It's Congratulations
Again!
Another Successful
Steelband Jamboree
Maryland -
A larger venue, an almost
overwhelmingly hot and sunny afternoon, and a traditional holiday
weekend; add to the mix the anticipation of hours of steelband music,
and you have the makings of the perfect musical summer opener.
PanMasters' eighth annual Pan
Jamboree moved from its 'home' venue of the band's panyard, to a more
spacious locale, little more than a stone's throw away. This time
around, the organizers erected a temporarily-covered area with some
seating available on a first-come, first-served basis. Other
patrons wisely walked with their own 'accommodations.'

Let common sense
prevail
Antigua -
Dear Editor:
I have always heard that mistakes were invented for us to learn
from.
Well, after last year’s drama between the CDC and the frail and
almost non-existent Steel-band Association, no-one would have
expected a repeat in 2006. However, it is unbelievable that we are
just about nine weeks away from Panorama 2006 (3 Aug.) and almost 10
months since last Panorama and plans are yet to be finalised.

Sesame Showcases
A Night of Music, Talent and Art:
Freddy Harris,

and Jambalasi Rock The House
Brooklyn,
New York -
Sesame Flyers
International again took the initiative to create, promote and house a
night of high-level musical performances highlighting the steelpan
family of instruments and showcasing the next generation of top-ranking
steelpan talent this past weekend.
Left far behind were most of
the ills that plague ensembles that feature steelpans as instruments of
choice: bass players, guitar players, keyboard players and drummers who
should be soccer players; bad instruments, bad players, bad sound and
suspect talent - are the norm for many cultural music shows featuring
people behind the steelpan music instruments masquerading as
artists/musicians.

A. Narell |
Andy Narell responds
to Bloomberg News' Craig Copetas
The following is a letter
Narell wrote to Craig Copetas in response to
Copetas' article in the Bloomberg News.
Dear Craig - I finally saw a copy of your Bloomberg News article
last week
('Shell Disowns Oil Drums as Panmen Gather for Soccer World Cup').
I have
to say that I was appalled when I read it, and not only because you
attributed a quote to me that was so inaccurate that I can only
suppose
that you made it up. As Terry Joseph of the Trinidad Express
accurately
summed up in his letter to you, the entire article is misleading,
and
"appoints to Shell Oil an outrageously exaggerated role in the
creation of
the steelpan." I wonder why.

PAN TUNING IN AFRICA
South Africa -
By shear
coincidence, Rainbow High School Steelpan Ensemble of Botswana happened to be doing
a musical presentation before the assembly at Broadhurst Primary School when we
ran into one Anthony Caplan who was at the time blending pans for the host
school. Anthony took time off from his schedule to do a
presentation/demonstration on the Origins of The Steelpan.
It soon became
apparent that the young steelpan enthusiast did his research well.

Dominica's OECS
Junior Steelpan competition
- How It All Came Together
Roseau, Dominica -
It was a long 'holiday' this
past weekend in Dominica, with Mayday celebrated on Monday May 1.
But the fun in the sun started on Sunday April 30, as steelpan
musicians, music lovers, those who appreciated culture, dignitaries,
attendees, and friends and family - descended on the Botanical Gardens
in Dominica.
All roads led to the OECS
Junior Steelpan Competition as people looked forward to fun, sun and pan
performances of a high level from some of the region's most promising
young pannists. Saturday afternoon at the gardens had seen almost
endless preparation as the finishing arrangements were put in place for
Sunday's event. Tents were being set up, platforms built, and
necessary infrastructure transported for the show.

Young

Trinidad - Fourteen-year-old Anisha Simon who was shot and
killed in a panyard in Arima last year, did not die in vain. I
say this without reservation after making my rounds of the
various panyards during the recently concluded Pan Down Memory
Lane and Pan in the 21st Century competitions.
It was amazing to see how many
young pannists took part in the competitions especially the
girls who out numbered the boys as much as two to one

Memorable Steelband
Images
in Dominica
Roseau, Dominica -
There were opportunities for the
When Steel Talks
crew to interact with, and capture participants in the April 30 OECS
Junior Steelpan competition before the actual event. It began at
Melville Hall airport as several turbo-prop flights touched down.
The planes came bearing Dominican
nationals, visitors, and returning and first-time Ross University
students accompanied by parents, relatives and friends. There was
a significant element added to this lot - pan musicians, arrangers,
managers and other related personnel, all scheduled to perform at the
steelpan event.

'All Ah We Is One
Family'
at the OECS Junior Steelpan Competition
Roseau, Dominica -
Caribbean unity was not just a theme,
but became an actuality when it was put into practice in Dominica for the
recently-concluded OECS Junior
Steelpan Competition. Five steel orchestras traveled to Dominica
to compete in the event, and one other as guest artists for the show.
Not one orchestra was exempt from the
trials and tribulations such as flight delays, being "bumped off" flights,
the arbitrary and nonchalant breaking up of chaperoned groups of young
musicians by discourteous airport airline personnel and put on later
flights, and errant luggage and music instruments. In many instances, steelpan
instruments and personal belongings made much later appearances
than their owners - up to the morning of the competition.

Where are we now?
Music, the Steelpan instrument and Education:
A Panel Discussion
Dominica's OECS
Junior Pan Competition
Roseau, Dominica -
As an added component to the OECS Junior Pan
Competition a panel discussion was convened at the Garraway Hotel.
"Where are we today, and how far have we come?" was the central theme of
the discussion. Athie Martin - a local Dominican
media personality, former president of the Dominican Steelband Association,
and tenor player with Dominica's famed but now-defunct Vauxhall
Steel Band - was the moderator. The panelists included some of the best
forward-thinking and progressive musical minds in the Caribbean who
are active in this arena.
Vanessa Headley, Victor Prescod,
Mrs. Franka Hills-Headley and Richard Pierre served on the panel for
this year's 2006 OECS Junior Steelpan discussion.

It was serious business, brokering

Show we are proud
of steel pan ambassadors
Antigua
- For years, the Antiguans who truly love the steel band have
tried everything in their power to lift the art form from
death’s door, where it was once precariously positioned. They
revived it and have moulded it into something, which has
captured the imagination of hundreds of the country’s young
citizens.
This is a huge bonus for this
country, which over the last few years has seen the development
of serious gang activity and the destruction of many of the
nation’s youth.

Pan From Down Under
Australia
- Last week over 70 children - members of the Revesby Revellers,
the Starlighters and Fields of Pan steel bands came together to
perform for the launch of Education Week at the Sydney Equestrian
Centre. The children thrilled the audience - many of whom have
never heard a steel band before. It was a wonderful experience for
the students, as well, to play in such a large band. The performers
ranged in age from 7 to 12 years.

A Success
Dominica
- The first OECS Junior

to attend next year's event immediately. You will not be
disappointed. The Dominica Steelband
Association under the leadership and vision of Ms. Anna Raffoul
presented a creditable and entertaining musical event. Simply
put: steelpan is back in the Caribbean island of Dominica in a big
way, and the sky is the limit. Far more important than the
actual results and band placements, was the participation of
different islands - providing a truly international music summit.

the first of its kind in Dominica. Ms. Raffoul's bubbly and
outgoing personality provided a veneer for the shrewdness and
determination that was pivotal in the success in pulling off this type
of event with no government involvement. The country's Botanical
