New Haven
Independent
Agents Thwart
"Terrorist" Threat
New
Haven:
Meet New Haven's post-9/11
national security threat: Debby Teason. She tried to bring a
truckload of steel drums across the Canadian border for a local
church and school. Border agents put a stop to that.
Teason traveled to Toronto earlier this month with a rented
U-Haul. She hoped to transport $8,000 worth of new "pans" for
the band she directs at St. Luke's Church and for another band
she's helping to launch at Cold Spring School. click

Southern
Marines Steel Orchestra
In the Spotlight
Trinidad
- The Southern Marines Steel Orchestra is the oldest
existing band in the Greater San Fernando area. The
band’s longevity is testimony to the unbreakable bond
between the band and its base – the community of
Marabella.
In the early days, Southern Marines became famous for
its sweet music, scintillating bass lines, its mas
portrayals and its loyal and steadfast supporters. Southern
Marines, under its legendary captain, Milton “Squeezer”
Lyons, himself a national ping pong solo champion, won
the first Panorama competition in 1963 at the Naparima
Bowl. Today, Marines is known as one of the best beating
steelbands on the road for carnival and has revived an
early steelband tradition in that its captain, Malomo
Joseph, is also its music arranger and tuner.

Marabella's Southern Marines Steelband Foundation promotes
Talent Expression for the
Seventh Year
Trinidad
- The auditions of the Talent
Expression competition, produced by the Southern Marines
Steelband Foundation came to an end on Sunday 21st
October 2007. Forty-two contestants have been chosen to
participate in the preliminaries to be held on Saturday 27th
and Sunday 28th October at the Southern Marines Pan
Palais, Southern Main Road, Marabella, beginning at 7:00 pm.
Talent Expression is
a performance talent competition organised by the Southern
Marines Steelband Foundation since 2001. It is not
restricted to Pan, but encompasses all performance art e.g.
instrumental, vocal, dance, monologue, poetry etc. This
format was decided upon because Southern Marines views its
mission in the broadest sense as one of youth and community
empowerment and development - through Pan, both as instrument
and as movement of the people - and the Arts as a whole

Steel
Orchestra Captivates Chile
Pepper Fiesta
New
York - Every year the Brooklyn
Botanic Garden is the host for the annual Chile Pepper Fiesta
Festival. In addition, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden is the
home of a world-class botany collection. The 15-year old
festival has grown in popularity and stature, and is now one
of Brooklyn, New York's Fall season's
mainstay events, showcasing diverse talent
in music, dance, film, and of course, spicy culinary morsels.
This year the show opened up with the
sounds of the captivating steeldrum music instrument.
Sesame Flyers Steel Orchestra inundated the large Sunday
afternoon audience with a varied music set that highlighted the
group's musical versatility and talent. The diverse crowd
is a typical representation of Brooklyn's 'city' mixture and
its burgeoning support and craving for the arts.

Amrit and Crazy dropping
"Heat" for 2008
In 2007 Amrit Samaroo
and veteran writer, producer and performing artist
Crazy came together and produced the steelband music
hit Band From Space. It was one of
steelband music's most played songs ever. There
was scarcely a steel orchestra that did not play "Band
From Space" either as their panorama selection, or as
part of their stage side music set.
Amrit and Crazy have
teamed up again to produce what they expect, to be an
equally successful piece for 2008, "Heat". Also, featured in
this music track is steelpan performing artist
extraordinaire Duvone Stewart.

UK Pan Pioneer, Frank Rollock
Celebrates his 70TH
Birthday
United
Kingdom - In 1956,
at the age of seventeen, Frank and his brother Roy founded their own
orchestra called Modernaires for whom Frank compiled a book of
arrangements through the inspiration of the famous Trinidad All Stars
whom he greatly admired.
In 1959, whilst preparing
for a steel band music festival with Merry Stars Metronomes whose leader
Kenrick Thomas later became his brother-in-law, Frank made a conscious
decision to migrate to the UK. He brought some pans with him and in
February 1960, Frank, Roy and some friends took to the streets of
Brixton to celebrate Carnival. Their actions were noted as the first
time pan was played in Brixton Road and the initiation of the Brixton
Carnival. Frank remembers his fellow West Indians joining in with their
bottles and spoons and the amazed look on the faces of Britons. In the
late sixties he played the sax with the Tony Morgan Road Show and the
bass guitar with Rudy Jones and the Ambassadors, they toured Germany and
played at most of the clubs in the West End around the same time the
Beatles were making their mark in the music industry.

