Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. - Defending champions Pan Elders maintain their lead going into the finals with a top score of 279 in this, the medium steel orchestra category of the 2018 Trinidad and Tobago National Panorama. Led by Duvone Stewart playing an ‘oldie,’ “Limbo Break,” the steel orchestra now looks ahead to the February 10 competition. If successful, it will be Pan Elders’ fifth consecutive championship in the medium category.
Under beautiful skies in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, at the Queen’s Park Savannah, the much-anticipated semi-finals in the medium conventional steel orchestras began with the first notes being struck at 1:24 p.m. It was Katzenjammers Steel Orchestra from sister isle Tobago playing “Lorraine” arranged by Terrance “BJ” Marcelle - just after the president of Pan Trinbago, Keith Diaz, had closed of his welcoming remarks to the pan lovers assembled for what would be several hours of sweet pan from some of the best bands - in the Land of Pan. The semi finals for the medium category were underway.
The bands flowed seemingly effortlessly one after the other on this Sunday January 28, with the performances of all fourteen steel orchestras done by 5:44 p.m., local time. Curepe Scherzando Steel Orchestra was the final band in the category. The semi finals for the large steel orchestras followed after the medium bands wrapped up.
The top ten move on to the February 10, 2018 National Panorama finals which will be held at the same venue - Queen’s Park Savannah or “The Big Yard” as it is affectionately known.
Results were delivered after both the medium and large categories concluded.
