Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. - Part of the ‘Savannah Party’ they are, but seventeen large steel orchestras will get down to serious business, the task of making the cut for the finals, even as steelband music lovers enjoy hours of performances to the max. Harmonites Steel Orchestra has returned to competition and is first on stage for the evening.
The reigning Panorama champion, Exodus Steel Orchestra, performs in position four and is in second place after the preliminary round in its panyard. The bands hail from four regions: East, South/Central, Tobago and North. According to event organizer Pan Trinbago, all preliminary participants automatically move on to the semi-finals this year.
Renegades Steel Orchestra is currently in the lead, and takes the stage seventh in the line-up. The Sunday February 1 semi-finals at the Queen’s Park Savannah in Port-of-Spain is one of the most anticipated events in Trinidad and Tobago’s annual National Panorama season. Both the North and Grand Stands are generally filled to capacity. The medium category semi-finals precedes the large bands in the musical showcase and features sixteen steel orchestras.
