The most recent CD from Ralph MacDonald is “Mixty
Motions.” It’s the masterful Ralph MacDonald
surrounded by fantastic musicians as well as
two new performances by the great duo, Ashford

releases, steelpan instruments played by Robert
Greenidge maintain a prominent role in defining
the attitude of the CD.

When Steel Talks
The Year 2008 In Pan A When Steel Talks
Review
2008
was an extremely interesting year for the steelpan music
instrument. Our When Steel Talks travels, coverage and
stories took our site visitors literally all over the globe.
We saw the emergence and coming of age of the youth movement
as two young and very talented arrangers (André White and
Khan Cordice) - both still in their teens - captured major
titles against stiff competition in the New York Panorama
and the Antigua & Barbuda Moods of Pan Festival ‘25-A-Side,’
respectively.
On the flip side, we lost noted Trinidad
journalist Terry Joseph, pan pioneers Oscar Pile in Trinidad
and Antigua’s Leroy “Jughead” Gordon. The untimely passing
of Trinidad and Tobago’s Desperadoes and New York’s D’Radoes
premiere bassist Frank “Crawl” Findley and former Phase II
captain Edme Gibbons - among others who also impacted on the
steelpan art form during their lifetimes - left us with a
giant void. click

History-Making
Steelband Arranger
André White - In the Spotlight
New
York, USA
- As 2009 comes into focus, for André White -
2008 has been that ‘year to remember.’ For this young
musician who set the steelband world on its ear, life will
never be the same. New York steelband panorama veteran
arrangers – some previous competition winners themselves -
had to respectfully duff their hats to André White in the
early hours of Sunday September 1 - when his arrangement of
Amrit Samaroo’s Heat as executed by his band, Long Island’s
one hundred-strong ADLIB Steel Orchestra, made them New York
Panorama champions for the first time ever, and by default
conferring upon him, the title of ‘champion arranger.’ But
the additional history-making element is André’s age. He was
a mere eighteen years old. click

CSI – overcoming the barriers
with steelband music!
United
Kingdom - Brent Holder, World Champion Soloist,
formed the Caribbean Steel International steelband in 2004,
after obtaining invaluable experience from working with some
of the top steel bands in the UK, Trinidad and Japan with
three members owing to the demand for small gigging bands.
After ensuring that their small steel band was well
established on the gigging circuit, CSI founding members
decided to start a community group which would involve their
local communities in the steel pan art form.
....CSI felt classes would be especially beneficial to those
who are disabled, socially excluded and an advantage for the
youths in the borough as it would keep them off the streets
and teach them a culture they may not already know about,
also giving them the opportunity to enhance their teamwork
skills and take pride in themselves and what they can
achieve. click

Panorama split-up — Three
separate semi-finals
Trinidad, W.I.
- Pan lovers organising a big lime for the Panorama
semi-finals at the Queen’s Park Savannah next year may have to
rethink their plans after Pan Trinbago made the decision on Monday
evening to hold three separate semi- finals to accommodate small,
medium and large bands in south Trinidad and Tobago.
President of the pan body, Patrick Arnold, said several major
decisions were made by members of Pan Trinbago at Monday’s meeting,
including the days on which shows will take place, a change in the
number of band members in each category, and the final decision on
the venue for the Panorama finals.
Two weeks before the finals in Queen’s Park Savannah on Carnival
Saturday (February 21), semi-finals will be held, one on Friday
(Feb. 6) at the Dwight Yorke Stadium in Tobago; one on Saturday (Feb
7) at Skinner Park in San Fernando and the last one on Sunday (Feb
8) at the Queen’s Park Savannah.

New Year's tradition revived in
tribute to fallen icons
St. John’s, Antigua & Barbuda, W.I.
- The Antigua and Barbuda Mas’ Association in collaboration
with the Steel Band Association will be seeking to bring back
tradition by honouring two cultural icons with a street parade
through St. John’s tomorrow.
Both associations will be bringing back the New Year’s Day tradition
while at the same time remembering
Leroy “Jughead” Gordon and Keva
Margetson, who passed away a week apart in November.
Speaking to the Antigua Sun, member of the mas’ Association and one
of the organisers for the event, Colin “Wanga” Martin, said both
Margetson and Gordon, a founding member of the mas’ association,
contributed significantly to the development of mas’ in the country

Panmen meet today on Panorama changes
Trinidad, W.I. -
Steelband leaders are expected to decide today whether to
accept or reject a package of proposals which calls for new
variations in the staging of next year’s Panorama
competition. Panmen spent the Christmas holidays perusing an
official document from Pan Trinbago which seeks to effect
radical changes in the production of the popular Carnival
show. Pan Trinbago wants new arrangements for the finals of
the small and medium orchestra categories. The pan body is
recommending that the medium band final be detached from the
large category and instead be merged with that of the small
orchestras.

Dudley, Steelpan Innovator, Scores Again
Trinidad, W.I. - Make me another “Voom Box.” Such were the
words of Len “Boogsie” Sharpe when he realized the effect and
potential of the new invention from UK-based inventor, Dudley
Dickson, when the instrument which houses the Sonic Bass, was tested
with National Panorama Champions, Phase II Pan Groove at C2K8
(Carnival 2008).
The acoustic Voom Box is made of plywood and is
somewhat like a speaker box since it amplifies the sound of the pan,
in this case the seven-bass. An excited Boogsie believes that
another voom box would strike a better balance to the sound of the
band.

