Australia -  While the 1st Steelpan Festival was produced on a grander scale, enabled by significant grants and the involvement the entire community of Marysville, the 2nd Festival faced challenges of funding, and competing events in Brisbane (Brisbane Festival).  The event was scaled down from the original plans, but the spirit and love for the pan was just as strong or even stronger. This is because people had already established a connection with each other from the first Festival, and a good sign of development were new bands joining in the event.

Brooklyn, New York -  Several community organizations, along with the National Dental Association, have collaborated to plan a salute to Dr. Winthrop Holder, a dental surgeon who has served residents of Brooklyn and beyond for many years, both in his professional capacity and in his abiding interest and involvement in cultural and community affairs. An Appreciation Evening in honor of Dr. Holder, who has been forced into retirement on account of illness, is scheduled for Sunday evening, October 4 at Tropical Paradise Ballroom in Brooklyn.

Brooklyn, New York -  The 2015 New York Panorama season will go down as one of the most challenging and difficult ever experienced by the New York steel orchestra franchises. The devil was working overtime on every aspect of this season's Panorama check list and essentials. They, the steel orchestras, suffered through and caught much hell. All the bands were a little punch drunk from all the blows they received both externally and internally in the last few weeks leading up to the competition. In fact the season was so difficult it is amazing so many orchestras made it to the stage Panorama night. An incredible achievement by both players and management. A testament to their fortitude and love of culture. And in the final analysis some outstanding music was created.

New York, USA -  It ought to have received priority focus by gate keepers well before now and, who knows, the horse may already have been too long bolted from the stable. But there’s a good case to be made that Panorama, having arrived in 1963 in Trinidad and Tobago as a fine addition to the Carnival tapestry, has come to be a dominating presence on the steelpan scene that for years has had a suffocating effect on other avenues of growth potential for the art form. Pigeonholing steelpan music as musical novelty good only for a designated setting or settings does a disservice to a stunning artistic invention. A myopic take on pan’s possibilities gaining credence elsewhere than in Trinidad and Tobago is unfortunate. But any trend toward stifling the pan’s potential in its birthplace betrays mind-boggling misdirection. Sadly, such a turn has indeed been taken; a disproportionate emphasis on Panorama has been a major contributing factor.
