Only four steelbands for Panorama
“With
or without a full complement of the bands, there will be a Panorama,
on the night of Thursday, August 3.”
That’s the view of Carnival Development Committee (CDC) Chairman
Neil Cochrane, who issued a statement yesterday on a number of
matters, including a dispute over the decision for steelbands to be
judged according to their presentation of a single test piece at
this year’s Panorama competition.

for about two and a half hours, the spotlight belonged to the next
generation of budding musicians, with the steelband as their
instrument of choice. For the evening, these excited youngsters
would display music and skills they learned and honed in the CASYM
spear-headed steelpan music education programs they had each been a
part of in their respective schools.

Michigan Steel Drum Festival
Detroit - On June
17th, the city of Detroit will play host to the first-ever Michigan
Steel Drum Festival, the only Michigan festival to focus entirely on
the breadth of music composed for steel drums.
The instrument
was first introduced and popularized in the state of Michigan by the
Trinidad Tripoli Steelband in 1973. Numerous community
organizations, high schools, universities, and professional
ensembles throughout the state have since taken up the steel drum.
The Michigan Steel Drum Festival will feature a total of eight
Michigan-based steelbands. These groups will perform a wide variety
of music on an amazing range of 55-gallon steel drums—including the
rumbling six-drum bass pans, the powerful triple cello pans, the
resounding double guitar pans, the lyrical double second pans, and
the clarion single tenor pan.

Stabroek News |
Most of us were given no clue
about a proposal for an anthem
A regional anthem must surely
reflect our shared Caribbean-ness with a naturalness, grace and ease
of language. Our literature already does this, thanks to our great
Caribbean writers. Since our great, universally popular musical
artists (Bob Marley and David Rudder immediately spring to mind)
have already composed music and words that inspire and move us as
Caribbean people (e.g. 'Redemption Song' , 'Rally 'round the West
Indies') why can't we adapt/adopt such fine works to produce a
Regional anthem, by general consensus rather than by decree ? To
say, as some of us do, that it's 'too difficult' to organize a
consensus, or as Mr Ross is reported saying to the BBC: putting the
anthem up for competition "would have probably resulted in a hybrid
of reggae, pan, zouk and soca." (Please notice the implied dismissal
of 'hybrid' music as a bad thing, not 'classical' enough for an
anthem) would be to miss the point. We are a hybrid people, Mr Ross,
and that's one of our strengths. Ask the Caricom cultural desk.

CDC unmoved on panorama
format
by Andy Liburd
Antigua - CDC
Chairman Neil Cochrane is holding strong to the CDC’s position that
the 2006 Panorama Competition would be based on a single-song
format.
Former president of the Pan Association Leon
“Kuma” Rodney came out strongly against the idea stating, “Imagine
you have paid your money to go out to Carnival City for panorama and
all the bands are playing a song from the same melody. I am saying
that cannot be good for the development of the art form.”
But Cochrane, at a CDC press conference
yesterday, took an indirect shot at Rodney in his response to
questions from the Antigua Sun about the change in format, by
claiming that a story in Tuesday’s issue was reflecting a biased
perspective.

Steelbands need to stand on their own
Antigua - All the problems the
steelband movement is having today have been caused by those in
authority.
The real problem is that the executive members don’t have the time
to nursemaid the association. Notice you only hear of an association
when it gets close to carnival and by doing this they turn
themselves in a welfare association. Check them out and you will
find that they all have other jobs. Added to that, they are also
executives in their band, probably section leaders and also part of
some community group and most of them are supervisors where they
work.

Steelpan In Transition
New York -
Indeed,
there are many who claim to be able to arrange music for the
steelpan family of music instruments. And from a clinical standpoint,
they probably can. However, the master steelband music
arranger is one that tells the story of the panman, explicitly
through his musical creations which are anchored in tradition,
culture and rhythms that go back thousands of years and connect
implicitly with the soul and spirit of the original drummers and
their descendants. Master arranger Clive Bradley was indeed
one of these individuals who walked with the gods.