The Musical Apostles steel band makes debut
Jamaica, W.I.
- The Kingston Parish Church is the most recent
convert to the growing number of Jamaican
churches with steel bands. The Musical Apostles
was formed in September, and last Sunday was
ceremonially dedicated to the church by the new
rector, Bishop Don Taylor. He declared that
having the band is "a joy".
The band was the brainchild of Rev Jim Parks,
until recently the assistant priest at Kingston
Parish Church. The 14-member band is composed of
five boys and nine girls from Kingston Parish
Church and Christ Church Vineyard Town, and
officially belongs to both churches.
Its leader, Gay Magnus, is "probably the most
qualified" steel panist in Jamaica, according to
her assistant, Dwight McBean, an organist at the
Kingston Parish Church. He told The Sunday
Gleaner that the band desperately needs more
pans.

of stemming the violent turbulence in Laventille

Trinidad,
W.I. - Since
it’s unveiling more than a year ago, the G-pan (Genesis
Pan) has had no shortage of detractors and controversy.
In an exclusive interview with When Steel Talks,
Parliamentary Secretary Junia Regrello attempts
to set the record straight on the purpose, expectations
and realities of this instrument as it relates to
the nation of Trinidad and Tobago, the government,
and the overall Trinidad and Tobago steelpan music
fraternity.
Ultimately, according
to Mr. Regrello, “this is about the protection of
the instrument, and for the people of Trinidad and
Tobago.” He also emphatically states that the objective
is not to replace the traditional steelpan instruments
with the G-pan. They are of the opinion that the
G-pan can harmoniously co-exist with the traditional
steelpan. In addition, the rumors that the purpose
of the G-Pan is to ‘reduce the number of players’
- is nothing more than ‘propaganda’ that has no
basis in reality, Regrello affirms.

a smiling, fetching look, freshness, glowing youth,
silent tension until the music rose out of the sweet
combination of supple, youthful, now swaying bodies
and hands molded to the pan sticks which drew the
lilting music out of the pans, the semi darkness
in which they were playing pitiable because such
accomplishment should not be hidden in poor light,
and yet the darkness adding the sweet-edge atmosphere
of romance.
This
was the scene at the Jean Pierre Complex last Sunday
on the occasion of the finals of Pan Is Beautiful
XI where eight steel orchestras played classical
music or local compositions in classical mode.

Bringing island flavors to holiday
Rochester,
New York - The moment Alfred
St. John enters a room, he makes his presence known.
“Greetings, salutations,” he booms.
“You can call me Saint,” — that’s for the St. John
— he says, and offers his hand.
St. John, a Trinidad and Tobago native, is preparing
for the release of his fourth full length CD.
He and his 13-member
group, Alfred St. John’s Trinidad and Tobago Steelband,
have been recording this CD for more than 10 years.
During that time, band member Richard Smith died,
in 2001.

Five Alive Showdown
at the Deanery Grounds
Moods of Pan 2008
Antigua
& Barbuda, W.I. - It was billed
as the steelpan battle of ages. The night of the
long anticipated face-off between the titans of
the Five Alive - a ‘five-a-side steelband competition’
format was finally here, Antigua & Barbuda’s Musical
Youth versus Trinidad & Tobago’s Golden Hands -
themselves fully expecting to go up against seven
other equally-determined aggregations of five musicians
- all with the intent of not allowing either of
those two “titans” to leave with the prize purse.

Moods of Pan 2008
Antigua
& Barbuda, W.I. - The first
edition of the Cool & Smooth ‘25-A-Side’ is now
history but the future ramifications of this successful
steelpan musical venture will have a lasting impact
on the global steelband music fraternity, community
and business of pan for years to come. A seismic-shift
in the future of pan in Antigua & Barbuda and the
Caribbean region with far-reaching global ramifications
- not so quietly took place here tonight. When Steel
Talks saw it, felt it and tasted it up close and
personal.

Pan in the dark
Arnold apologises to patrons...
Trinidad
& Tobago, W.I. - In his opening
remarks at the Trinidad and Tobago National Steelband
Music Festival Pan is Beautiful XI, Pan Trinbago
president Patrick Arnold apologised to the audience
for the inconvenience of staging the festival at
the Jean Pierre Complex.
"After all these years, we are still at the Jean
Pierre Complex and this place is not suited for
a steelband festival," he said.
But Arnold's apology did not make up for the level
of disrespect shown to the hundreds of pannists
who took part in the festival. After starting half
an hour late, members of bp Renegades were made
to perform in the dark, the audience called for
the lights but little did they know there were none.

Antigua Sun
Cordice champions inaugural Moods
Of Pan 25-a-side
Antigua & Barbuda, W.I.
-
Putting down
his camera for a moment, even the photographer had to
grab the hand of possibly the youngest pan arranger in
Antigua and Barbuda and congratulate Khan Cordice.
Shouting with amazement, the photographer announced,
“Boss, you realise you beat Stone, Robin, Lacu and
Veron?!”
To say the pan season is
winding down, the first “mood” of the pan festival
certainly heated the weekend with its inaugural Cool &
Smooth Gemonites Moods of Pan Lenroy “Jughead” Gordon
25-a-side.
Responding to the pan
fraternity’s desire to compete amongst each other
outside of the singular opportunity during Carnival’s
Panorama, the Gemonites Moods of Pan committee thought
it was time to create another avenue for healthy
competition. Commemorating its tenth year of the
festival, last Friday night saw patrons and community
bands gathered for another chance to vie for bragging
rights.
