Unheard Voices
The Rise of Steelband and Calypso in the
Caribbean and North America
A. Myrna Nurse
Originating in the 1930s, the steelband
(a.k.a. steelpan) movement began in the
Caribbean, was transplanted to and grew in
North America, and has transcended the
boundaries of class, race, and gender. Based
on a compilation of narratives from Caribbean
and American members of the steelband
movement, Unheard Voices: The Rise of
Steelband and Calypso in the Caribbean and
North America traces the history of this
unique percussion invention of the twentieth
century.

The 2007
Panorama Championship Title is His
- and Trinidad All Stars
Arranger Leon 'Smooth' Edwards, One Day After
Trinidad
-
When Steel Talks spoke with a quietly delighted Leon
'Smooth' Edwards, winning arranger for the prestigious 2007 Trinidad and Tobago
National Panorama Championship on the Sunday after the competition.
Trinidad All Stars Steel Orchestra's execution of his arrangement of De Fosto's
Pan Lamentation earned the orchestra the ultimate title of panorama
champions - in addition to a
one-million dollar (TT) prize purse, simultaneously
denying the defending champions Phase II Pan Groove their much-desired hat
trick.

Hat Trick Eludes Len 'Boogsie' Sharpe
and Phase II Pan Groove
Trinidad
& Tobago Steelband Panorama 2007
Trinidad
- Len 'Boogsie' Sharpe and Leon 'Smooth' Edwards
definitely have one thing in common, post-panorama - their concern for the young
players in their bands. In the case of Boogsie Sharpe, the bitter taste of
the loss of the 2007 Panorama championship manifested in the despair of his
Phase II Pan Groove musicians, particularly the young. Chalking up 286.5
points to Trinidad All Stars' 288.5 in the final round of competition, it was a
crushing blow to the Woodbrook - based band when Leon 'Smooth' Edwards and
Trinidad All Stars went home with the championship, and Phase II had to settle
for second place. This was also the first time in
many years that an
aggregate system of judging was implemented where the scores of all three judges
were taken into account. In recent years, a bank of judges was
selected, and the highest and lowest scores discarded, with the remaining tally as the
official result.

arrangements, Weekes and his crew took charge of the timely arrival of
participating bands and the efficient transition from band to band throughout the evening at Skinner Park

Jamar Technologies Star
Trinidad
& Tobago Steelband Panorama 2007
Trinidad
-
It
has only been a few years since
When Steel Talks
jolted the media fraternity and people around the globe
when we utilized the latest technologies to publish the
panorama finals scores for the world, with accompanying
pictures and full stories - before many of the panorama
attendees had even begun to leave the Savannah. We even took the then-veteran
Trinidadian entertainment editor Terry Joseph by utter
surprise, and he remarked in one of his columns 'how
shocked he was after getting home from the Savannah' to
find full coverage, with audio clips, pictures and
articles awaiting him on the internet. That simple
move changed the concept of time in which the world has
become accustomed to having the
results available after the panorama competition. Of course,
now wireless internet access is commonplace even at the
Savannah, and we were occasionally able to publish live from the event
a couple of years later.

National Steelband Panorama 2007 Finals - What They Won
Trinidad
& Tobago Steelband Panorama 2007
Trinidad
-
Each year, there are gripes in the
steelband community, both in Trinidad and Tobago and
abroad, about the prize monies for their
respective steelband competitions. This year was no
different, and the customary loud grumbles found themselves
immortalized in song, via Winston
Scarborough's (aka calypsonian D Original de Fosto) 'Pan Lamentation.' The song was a popular one
for the 2007 Panorama season, with fourteen orchestras
in the conventional categories opting to take it to the
competition arena. The selection essentially
served as an indictment on behalf of the pan community,
and decries the lack of respect meted out to the pan people.
Among the grouses documented in de Fosto's ditty, are
what have been widely-perceived by many as the 'paltry
prize monies' up for grabs in the annual competition.
In one of his performances, De Fosto called for "one
million, five [hundred thousand]" TT dollars for the first prize.

