new,’ relatively speaking, having come on the single pan scene in 2015.
As is customary, the majority of participants in the Single Pan category opt for playing tunes from yesteryear, and 2017 was no different. Favorites like Get Something and Wave, This Melody Sweet, Nah Do Dat and more - were the musical order of the competition, and kept music lovers dancing.
With the Single Pan band component now in the history books, pan music lovers are eagerly looking forward to the conventional steel orchestras as they kick in to high gear, with the first round of preliminaries beginning January 30 in the Eastern, Tobago and South/Central regions.
Prize monies will be distributed at a later date.
