Bradley Time
Is Panorama Time
A Musical Analysis of the Great One

The late great master arranger Clive Bradley was the world's greatest steelband music composer/arranger.

The upcoming Trinidad and Tobago steelband music panorama competition will mark the second consecutive time the event will take place without the grand presence of the master musician.  Panorama time was Bradley's time, more so than any other time of the year.  Bradley's larger-than-life-figure and all-world talent simply dominated every aspect and component of the event.  Win or lose, it was always about Bradley.  He was and will continue to be, the measuring stick by which others will be judged for some time to come.

Bradley's music and life are required listening, viewing and studying whether you are into music or not.  In this regard When Steel Talks will revisit  an analysis of one of the musical works of Clive Bradley, by another great mind out of the Caribbean, keyboardist extraordinaire Frankie McIntosh.  Mr. McIntosh is also one of the finest musicians ever to emanate from the Caribbean.

The hills are alive -
Robbie returns to Desperadoes

Trinidad - WITCO Desperadoes is proceeding full speed ahead with its preparations for Panorama 2007. Desperadoes' tune of choice is the Amrit Samaroo composition, Band from Space.

Robert Greenidge has returned to arrange for Desperadoes this year. Band member Andre Robley and former Captain Curtis Edwards have been the "in house" arrangers since 2006 and began work on the Panorama arrangement some weeks ago.

Ray Holman is Back!
Starlift set to reach Higher Heights in 2007
Trinidad & Tobago Steelband Panorama 2007

Trinidad - Ray Holman is the arranger who literally in 2006, resurrected Starlift Steel Orchestra and brought them back to their glory days.  Like the proverbial phoenix rising from the ashes, the band which did not make it out of the preliminary round in 2005, was back with a bang last year, working alongside band alumnus and world-famous musician Ray Holman as arranger, who resolutely hauled them into the semi-finals, and then to third place overall in the championship round.

Starlift Steel Orchestra, who also celebrated their fiftieth anniversary last year, is entering the competition with another Ray Holman composition in 2007 - 'We Just Can't Go on Like This.'

We Just Can't Go on Like This
Ray Holman & Designer Team-Up for Trinidad & Tobago Panorama 2007

Ray Holman, the consummate musician, is one of steelpan music's most respected and prolific composers.  For the upcoming Trinidad & Tobago steelband music competition, Ray has teamed up with the popular and versatile vocalist Keith "Designer" Prescott to produce 'We Just Can't Go On Like This'.

The deeply thought-provoking piece takes a serious look at the social issues of Trinidad and Tobago.  'We Just Can't Go On Like This' is a natural follow-up to last year's composition by Ray called 'If We Really Want'.

Junia Regrello of Skiffle Bunch
Speaks On
Trinidad & Tobago Steelband Panorama 2007

Trinidad - This year is perhaps the one where the captain of Skiffle Bunch Steel Orchestra, Junia Regrello, will be his busiest.  In addition to his regular commitment to and panorama preparation with Skiffle Bunch, Regrello is one of the people playing a major and pivotal role on the national panorama scene in 2007.  The panorama finals for the medium and large conventional steel orchestras will be held at Skinner Park, San Fernando in south Trinidad, for the first time in the competition's history, due to the demolition of the Grand Stand in the Queen's Park Savannah, Port-of-Spain, in north Trinidad.  Historically only the small conventional orchestra and the single pan band finals have graced the southern stage.  And as San Fernando City Corporation Alderman, Junia Regrello is one of the key people involved in ensuring the success of this historical first.

Steelband Arranger
Amrit Samaroo

Speaks On
Trinidad & Tobago Steelband Panorama 2007

Trinidad - When Steel Talks spoke with young Trinbagonian arranger Amrit Samaroo, who is arranging on the national panorama scene in the 'regular'  conventional steel orchestra category in Trinidad and Tobago for the first time. For the Junior national panorama, Amrit is the customary arranger for Renegades Youth Steel Orchestra, and has taken them to winner’s row in the past; in 2006, the band was second.

For 2007, that scenario has changed, and Amrit is arranging for Lee Chong’s Pan Glow based in South Trinidad; the orchestra is competing in the medium category.  However, the outside world has already recognized and employed Amrit Samaroo's talents as a steelband music arranger.  For the past couple of years, he worked with St. Lucia’s Pantimes Steel Orchestra, and for 2006, they took second place honors with a difference of just one-half of a point.

Caribbean Groove Warms Crowd

Maine - As cold as it was this Saturday, the Bates College Steel Pan Orchestra provided an escape to the Caribbean as close as Olin Arts Center. Director Shawn Thwaites brought an orchestra of 11 into a tight and supremely rich groove, whether they were 'Jammin' with Bob Marley or exploring Thwaites's own originals.