Trinidad All Stars
Win 2007 Panorama Title
Sound Specialists of
Laventille Crowned Medium Champs
First
Ever in South - One Million TT First Prize
Trinidad & Tobago
Trinidad
& Tobago Steelband Panorama 2007
Trinidad
- Trinidad All Stars captures steelpan music's most prestigious title / Champions of the Trinidad and Tobago National Panorama Large band category
In a hotly contested contest, Trinidad All Stars bested defending champions
Phase II Pan Groove by two points - 288.5 to the latter's 286.5. The 2007
panorama champs played De Fosto's Pan
Lamentation as their tune of choice, while Phase II used their arranger Len
'Boogsie' Sharpe's original composition Sharing Licks. This event was historic on many
levels; it was the first panorama held outside of the traditional venue of Queen's
Park Savannah in Port-of -Spain - Skinner Park in San Fernando, south
Trinidad. Additionally, the first prize payout was one
million TT (USD 159K) to the winning band. Total prize monies for the 2007
Panorama season will be in the millions of dollars tt when all summed up.
In the medium category, Sound Specialists of Laventille came from behind to
secure that division's first place position with a score of 279. Favored
Tobago-based band Dixieland who led the pack going into the finals, had to be
satisfied with, what had to be for them, a disappointing fourth place. Defending champions
Sforzata were prevented from scoring a hat trick with a 2007 win, and finished
in third place overall.

Len 'Boogsie' Sharpe on
Phase II Pan Groove and Dixieland Steel Orchestra - seeks
championship in both categories
Trinidad
& Tobago Steelband Panorama 2007
Trinidad
-
For 2007, champion steelband arranger Len 'Boogsie' Sharpe
says that he has a 'good feeling' about the final competition coming up on
Saturday February 17 at Skinner Park, San Fernando. Like that historic
occasion in the making, Boogsie himself is looking not only to score the elusive
hat trick in the large steel orchestra category with Phase II Pan Groove, but
also to becoming the only arranger to do so with his own compositions. The
2005 and 2006 panorama-winning arranger pointed out that though mega orchestra
Renegades is the only one to date to cop three consecutive panorama wins, they were not all accomplished
with the selections written by their arranger - Dr. Jit Samaroo.

The “First and Ten” Steel Band, currently taught by
Vanderbilt instructor
Mat Britain
is one of four steel bands ranging in skill level and
experience from beginning to advanced . “When I first
started teaching at the
Blair School of Music
I was approached by one football player who wanted to
take steel pan lessons to fulfill an Arts credit”,
explains Britain. “He obviously enjoyed the class and
told some teammates because each semester the enrollment
has increased to the point of having an entire steel
band made up of Vandy football players.” The band is
obviously a hit with these student athletes as
linebacker Brandon Bryant explains, “I enjoy playing pan
a lot. It’s kind of a release and lets you blow off some
steam and you are having fun.” The class seems to be
just as fun for the instructor as well, “I must admit
that I was a bit hesitant about teaching football
players how to play steel pan, but I truly have a blast
with these guys and look forward to each class”.

Steelband Panorama 2007
Trinidad
-
When Steel Talks
chatted with Exodus' arranger Pelham Goddard, who
happily said that "Things [are] going very, very, very, very good!" Goddard was
remembering last year and the atmosphere then, when they were behind the ball.
But 2007 is definitely looking so much better. Asked about the band's
performance in the semi-finals concluded one week ago in Port of Spain, Goddard
thought it was good - all things considered. The entire one-hundred
piece orchestra, complete with players, had been gathered at the savannah in a
state of readiness since 5:00 PM Sunday afternoon - for rehearsals, and their
turn on stage, which eventually came only at 2:00 AM the next [Monday] morning.
At that point, some players were groggy with sleep, others had to be found, etc.
"The fact that we could keep the band together, that alone is a win!" declared
Pelham.

It became quite obvious that lady luck is
favouring the Carib Dixieland Steel Orchestra this year
when the top national Panorama finalist in the medium
bands catergory copped the Tobago House of Assembly (THA)
Pan Champs crown early yesterday morning.
Dixieland’s rendition of The Original De Fosto’s “Pan

worth all of the 266 points that won the band the title
and proved that it is no one-hit wonder which simply
managed to create history as the first Tobago band to
lead going into a national Panorama final.

