exception. A first-place tie and a last-place judgment have
generated endless debate. But despite the annual tension,
frustration and hints of conspiracy, the competition continues
to resonate with the people, regardless of their socioeconomic
status.

Steel Orchestras Tie For First - Trinidad & Tobago

After a season of competition in the 2024 Trinidad & Tobago
National Panorama, there are new Panorama champions. Yes, that’s
right - there is a tie for first place in this year’s Panorama,
so it is celebration time in two pan yards. The 2023 champions
Renegades Steel Orchestra did what they set out to do: they
retained the title, and became the band with the most national
Panorama titles in the history of the competition - thirteen in
all.

Eleven large steel orchestras compete in the ultimate steelband
music competition - the annual Trinidad & Tobago National
Panorama. After preliminary and semi-finals rounds, these bands
which made the cut are expected to deliver stunning final night
performances on stage at ‘Carnival City,’ Queen’s Park Savannah
in Port-of-Spain.
...For the record, there is no large steel orchestra
representation from sister isle Tobago in the 2024 Panorama
finals. Buccooneers Steel Orchestra has been the Tobago
qualifier in the recent past.

New York, USA - For those not in Trinidad and Tobago to have a taste of Pan and
Carnival for 2024, there is that opportunity to have
both, if you are in New York come Saturday February 10.
Happening during New York’s Fashion Week, on the calendar is Pan
with fashion and flair at one of the city’s premiere event
venues - the Triangle Loft, 5th floor, at 675 Hudson Street in
New York City.
Pan and Carnival on D Runway is presented by Mum and
Me Productions (in the persons of talented mother-daughter duo
Mum Laura and daughter Jolanta Kissoon Young).

South/Central Pan Champs 2024: Order of Appearance

The event that showcases steelband in the southland aka
‘South/Central Pan Champs’ is back after a 19-year-hiatus.
Re-introduced by the current administration of Pan Trinbago, it
has been renamed in the honor of late national steelpan icon,
the beloved Ken “Professor” Philmore.
....Thirteen conventional steel orchestras and three single pan
bands are in the contest to triumph in their respective
grouping.

A repeat of results - THA Pan Champs 2024 mirrored those of
2023, that is: arranger Kersh Ramsey kept his hold on all three
categories at stake in the competition. Single pan, small and
large steel orchestra glory - where Metro Stars, New East Side
Dimension, and Katzenjammers, respectively - successfully
defending titles - were all led musically by Ramsey.

The Dwight Yorke Stadium in Tobago was the event venue where
Sangre Grande Cordettes, the first steel orchestra heard from at
8:00 p.m., set the stage for an evening of performances before
judges and steelpan music lovers alike.

Friends Again
Facebook “Likes” sends PanOnTheNet Apology - “We got it
wrong”
Metaverse - Facebook got it
wrong. About three years ago without warning or reason all WST
(When Steel Talks) steelpan-related accounts fell out of favor
with the social media giant Facebook now known as Meta and its
aligned consortiums (Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp). Because
WST has all of our material hosted on our own shared servers,
this ‘tag’ was not incurable or as problematic as it could have
been. However, it was annoying to have people seeking critical
steelpan music info diverted by Facebook AI (artificial
intelligence).

Global - On Tuesday July 26, 2022 the
steelpan instrument of Trinidad and Tobago is featured and celebrated on the
site of technology giant “Google” via the famed Google ‘Doodle.’ The ‘Doodle’
is essentially an illustrative change made to the Google corporate logo “to
celebrate holidays, anniversaries, and the lives of famous artists, pioneers,
and scientists” - and more. The doodle is then seen by users all around the
world who access Google’s homepage on that day, and is available thereafter
in the doodle archives.
....Trinidad and Tobago-based artist Nicholas Huggins is the creator of the
illustrative artwork featured in the doodle, while
Etienne Charles is the composer
of the accompanying music performed by the legendary steelpan icon
Len “Boogsie”
Sharpe.