An SOS for Caribbean
Culture
Global
- The misuse of
Calypso and Calypsonians is one glaring example. The trend in recent
years in the region has been to add an element of entertainment to
political campaigns and rallies. Unfortunately that trend has permeated
Carnivals and the Calypso competitions. It has meant therefore, the near
extinction of the artform as patrons are now staying away from the tents
and other Calypso shows in droves. Social commentary has evolved into
political commentary eliminating the cleverness and creativity of the
artform relegating it to nothing more than sophomoric diatribe which in
most cases insults the intelligence of the audience it is intended to
entertain.
Virginia - Williams,
originally from Trinidad,
has been playing and
building steel drums in
Hampton Roads for years.
Through the apprenticeship
program, he's been teaching
his craft to Earl Sawyer, a
steel drum musician from
Portsmouth.
"It's a culture," Williams
said, describing his art.
"In the Caribbean, in
Trinidad, the whole country
revolves around the steel
drum. It's a culture that's
really spreading. Steel drum
bands are in almost every
place in this country today.
It's new. And like anything
new, everybody wants to get
involved."
Williams said he's happy to
be sharing the understanding
of steel drums and their
music.

Croydon Guadian
Marlon speaks of his
‘family’ in the Comets
United
Kingdom - A
15-year-old steel drum
player has spoken about how
a police-backed community
scheme currently under
threat has turned his life
around.
Marlon
Hibbert joined the Comets
Community Project after he
was taken in by his foster
mum, Rose Bartlett - a long
standing supporter of the
scheme for many years.
The Croydon
Guardian reported last week
how the council was looking
at accomodation elsewhere
because of increasing
numbers of complaints from
neighbours.
However, the
Comets are furious and say
they are going nowhere after
spending £25,000 of their
own money to refurbish the
building, £5,000 of which
was a gift from the National
Lottery.

Antigua - Sir McLean
‘King Short Shirt’ Emanuel
will be saluted at the 2007

Leon Kuma
Rodney, organiser and
pioneer of the show, said
that plans are progressing
fairly well although there
are some technicalities that
need to be ironed out.
He was
confident though that come
Sunday, the day of the show,
everything will be ready for
a spectacular event.
Rodney told
the Antigua Sun that Short
Shirt was chosen to be
saluted based on what he
considers to be the artiste

general not only in the
entertainment arena of
Antigua and Barbuda, but
regionally and
internationally.

Tales From
Icebox Land
Queen Macoomeh
Canada
- Tales from
Icebox Land is a compilation
of short stories from the
hilarious and satiric pen of
Queen Macoomeh.
Nothing is safe from her ‘picong’.
Queen Macoomeh looks at life
in ‘Icebox Land’ – her
coined name for North
America – from the
perspective of a Caribbean
born person raised on the
continent. She talks about
Icebox Land’s politics,
child rearing, schooling,
carnivals and lifestyle in
her inimitable humor.
Tales From Icebox Land is
well over two dozen ‘ole
talk’ nuggets, written
almost entirely in the
parlance of the Caribbean.
“We English Sweeter” is a
side splitting, irreverent
poke at the difference
between story telling in
standard English and in ‘we
talk’. “The Whole and Entire
History of the Bacchanal
Bobol Brigade” is an account
of a fictitious carnival
committee in Icebox Land –
proof positive that Queen
Macoomeh’s tongue-in-cheek
is sublime. “Axis of
Bacchanal” is a must read,
double entendre on news
headlines of the day.

Harlem's
38th Annual
African American Day Parade
Where did the pan go?
New
York - The 2007 African American Day Parade in Harlem this past
September 16 unfolded under beautiful skies, with just a hint of
coolness in the air as a reminder of Autumn just around the corner. But
with colorful floats, energetic marching bands from within and outside
the New York area, multiple organizations, some with message-oriented
content, and historical representations, all parading by in front of
thousands of people lining both sides of the route from 112th Street
through 141st Street in Harlem - for yet another year there was a bold
spectacle and statement of the African American presence in Harlem, the 'black
capital' of the USA, and in the eyes of many, the world.

Trinidad Newsday
Chinese
steelband returns to the
frontlines
Trinidad - The idea
to form an all-Chinese
steelband to commemorate the
200th Year of Chinese
arrival in Trinidad and
Tobago came in early 2006
during the Carnival season.
After a
number of telephone calls in
the recruitment drive, the
band began taking shape and
on Sunday March 26, 2006 at
the Chinese Association, the
Chinese Bicentennial Steel
Ensemble was born with its
official “panyard” on the
association’s premises in St
Anns.
Discussions were held with
the Management of Excellent
Stores Silver Stars, PCS
Starlift, and Harvard Harps
Steel Orchestras to borrow
their surplus instruments as
the band had none of its
own. Musical arrangements
were provided by Roy
Edwards, Douglas “Dougie”
Redon, Gerard “Skies”
Abraham and Evelyn Hinds.
