“The Bradley
Years”
The
Bradley Years represent the definitive collection
of steelband music arrangements and performances
for a large steel orchestra. This collection
showcases seven classic arrangements from the
master arranger Clive Bradley. Bradley
is considered to be the best steelband music
arranger ever by many, including his peers.
In addition, the arrangements are performed
by one of the finest steelbands in the world,
New York’s Pantonic Steel Orchestra. Clive Bradley
had a very special relationship with Pantonic.
This orchestra clinched the title of panorama
champions five times in seven years - performing
Bradley’s musical works. The performances
were captured by Basement Recordings days before,
and in one instance, mere moments before they
took the stage for the prestigious annual steelband
music panorama competition.
The recordings capture, reproduce
and present an unrivalled clarity with sonic
realism, of a large steel orchestra fielding
between one hundred and one hundred twenty musicians
- unlike any other steelband music recordings
in its class.
This body of musical work is a sterling addition
for all fans, educators, players, historians
and fine music collectors.

Hanover concert celebrates steel drum
program
|
Pennsylvania, USA -
Several Hanover middle and high school students
showed off their musical talent at the first
Hanover Steel drum concert held Sunday
afternoon.
The
students performed alongside steel drum
instructor and musician Eric Fountain, of
Mannette Steel, who travels to the area at least
once a year to teach his steel drum program to
Hanover students. The music, mostly African, is
about celebration, Fountain said.
"Get up
and dance," Fountain told the audience at
Hanover Middle School on Sunday. "Enjoy
yourself. I would say we have food, but we
don't," he added with a laugh.
And the
Hanover students had reason to celebrate. Two
years ago, Fountain started his program in
the Hanover school district. The students at
that time were his guinea pigs, he said.

York County School of the Arts students
learn to play steel drums
York County School of the Arts offers rhythm
ensemble
|
Virginia, USA -
Members of a rhythm ensemble at the York County
School of the Arts aren't marching but they are
moving to the beat of a unique drum — the steel
drum.
Every
Monday afternoon the resonate, bell-like sounds
of the drums, also known as steelpans, spills
out into the school's halls. Freshman Katherine
Dillman said behind the music is "a bunch of
kids learning the steel drums and having fun."
The
ensemble got its start last school year after
SOA teacher Renee Kingan, who'd seen a student
steel drum ensemble through the Virginia
Festival of the Arts perform the year prior,
reached out to festival organizers to inquire
about starting a rhythm project in York County.
....Sophia
Subero, Virginia Festival of the Arts rhythm
project director, manages nine projects at
schools throughout Hampton Roads. She said the
drums are a good gateway instrument to get kids
hooked on music for life.

So are they that good? Is it myth, perception or reality? The ‘Big Five’ are Exodus, Trinidad All Stars, Phase II, Renegades and Desperadoes.
