Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. - Three steel orchestras in three categories shone brighter, musically speaking, than the others, in the ears and eyes of the judges at Trinidad & Tobago’s annual Junior National Panorama. Even the rain during the show did not dampen the sounds of steelband joy that emanated as the orchestras performed at the Queen’s Park Savannah in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad on Sunday February 19.
Reigning supreme in the three respective categories were St. Margaret’s Boys’ Anglican School Steel Orchestra in the Primary School category, St. Francois Girls’ College Steel Orchestra among the Secondary schools, and topping the Non-Schools/Elite grouping was Renegades Youth Steel Orchestra. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it - and this works well for the latter. Renegades Youth made history in 2017 with their fourth consecutive championship title - having won working along with their arranger Andrew Charles in each instance - 2014, 2015, 2016 and this year, again - a winning combination.
The tune of choice for Renegades Youth was Leave Me Alone - and the band’s ending scenario was simply priceless, as all the players ducked out and ran off stage, leaving a lone tenor player just looking around wildly at being just that - left ‘alone,’ while the Grand Stand crowd roared in delight. Points for presentation were most probably the max!
The competition theme this year was ‘Committed to Youth Development.’
Per Pan Trinbago: Adjudicators in the Primary School category were: Jeanette Johnson, Michelle Dowrich, Barry Mannette. Joanna Shortt, Kareem Brown and Jill Ann Walters. In the Secondary School category judges were Damion Phillip, Dexter Asson, Maj. Edouard Wade, Maureen Clement, Seion Gomez and Avis Bruce-Brown. Those serving in the Non-Schools/Elite Category were Auburn Wiltshire, Danté Pantin, Darren Sheppard, Ezra Joseph, Sean Lewis and Stephanie Power.
Both the Minister of Education, Anthony Garcia and Acting President Pan Trinbago Richard Forteau addressed the audience.
