The “Mixty
Motions”
of Ralph MacDonald
Revealed The Epic Interview
In the Spotlight
Percussionist Ralph MacDonald is visual and sometimes quietly intense
but always expressive, and is a compendium of unique island and
conventional percussive rhythms. The
When Steel Talks (WST)
crew was privileged to sit down with the dynamic musician in his
Stamford, Connecticut home and preview Mixty Motions
his newest CD before its release. MacDonald has done a lot of
interviews, but only here with WST,
in addition to the detailed look at Mixty Motions, does the world
get the inside scoop on his full relationship with the steelpan, and his
intimate connection with what is the national instrument of Trinidad and
Tobago, and hear him proudly proclaim that his favorite orchestra is the
mighty Desperadoes Steel Orchestra nestled in the hills of Laventille...

'Boogsie' out of hospital, back at rehearsals
Trinidad, W.I.
- 'Boogsie' out of hospital, back at rehearsals
Steelband arranger and icon Len "Boogsie" Sharpe is out of hospital and
back on his feet after being rushed for treatment on Boxing Day for
problems related to his diabetes, a spokesman said yesterday.
Sharpe was admitted to West Shore Medical Centre, Cocorite that
afternoon after complaining of not feeling well. The spokesman explained
that Sharpe's medical problems were due to what he ate during the
Christmas season and his blood pressure had also risen.
He recalled that Sharpe came out of hospital that same day and rehearsed
with the Phase II Pan Groove at their panyard in Woodbrook that night.

Teacher beats drum for
steel band classes
Phoenix, Arizona - When
Basha High School’s steel band started a little more than two years ago,
it had just 10 students. Now it has close to 100.
Teacher Luke Abrahamson wants to expand his love of music and
appreciation for Caribbean culture even further by offering classes to
the community. In January he will begin the Chandler community steel
drum band.
“I want to raise the general support for art in our community,” he said.
His long-term plan includes arranging performances for the band, with
proceeds benefiting local charities and scholarship funds.
But first, students will need to learn to drum. Beginning Jan. 8,
Abrahamson will offer twice weekly evening classes at Basha.
Middlesbrough, England -
They've got an enviable reputation. Abingdon School Steel
Band have performed at Middlesbrough Town Hall and The
Riverside. And now they've conquered the BBC Tees reception
area. Fahad and Zunera from the band tell us a bit more...
"We auditioned for the Steel Band in July 2007.
"Ten children were chosen and then we practiced five songs
during summer school."
In September the group started performing at different
occasions. First gig was at the Town Hall Council Chambers
for the Citizenship Ceremony. Next it was the Middlesbrough
Road Race.

McCallum marching band headed to
Chicago
Austin, Texas, USA -
The Knights of Steel band at McCallum High School has been
rehearsing for a big show -- the Midwest Clinic in Chicago.
The marching band is heading north on Wednesday to take part
in the international band and orchestra conference.
"There's not a lot of schools that have steel band programs
and so we also are thinking of ourselves as showing
everybody the art form and what students can do," Matt
Ehlers, Assistant Band Director, said.
McCallum's steel drum program started 10 years ago with two
pans. The school now has 12. It also offers a class for
beginners and an advanced class.

St. Croix steel-pan performer making inroads in
entertainment industry in Florida
St. Croix, USVI -
Steel-pan performer Shamell Proctor, who honed his skills
locally, is now making a name for himself in Florida clubs
and restaurants.
The 28-year-old Tampa resident started playing at 8 in local
steel bands and has parlayed that talent into a professional
career on the entertainment circuit in Florida.
Proctor, a Central High School graduate, said he initially
got involved with the steel pan while in third grade and
attended a summer program at Ricardo Richards Elementary
School. He said he always has loved the steel pan and
enjoyed performing with Pan Connection Steel Orchestra at
the school. "But as I grew up, I never thought that I would
have been able to build a career out of doing something that
I love so much," he said.

Steel-band sound brings music of Trinidad to middle
school students
Florida, USA
- Keith Superville was walking the halls of The Villages Charter
Middle School when he heard a familiar melody.
Superville, the school custodian, who is originally from
Trinidad, immediately recognized the steel drum beats that
came from inside the gym.
“I was wondering who was playing it,” he said.
The musical treat was Caribbean Sound, a steel drum band
that played two concerts Thursday for pupils.
Principal Mark Pienkos pulled Superville into the gym so he
could enjoy the music, which he said was “lovely.”
The concert was organized by school music director Kevin
Blackstock, who has been introducing the music of Trinidad
to his music appreciation class and wanted the entire
student body to benefit from the musical history lesson.

Day Three
Antigua & Barbuda
-
It is now day three of the Moods of Pan 2007 Festival and it is also the
final night. Thus far, it has been two days of great entertainment with
the steelpan instrument as the leading act. Tonight is called
"Another Side of Pan" where, in the tradition of great
final nights at previous Moods of Pan festivals, some awesome musical
performances have been delivered by some very great acts. This
year would not break from that tradition. In fact, it would add to
the mystique of the Sunday evening "Another Side of Pan" legacy.
