“The Bradley
Years”
The
Bradley Years represent the definitive collection
of steelband music arrangements and performances
for a large steel orchestra. This collection
showcases seven classic arrangements from the
master arranger Clive Bradley. Bradley
is considered to be the best steelband music
arranger ever by many, including his peers.
In addition, the arrangements are performed
by one of the finest steelbands in the world,
New York’s Pantonic Steel Orchestra. Clive Bradley
had a very special relationship with Pantonic.
This orchestra clinched the title of panorama
champions five times in seven years - performing
Bradley’s musical works. The performances
were captured by Basement Recordings days before,
and in one instance, mere moments before they
took the stage for the prestigious annual steelband
music panorama competition.
The recordings
capture, reproduce and present an unrivalled
clarity with sonic realism, of a large steel
orchestra fielding between one hundred and one
hundred twenty musicians - unlike any other
steelband music recordings in its class.
This body
of musical work is a sterling addition for all
fans, educators, players, historians and fine
music collectors.

Pan Trinbago needs $25m for 2015 steelband conference

|
Trinidad
& Tobago, W.I. -
Pan Trinbago needs $25 million to bring off the
planned International Conference and Panorama (ICP)
scheduled for August 2015.
The organisation’s president,
Keith Diaz, made the announcement yesterday at a
news conference at the Grand Stand, Queen’s Park
Savannah, Port of Spain.
Diaz said his line ministry
(Arts and Multiculturalism) told him he should
get the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of
Trade and the Ministry of Tourism involved in
the project.
The purpose of the conference
is to establish an International Organisation
for Pan with its headquarters in Trinidad and
Tobago.
Ground work for the
conference is ongoing and Pan Trinbago has been
talking with interested countries. The delegates
at the conference will choose an executive for
this International Organisation.
“People are excited about the
ICP, even as far off as Australia and New
Zealand, UK, USA, Poland, Greece and the
Caribbean,’’ said Diaz.

Laventille to Brooklyn, A Phenomenal People - A Great
Day for the Steelpan and Community
Laventille Pan Family Reunion 2014

|
New York, USA -
On a balmy Brooklyn
Summer night some two thousand-plus miles away
from its namesake (Laventille) - D’Radoes Steel
Orchestra held its 2nd annual ‘Laventille Pan
Family Reunion’ Day in its panyard. The packed
yard was a reminder of the love, special bond
between a people, and strength of the community
spirit of the people of Laventille all over the
world.
....People came together in
droves, ‘dressed to the nines’ (many already
kitted out in the 2014 Desperadoes/Tokyo
commemorative shirts made just for this event)
to recall old times, celebrate the achievements
and successes of Laventille citizens, renew old
friendships and most of all - to remember and
reaffirm their greatness, both to themselves and
to the outside world through Pan. Philadelphia
Pan Stars, Despers USA and the host D’Radoes
Steel Orchestra were on hand for musical
performances.

UAH Steel Drum Band hits sweet spot

|
Alabama, USA -
There's
something about the tintinnabulation of a steel
drum that transports the listener to the
sun-soaked islands of the Caribbean. And there's
no doubt that magical quality has contributed to
the recent rise in popularity of steel drum
bands at college campus across the U.S.
"There's just no sound like
it," says Deborah Loach, a music instructor and
the director of the steel drum band at The
University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH). "When
we play, people come up and thank us. They say
they're more relaxed, or it reminds them of a
cruise they took to the islands."
Each semester, the band forms
anew from students who opt to take the once
weekly, half-credit chamber ensemble class for
steel drums. Some are returning players familiar
with how the drums are played; others are
first-timers lured by the instrument's unique
appeal. Either way, all are welcome.

|
Kingston,
Jamaica, W.I. -
Hundreds of patrons turned up at the Karram

The show featured
Trinidad-born, Toronto-based master panist

and Harold Davis.
"This is the third year and
so far, the concert has raised on average of
around $500,000," Audley Betton, chairman of the

Trinidad
& Tobago, W.I. -
Leon F Simeon is a Trinidad-born graphic
designer, teacher, digital artist and
photographer with an affinity for pan. Residing
in America for the past 34 years, he returned
home on July 14 to see his 94-year-old mother,
and to stage an exhibition of his works in
Port-of-Spain.
....“I am a true South and
Benedict’s boy. I went to school with guys like
Warren Archibald, Bede Wells and Jan Steadman.
Those were the days of coach Wooter and Dom
Basil Matthews. Although I can’t play the
instrument, I have been very much a pan
enthusiast. I’ve always liked the instrument and
my favourite steelband was Fonclaire,” said
Simeon.
....Simeon will mount his
Panology exhibition at the Nalis Building, on
Abercromby Street, Port-of-Spain on July 28. The
exhibition, which runs until July 31, has the
blessings of Pan Trinbago and a number of iconic
steelband musicians and technicians are expected

Passionate panist for August concert
|
Trinidad
& Tobago, W.I. - He
was dubbed “A Trinidad and Tobago Steel Pan
virtuoso” at age 15 by adjudicator Dr Jessel
Murray.
Richarde’ Bereaux found his passion at age six,
when he began experimenting on the national
instrument, the steelpan.
....Bereaux was crowned the
under-16 Pan Trinbago National Junior Soloist
Champion in 2005. And over the years he received
24 trophies at the biennial Trinidad and Tobago
National Music Festival.
In 2004, 2006 and 2008, he
took the title for the Under-19 champion at
three consecutive music festivals.
....In March 2012, Bereaux
auditioned for Berklee College and received a
partial scholarship. He began his degree in
Professional Music the same year.
....Bereaux has returned to
Trinidad to host the second of his annual
concerts in August. “Last year was a
struggle in terms of getting things done, but
this time things flowed a lot smoother because
people actually recognise what we are doing. It
is young people under 25, very professional on
instruments. I have a group from Barbados coming
in for the show,” he said.