Trinidad
- When the dust cleared after the semi-final phase of
the national panorama competition,
figuratively speaking, in the medium and large conventional
steel orchestra category, the biggest surprise - or perhaps 'shock' would be a
better word - for many, was the non-inclusion of southern powerhouse Skiffle
Bunch steel orchestra among the final eight large bands to vie for championship
glory on February 17. Not only is what appeared to be the 'sure shot'
orchestra (going by their performance, and general consensus) out of the
running and generating furious debate within the global steelpan community, but
the people of Trinidad and Tobago's second largest city from where Skiffle Bunch
hails - San Fernando - "are hurting very, very badly" says the orchestra's
captain and city Alderman, Junia Regrello while speaking with

outside of the finals arena.

world-renowned south steel orchestra Skiffle Bunch "a disappointment to
all of us, particularly to all the South people. It's not compulsory for
us to have a south band in the finals. However we thought the performance
of Skiffle Bunch during the semi-finals really warranted them a place in the
finals. It was a disappointment to all southerners, particularly the
people of the city of San Fernando." He added that it would have made good
business sense to have a south band in the finals, and that it was the concern
of many, that by merit and based solely on the orchestra's performance, "Skiffle
Bunch should have been included in the finals."

A LIFE OF PAN
Trinidad - Arddin
Herbert’s foray into steel pan music began at the age of nine
when, one Jouvert morning, his father Clyde took him to hear
Trintoc Invaders Steel Orchestra.
The visit was
the result of his mother Lenora’s complaints. Herbert had
discovered the joys of percussion and had been constantly banging
on empty milk tins for weeks.
“My mother
couldn’t take the noise anymore so she told my father to do
something about it,” said Herbert. “Dad asked me if I wanted to
play pan. Of course I had no idea what that was but it sounded as
if it was similar to what I was already doing so I said yes.” That
was when his father took him to hear Invaders play. That same
year, 1979, Herbert’s father took him back to the Invaders panyard
where he was taught to play the steel pan.

Shocker - no south Bands for finals Large Category

Phase II Pan Groove |
Well - so much happened on the
interim stage erected at the south-western end of the Queen's
Park Savannah in Port-of-Spain. There was so much
pan, so much great music. It was a long day, and
night into morning. The semi-final rounds reigned
for about seventeen hours straight at the savannah
featuring the small, medium and large steel orchestra
categories. The musicians all came out to 'lick
up' their competition. In the end,
Merrytones from Diego Martin, and
Dixieland hailing from the sister isle of Tobago set the
standards by which the other orchestras in their categories
would be up against going into the national panorama finals.

jigs of joy as two of their orchestras make it into the
final round of the medium band category in the 2007

positions up for grabs tonight in the semi-finals which
took place at the south-western end of the Queen's
Park Savannah in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad.
Katzenjammers occupied fourth place with 269 points,
while Dixieland fended off all thirteen of their fellow

Message From the
President of Pan Trinbago
Dear Pan Lovers,
As you are aware, this Sunday's National Panorama
semi-final for all three categories of conventional
orchestras will be conducted in an environment
somewhat different to the traditional configuration
and, consequently, will present some challenges to
both the administration and our audience.
The event, which begins at 9 am at the Queen's Park
Savannah in Port-of-Spain will, for the first time
since inception in 1963, take place at a venue
different from the traditional setting.
Adapting to the new venue itself has presented a
raft of difficulties and we have applied the finest
available minds to pre-empting problems but, as with
any new experience, there may well be a few
situations we could not predict; even after
meticulously analyzing possibilities from every
angle.

- 2005 was a year marked by historic highs and tragic lows for the
Pan community. On panorama night, the late great Clive Bradley
made history by achieving a feat never before accomplished. The
bands for which he arranged placed first and second. Sadly, the
joy would later turn to grief with the tragic news of his passing
less than three months later.

Bradley Time
Is Panorama
Time
A Musical
Analysis of the Great One
The
late great master arranger Clive Bradley was the
world's greatest steelband music composer/arranger.
The
upcoming Trinidad and Tobago steelband music
panorama competition will mark the second consecutive
time the event will take place without the grand presence of the
master musician. Panorama time was Bradley's
time, more so than any other time of the year.
Bradley's larger-than-life-figure and all-world
talent simply dominated every aspect and component
of the event. Win or lose, it was always about
Bradley. He was and will continue to be, the
measuring stick by which others will be judged for some
time to come.
Bradley's music and life are required listening,
viewing and studying whether you are into music or
not. In this regard
When Steel
Talks
will revisit an
analysis of one of the musical works of Clive Bradley,
by another great mind out of the Caribbean,
keyboardist extraordinaire Frankie McIntosh.
Mr. McIntosh is also one of the finest musicians ever
to emanate from the Caribbean.
