Panorama Rethink

London - September 30, 2004

On Tuesday, 21 September there was a meeting to discuss the possibility of changing the results, and the winner itself, of this year’s Panorama. It appears that one of the judges made mistakes when totaling his scores at the end of the night, and as the mistakes were not spotted by the adjudicator they then contributed to the overall points for the contestants. There was no suggestion of corruption Ebony Steel Band - Notting Hill Carnival 2004

Sleeping Judges - When Less Is More...

New York - September 26,  2004
When Steel Talks Exclusive Guest Writer

By Winifred Lu

I recently saw a picture of a judge sleeping at the 2004 NY panorama and thought to myself "that poor tortured soul."  Is it really his fault?  Should he blamed for lacking the capacity to stay awake through the performances of thirteen (13) bands in one night?  Assuming the individual took his judging duties seriously, in whatever capacity he was operating that night, it may be time to reconsider the current structure for panorama judging in New York.  Moreover, panyard judging and some sort of preliminary system to reduce the number of bands performing on panorama night are seriously needed.

Pan Prodigy

By Donna Pierre

She’s only ten and already she’s met a duke and a king. Keisha Codrington is a pan prodigy who has won many awards and titles. In March of this year she performed for Britain’s Prince Andrew at the Hilton, and later, in August, she accompanied Sparrow on stage during his 50th anniversary celebrations at the Queen’s Hall. Chatting for a few minutes before her bedtime on a school night, Keisha said she loved playing the pan.

She said she’s been playing the pan since age three.

How did she get started?

She said this was a question for her father, Cary, to answer.

Keisha simply knows that she enjoys all her performances.

Just last month she won the soloist category in the World Steelband Music Festival. She was excited when the results were announced and she emerged the victor. As if remembering the excitement of that night, Keisha blurted out, “and we came second in the duet and we came first in the quartet.”

Important players in steel pan music
Web Posted - Tue Sep 14 2004
Barbados Advocate
By Allison Ramsay

Lord Kitchener, Robert Greenidge and The Renegades Steel Orche-stra are just three of many important players in the history of steel pan music. Lord Kitchener has been identified as the greatest composer of tunes for the steel pan. Greenidge is considered to be the most successful pan soloist while the Renegades Steel Orchestra is one of the oldest surviving bands in steel pan history.

Many of Kitchener’s compositions have won Panorama titles in Trinidad. At least eleven of his tunes were winners. It all started in 1964 with “Mama, Dis is Mas”. His songs came to life again in 1967 with the tune entitled “67.” From that year, his compositions were consecutive winners until 1976 with titles such as “The Bull”, “Margie” and “Tribute to Spree Simon”

J'Ouvert 2004 New York Panmen Reign Supreme

J'Ouvert 2004 was easily one of the best  moments for the pan fraternity as New York panmen and pan women dominated the scene. The music was solely steelpan music, and the hundreds of thousands of J'Ouvert revellers stretched as far back as the eye could see.  Indeed the iron and steel musicians reigned supreme.

Sonatas Under NYPD Curfew

by When Steel Talks

Here we go again.

With less than three days to go before the grand event - New York's 2004 Panorama- one of the oldest and most respected members of the NY pan fraternity is again being forced to shut down its practice in the early evening.   The members of Sonatas are outraged at what they see as insensitivity and total disrespect to their community and culture.  Ironically, Sonatas has been practicing in the same spot for over 25 years - a quarter of a century.

The band, made up primarily of young people who have dedicated their whole summer towards preparing for their presentation at the New York panorama this Saturday, view this treatment as grossly unfair.

Popular Steely Pan performs Friday

As a musical group, the Steely Pan Steel Band is one of the most celebrated in the Southeast. The annual concert event, held at Appalachian State University, routinely sells out, bringing in an audience of thousands made up of students and non-students alike.

The Steely Pan Steel Band is set to play tomorrow night at Farthing Auditorium at 8 p.m. Admission is $5 for ASU students and $8 for the general public.

“It is, hands down, the most popular and sought-after group in the school,” said Dr. William G. Harbinson, dean of the Hayes School of Music. “They don’t just perform, they really entertain, and they are totally self-supported.”

The truth is that the drums make the sounds all by themselves, with a little help from the band."

FEST OR FAMINE

By PATRICK GALLAHUE
September 20, 2004 -- The West Indian Day Parade in Brooklyn needs a management shake-up — and could be forced to make some major changes to keep it afloat, The Post has learned.

The parade is struggling to acquire "adequate corporate support for its sustainability and growth," a recent state-funded report said.

And facing increasing competition from other cities, the study recommended the organizing committee — known as the West Indian Day Carnival Association — "outsource" some events and mix corporate figures into its leadership.

Two years ago I had the pleasure of writing about my experience rehearsing for and winning T&T Panorama with Trinidad All Stars. This year I have the pleasure of writing about rehearsing for and winning Brooklyn Panorama with Pan Sonatas. Though the end result was the same--a Panorama crown--the paths I took to get there and the effect the experiences had on me were very different.

The Sonatas Steel Orchestra is the 2004 New York Panorama Champion, having wrested the title from last year's winner, Pantonic Steel Orchestra, which failed to even place this time around. Performing DeFosto's, "War 2004" as arranged for the band by Johann Popplewell, the Sonatas Steel Orchestra literally brought the house down as it had the several thousand patrons jumping mad screaming throughout its presentation at the Brooklyn Museum Grounds at the weekend.