Musical pioneers go panning for gold
|
Northumberland,
England - Blending the
traditional with Trinidad, youngsters from north
Northumberland are taking part in the largest
celebration of newly-composed music the UK has
seen.
Drawn from Wooler’s Steel
Quake and Berwick’s Mango Music Shed, a dozen
young steel-pan players, aged nine to 20, are
the core musicians in Panning for Gold, a new
composition by Northumbrian musician Alistair
Anderson.
Commissioned by Sage
Gateshead, as part of The New Music Biennial,
Alistair was asked to create new music that
would blend the windswept energy of Northumbrian
traditional music with the sunny optimism of
Trinidad – home of the steel-pan tradition.
The young pan players are
joined by scratch DJ Adam Cogdon, clog-dancer
Laura Connolly, composer Alistair Anderson on
concertina and Wendy Doyle as pan soloist.

St. Lucia 2014 Panorama Results - Pantime Steel Orchestra Takes Consecutive Championship Title
Harmonites Steel Orchestra makes it Four
Consecutive Wins in ‘Small Band Category’
 |
Gros Islet, St. Lucia, W.I. -
There is the old adage that is adhered to and routinely put in practice by all elite Panorama performing steel orchestras all over the world - "Take the judging out of the judges’ hands." In other words - drop such an overwhelming and commanding performance that the only thing in doubt is who is coming in second and/or third. Halfway through their performance, PanTime Steel Orchestra made it very clear there would not be any contest for first place on this warm July night in St. Lucia. Whether you heard the performance live in the stadium, on the radio or via the internet the opinion would be the same. PanTime’s rendition of Dream Big as arranged by Amrit Samaroo was awesome. There was never a lull in the performance. It kept building from the opening count to the end, with a small reprieve within the arrangement that drew on a small adaptation of the ‘Impossible Dream,’ to drive the storytelling aspect home. With the final note the crowd roared and erupted into spontaneous applause. There was no doubt about the outcome.

These two are music legends

In the House That D’Radoes Built, Brooklyn Steelbands Drop Musical Thunder... 2014

|
Brooklyn, New York -
Seven steel orchestras
were present (nine were actually advertised) -
Hearts of Steel, Pan Sonatas, Pantonic, Despers
USA, CASYM, Crossfire and the host D’Radoes. The
six orchestras able to perform gave an excellent
musical accounting of themselves. Beyond the
high musicianship, the personality of the bands
came through at this launch - an aspect which is
critical in any substantive critique of
authentic, community-based-steel orchestras.
Entertainment value and audience connectivity
were on point.

Dr. Frank Anthony to face steel pan music in Parliament
|
Guyana, S.A. -
The operation of the
Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport is once
again under scrutiny, this time for hiring a
foreign steel pan tuner and for not inviting
prominent local tuners to a training workshop
purportedly held during Mashramani 2014
celebrations.
On Thursday, Minister Dr. Frank Anthony, is
expected to supply the National Assembly with an
oral response on these issues that are bothering
local pan tuners.
This is not the first time that the Minister
would be answering questions on this matter. The
Minister’s initial responses have prompted
additional questions.
A Partnership for National Unity’s Member of
Parliament, Christopher Jones, yesterday, said
he is anxiously awaiting Dr. Anthony’s response
since pan tuners have dismissed earlier claims
Dr. Anthony made in Parliament.
Jones said that pan tuners had approached him
about the Ministry’s behaviour during this
year’s Mashramani celebrations.

A Sugar Sphinx Rises in Brooklyn

|
Brooklyn, New York -
“Wow!” is the first
thing that comes to mind as you initially gaze
upon the giant structure, made of white refined
sugar within the fairly dark interior - lit
mainly by the sun filtering through panes of
glass high above.
“A Subtlety” by artist Kara
Walker is a living, breathing history lesson in
another dark chapter of the Americas. Moreover,
it is an experience. As quietly as it is kept,
the legacy and appetite for sugar and slavery
cannot be separated. Housed in the now-defunct
historic Brooklyn Domino Sugar factory along the
waterfront of the East River, the giant ‘Sugar
Sphinx’ speaks to the terrible conditions and
suffering by those who bore the brutality of
this industry at its inception.

championships for Sion Hill Euphonium Steel
Orchestra
|
Kingstown,
St. Vincent & the Grenadines -
History was again made when Sion Hill Euphonium
Steel Orchestra kept their national Panorama
title for an unprecedented sixth consecutive
year at Victoria Park in the country’s capital
of Kingstown. Though there was a bit of rain at
one point during the competition, there was no
raining on the parade of Sion Hill Euphonium
when they took the stage as the second largest
steel orchestra of the evening.
With sixty-five musicians playing Ron Pompey’s
Ah Bussing It as arranged by Seion Gomez, the
champion steel orchestra struck their first
notes at precisely 10:00 p.m. on Carnival
Thursday in St. Vincent & The Grenadines....Ten minutes later when they ended their
title defense, the crowd roared and bestowed
tumultuous applause upon Sion Hill Euphonium in
appreciation.