Among these originals was "Bates Groove," which was offered to Bates as a new theme song. With a great second-line rhythm, the groove lays down a catchy verse and chorus. The chorus ended with two distinctive hits, on which one can shout, "Bates Groove!"

Pan Is Not A Desolate Child

Comboulay Carnival

Michael Leroi Joseph Public Relations Officer of Pan Trinbago Speaks

Trinidad - The Steel band has spoken, is speaking and will always speak, especially on matters relating to Steel band affairs. Pan doesn't need patronage, especially the kind coming from the culture vultures on some of those call-in programs over the electronic media.

To hear them express their love and concern for the Steelband around carnival time is enough to make any stranger believe that pan is a desolate child whose mother has died.  They keep searching for a place in the carnival to put Steelband.  Give them Sunday - Carnival Sunday that is- all to themselves.  That would be just right for them.  Now tell me who ask them to patronise PAN?

Pan Trinbago:
All 16 big bands for semis

Trinidad - All 16 large steelbands registered for the Panorama competition are to advance to the semi-final round on February 4, Pan Trinbago announced yesterday.

Pan Trinbago had first considered sending 14 large bands after the preliminary judging in the panyards, but appears to have changed its mind since only 16 large steel orchestras are registered for the competition. In a release, Pan Trinbago said the 16 large bands will move on to the semi-finals, as well as 14 small and 14 medium bands.

Pan Trinbago sources said panmen had opposed the recommendation for 14 large bands given that only 16 had entered the competition. But the advance of the 16 bands does not mean that they will be excluded from preliminary judging, sources said. Judges are still to visit the large bands panyards, which will determine their ranking going into the semi-finals, sources told Newsday.

Pushing pan to a higher level

Trinidad - Hardly did the New Year begin when thousands of young Trinbagonians began filtering into pan yards to begin preparations for this season's Panorama competition. It is a ritual that, like so many cultural manifestations, we continue to take for granted. But these players continue, year after year, to contribute to the national festival for little or no financial reward.

Many of the bands themselves are hard put to fund what is a high-cost operation, particularly those that are unsponsored, which is why Government steps in with varying levels of funding to motivate these exercises that require a discipline, particularly from those age groups and, indeed, communities where discipline is said to be in short supply.

Phase II needs help

Trinidad - Reigning National Panorama Champion Phase II Pan Groove is in dire straits financially as it prepares to defend its title.

The band's leader/arranger, Len "Boogsie" Sharpe, yesterday called on the corporate sector to support the band in its attempt to score that elusive hat trick as well as claim its fifth overall Panorama championship. Sharpe estimated that it will take the band about $500,000 to ready itself for the competition, which kicks off next week with preliminary judging in the respective panyards of the participating bands. Sharpe said he knows that the only opponent posing any threat to Phase II is the band itself and he and his pannists are coming out to "share licks on all takers come Carnival Saturday".

The Caribbean Steel International Orchestra performs at EMMAS Festival in Olbia, Sardinia

Sardinia, Italy  - The Caribbean Steel International Orchestra was invited to perform at the Ethnic Meeting of Music and Arts (EMMAS) in Olbia, Sardinia during the weekend of the 29th- 31st December 2006.

Olbia is situated in northeastern Sardinia and means a "happy town" (città felice). In the 60's, Olbia underwent a real demographical boom and extensive tourism development of the area.
Nowadays, the city's population is over 50,000 and extends over a surface bigger than the city of Sassari - the capital of province. This expansion has been achieved thanks partially to Olbia's harbour, which has become the most important port for passengers in Italy, and partially because of its international airport. Olbia is not only a destination for vacationers passing through the Costa Smeralda (Emerald Coast); it has become a true tourist location able to satisfy even the needs of the most demanding.

2007 Trinidad & Tobago Panorama Finals
To Be Held In Southern Trinidad

Michael Leroi Joseph of Pan Trinbago Speaks

Trinidad - The positions being stated by certain steelband leaders about the Panorama Finals being held in Skinner’s park in San Fernando do not surprise me one bit. Being around the movement as long as I have and listening to some of the leaders talk in public and in private, I knew that steelbandsmen were still in a dogfight and it will take us some time to rise to the occasion. What is this occasion?  Steelbands have become big business all over the world except in T&T. Today people are leaving universities and joining the steel pan industry, making it their career. But here in the land of its birth we fighting year after year over a competition that is taking us nowhere. It’s a dead end situation.

It is time we look rationally at the real position in which we find ourselves. How many bands really benefit from Panorama? After six to eight weeks of sacrifice the majority of steelbands end up down-spirited and dejected in their panyards long before Ash Wednesday.
