“The Bradley
Years”
The
Bradley Years represent the definitive collection
of steelband music arrangements and performances
for a large steel orchestra. This collection
showcases seven classic arrangements from the
master arranger Clive Bradley. Bradley
is considered to be the best steelband music
arranger ever by many, including his peers.
In addition, the arrangements are performed
by one of the finest steelbands in the world,
New York’s Pantonic Steel Orchestra. Clive Bradley
had a very special relationship with Pantonic.
This orchestra clinched the title of panorama
champions five times in seven years - performing
Bradley’s musical works. The performances
were captured by Basement Recordings days before,
and in one instance, mere moments before they
took the stage for the prestigious annual steelband
music panorama competition.
The recordings
capture, reproduce and present an unrivalled
clarity with sonic realism, of a large steel
orchestra fielding between one hundred and one
hundred twenty musicians - unlike any other
steelband music recordings in its class.
This body
of musical work is a sterling addition for all
fans, educators, players, historians and fine
music collectors.

SteelPan Magic at the Beijing University of Chemical Technology
“It was like magic”
|
Beijing, China - It
was like magic,” said one of the professors at
the Beijing University of Chemical Technology
after the performance by the Trinidad & Tobago
Chinese Steel Ensemble on the evening of Tuesday
April 29.
It was the first time that most of the audience,
comprised of teaching staff, students and family
members were hearing the sound of sweet steel.
The professor couldn’t believe the melodious
sound coming from an oil drum and wondered if he
were listening to a piano.

Friends celebrate Hugh
Borde at 81 T&T’s
pan ‘Liberace’
|
Trinidad & Tobago,
W.I. - The names Hugh
Borde, Tripoli Steelband and Wladziu “Liberace”
Valentino may not be familiar to many young pan
musicians, musicians in general or random
adults, but to the history of pan, hopefully,
they are.
Back in the 1960-80s, then
steelband manager Hugh Borde—considered a “mad
man to leave his ‘government’ job to go away
with a steelband”—and his pan ensemble, Tripoli,
were special in the eyes of the First World when
we in Trinidad (The Mecca of Pan) couldn’t
recognise the beam of light.
....In a video expose named
Pan Story produced by Borde and his son, Emile
(LA, USA), on the Tripoli-Borde-Liberace
experience, a particular post-performance
footage shows Liberace introducing a
similarly-attired Hugh Borde to the audience
when he jokingly tells him, “I have a concern …
where do you get your idea from for your
‘costume’?”
Borde, with a huge grin,
replies, “as everybody can see … from Liberace!”
This special pan icon—Trinidad’s Liberace, Hugh
Borde—recently turned 81-years-old.

Beyond the bacchanal
|
Trinidad & Tobago,
W.I. - In his classic
Beyond a Boundary, CLR James used cricket as the
vehicle for analysing the social environment in
T&T including its social stratification.
....Apart from valid concerns
about the increasing vulgarity in the mas there
was the usual bacchanal and controversy with
protests over the results of several
competitions. The disputes included the
prestigious Band of the Year title which went to
a steelband, the popular Neal and Massy Trinidad
All Stars....While there may be some
justification in questioning the criteria used
to select a winner, it is still an important
victory as it points to some new possibilities
for the steelband movement.

And it was a special evening for Despers USA and

But in
actuality and reality this is the beginning of
the story. In an event appropriately called

pun intended a complete “joy” for the packed

he’s succeeding.
“The fact that we have five

strong indicator that we are achieving that,”
said Potts, event organizer and band member of

think about steelpan, not only in the Midwest,

$47M to fix Pan HQ
|
Trinidad & Tobago,
W.I. - Trinidad &
Tobago, W.I. - Housing Minister, Dr Roodal
Moonilal, said it will take $47 million to fix
the incomplete Pan Trinbago headquarters on the
Churchill-Roosevelt Highway.
Speaking on the Finance Bill
2014 last Friday night in the Lower House,
Moonilal scoffed that the building had
originally been designed to hold two storeys but
that someone had decided to insert an extra
floor without raising the roof.
Describing the structure as a
“two-and-a-half storey” building, he said the
project had never got approval from WASA, so to
date a sewer system cannot be installed and the
building remains without any water connection or
drains.

For Tennicia DeFreitas, it’s music

For a long time, the name
Tennicia DeFreitas has been synonymous with
Calypso and steel pan. Winning the Junior
Calypso Crown three years in a row—2006, 2007
and 2008—sealed her place in the history of
local calypso. She continued to enter the junior
calypso category until 2012; placing 3rd
and 2nd in 2009 and 2011 respectively
and winning in 2010 and 2012. During that time
she had also won the Health song competition
twice, 2010 and 2011 and placed 2nd
in 2012.
Tennicia has also been
playing steel pan for years and she is currently
a member of the Parkside Steel Orchestra.

Panorama 2013 Panyard Recordings
by Basement Recordings
|
New York, USA
- For this year 2013, Basement Recordings captured
six of Brooklyn’s finest steel orchestras franchises
as part of their annual panyard panorama music recording
series. All the orchestras operated at very high
level this year and were indeed deserving of having
their musical performance captured and preserved
for the historical, cultural and community archives.
....The steel orchestras
recorded this year are Despers USA; Pantonic; CrossFire;
D’Radoes; Sonatas and CASYM, the eventual 2013 Panorama
champion.
