Destination
Philadelphia:
Caribbean Youth Panoramics
perform at Mann Center
1000's of Youth Introduced to the Steelpan at
Music Concert
Philadelphia -
All of a sudden there was the sound of
the pitter-patter of quickly moving feet. Not one or two - but
thousands of them.
And then came the
unmistakeable buzz of young human voices in the distance, getting louder and
louder. They just kept coming in droves. Wave after
wave they came, dressed in their colours and camp slogans. Yellow,
red, blue, green, orange t-shits to name a few filled the ground level seats to capacity
in minutes.
Little people everywhere. Thousands of little people. And then they entered up in the
balcony, hundreds more. And then they filtered into the
lawn seats. Children of all races and backgrounds piled into the
14, 000-seat capacity Mann Center for the Performing Arts. They
were all here to experience
Brazilian and Caribbean culture by way of Capoeira and the steelpan instrument as part of the 2006 Young People's
Concert Series.

Caribbean Youth Panoramics:
The Odyssey
Philadelphia -
The odyssey had lasted almost twenty-four hours to the minute. It had been
3:45 on Tuesday afternoon when the large luxury bus pulled away from the
curbside spot it had occupied while instruments were loaded, and musicians
boarded, for the journey to Philadelphia. And it was just about ten
minutes shy of 3:45 on Wednesday afternoon, when the driver safely brought his
charges, Caribbean Youth Panoramics (CYP) steel orchestra
(right) and
When Steel Talks press personnel, back to the
Clarkson Avenue address in Brooklyn, New York which served as CYP's practice
space for 2005.

PanKids
Germany
-
The spotlight falls this time around on some pan-playing youth in
Germany.
Known as the PanKids, they are one of the youngest pan
ensembles in the country who can trace their beginnings to a summer
course begun back in 1999. The enthusiasm displayed by the youths
allowed for the growth of the band in terms of instruments and
membership, and also in public appearances. Their repertoire is
varied and includes a mix of familiar songs and youth-oriented
favorites.

Young Steelband Musicians Deliver
CASYM's musical program showcases budding talents
New York
-
Well the CASYM school concert went above
and beyond the call of duty by showcasing every single student who had
participated in the concert.
All the special attention was something
I’ve never witnessed at a children’s concert, so it was a bit of a
surprise to see so much time given to each child. Every single
performers name was announced before their opening number, producing
cheers of approval from proud parents and friends in the audience.

With a
beautiful summer Saturday in the forecast - Utopia Pan Soul: the Next Generation organized and held their first

music. The culinary fare included curried chicken, shrimp,

Legend Hugh Borde and Many
Others Come Together to Pay Tribute to Pan in Michigan
Detroit, Michigan - The
weather in Detroit on June 17th was absolutely tropical,
with
cloudless skies, high humidity and temperatures reaching into the
90s - the perfect setting for the first annual Michigan Steel Drum
Festival. High atop the roof of Hockeytown Café on Woodward Avenue,
history was made as pannist Hugh Borde and many others heated up an
already broiling rooftop with 14 fantastic hours of steel pan music.
Although the steel drum has been played in Michigan since Hugh Borde
first performed at a Mackinac Island conference in 1964, the 2006
Michigan Steel Drum Festival was the first time that an entire
festival of steel drum music had ever taken place in Michigan.
According to Michael Kernahan, one of the other early pioneers of
steel drum music, "The festival was the greatest thing to ever
happen to pan in Michigan."

The Stars Came Out -
And They Did Shine
Brooklyn, New
York
-
The most
important thing to note is that they were here. Yes,
Trinidad
All Stars steel orchestra was actually in New York. Rumors had been
flying around that they were not the 'real Trinidad All Stars;' some
said it was really 'New York All Stars' that had been around for
previous years, but had not been heard from in a while; others said
that they were just pan players masquerading under the All Stars
banner. And when it became undeniable that it really was All Stars,
complete with manager Berry Hunte in tow, the rumors were revised to
'it's really a "small" side' that came up to New York. It was first
at KC's Hideaway - Trinidad All Stars and CASYM steel orchestra.

Footballs, pansticks and
politics
Trinidad -
Playing football and playing pan have
much in common. They are labour intensive, attractive to young
people and impart an appreciation for teamwork and discipline.
Moreover, there seems to be a natural aptitude for these pursuits
amongst young citizens of Trinidad and Tobago. However, successive
governments since Independence have done nothing to nurture these
talents, or to place these pursuits in the framework or forefront of
any social development policy.
