Educators' Series
-- When Steel Talks will launch its educational
series next month. The clips have been specially produced by
Basement Recordings, using their unique video/audio "Box and
One Technique" to allow the listener to truly hear, see and
feel world class steel orchestras as they perform. Basement
Recordings is second to none in capturing and reproducing the
spirit, power and beauty of musical performances - from conventional
steel orchestras to pan soloists.
Something different this way comes…
For those for whom a steel drum conjures
up images of a cruise ship or a Caribbean vacation, a pleasant
surprise awaits in the form of a Father’s Day show at Lincoln
Center’s Alice Tully Hall.
The instrument’s humble origins notwithstanding,
pan has played many genres of music, if not as many venues.
The show on June 20th, 2004
marks the debut of the Pan Jazz
format at Lincoln Center.
While hard core aficionados have already been exposed to classical
music and jazz music as played on a double seconds or a tenor
pan, new initiates to the pan instrument will be treated
to the talents of the ADLIB Steel Orchestra, Garvin Blake, Andy
Narell, Arturo Tappin and Liam Teague.

A detailed look at Trinidad and Tobago's panorama 2004»
'Trinidad Panorama 2004 By Numbers''
Here is a real look at the effects
of the changes implemented in this year's event.
The actual
combined performance time of medium bands is approximately 53
minutes. The actual combined performance time of the large bands
is approximately 61 minutes. The theoretical maximum performance
time for both categories was 64 minutes based on the 8 bands
per category and 8 minute performance limit per band.

'My Take! On the 2004 Trinidad Panorama Results'
by a World Music Lover
--- Allow me to share what is
on my mind about the results in the large band category of the
Panorama 2004 in Trinidad which took place on Saturday February
21. I really only got into pan music
a few years ago, but have been basically a 'musician' all my
life. I truly began to appreciate steelband music when
I started to visit pan yards.

'Whap! Cocoyea' by
Mr. Panist Trinidad and
Tobago Panorama 2004 was a night to remember.
I had the opportunity to get down to T'nT and
seized it immediately in anticipation of witnessing a classic.
Undeniably a Bradley/Desperadoes fan, I was in search of a 'Whap!
Cocoyea' victory. I heard the semis over the radio and thought
'damn' - how is [arranger Clive] Bradley going to make up eight
points, Exodus's [semi-finals] margin of victory?

For Those Left Behind "WLIB’s
coverage of the Panorama this weekend was surprisingly well
done."
By AMH
-- Surprising because heretofore we have been treated
commercials interrupted by pan. This time, we got live
coverage at the Savannah, entire renditions of the tunes, and
interviews with none other than David Rudder, Clive Bradley,
and Boogsie Sharpe. The only room for improvement would
have been for them to play the tunes of choice, not repeatedly,
but once for each of us to hear.

The Ugly Cameraman
"Ugly Camera Men & Women Have No Behavior,
No Respect"
Many great things took place at last week's TnT's panorama 2004.
When Steel Talks will take an in-depth look at these accomplishments
in the coming days. However, today, we will bring attention
to the "BIG UGLY" brought to the event by many of the photographers
and videographers who covered the Panorama. Their behavior
was unprofessional, embarrassing and displayed utter contempt
for the performing artists, viewing audience and organizers
of the event... We have never seen such behavior at any
event of this magnitude in the world... Where in the world would
camera people get up in front of a performing act that is simultaneously
being broadcast live and video taped, and continuously block
the audience view??!!

Pan Progress?
The premise
is that smaller “community bands” should benefit from the new
format of Panorama.
By AMH
--
By changing
the format of Panorama, Pan Trinbago has either saved small
band pan, or rang its death knell. Time will tell, but
it seems as if Panorama competitions of the future are destined
be comprised of mostly the same bands.

THE GREAT COCOYEA WAR
By Terry Joseph -- Trinidad Express
"Whadap, Cocoyea!" The battle cry echoed across the Laventille
Hill midnight Tuesday, a warning loud enough to reach a band
from Tunapuna, at which panyard strategists were equally confident
that their plan for "War 2004" would see them through to national
triumph.

Live!
- The CD!
A Review by - Frankie McIntosh
"Rather abruptly, our Sociology professor
asked for an example of a "synergistic collaboration"; silence
pervaded the room; that was during my college freshman year.
Today, without hesitation, I’d holler "the Pantonic Live CD!".
This musical masterpiece is a product of the joint efforts of:
veteran arranger Clive Bradley; the Pantonic Steel Orchestra
led by Keith Roberts...
From The Heart -- A Review
A great production
is accomplished when a great producer has good songs, great
artists/musicians and engineering to capture the great performance
by all the artists. When that is done you can have something
that is truly magical. "From The Heart", the latest CD from
Robert Greenidge has all the above ingredients.

Pantonic
Live! -
The CD! A Review
by --Wanda McCrae
Let me be clear about something right from the start:
Pantonic is not my favorite Brooklyn-based steelband.
Furthermore, Clive Bradley is not my favorite Panorama arranger.
That said, I also need to be very clear about something else:
"Pantonic Live!" is one of
my favorite pan CDs. The reason is simple: I like
good music, and that CD is full of good music, from the first
track to the last.
