High Expectations for
New York Panorama 2006
Can Promoters and Steelband
Association
Deliver the Goods?
New York - The expectations of
the steelband music performing community and the listening audience are again
extremely high for the 2006 New York panorama. The steelpan artists are
still looking for a visually and technically, award-winning production that is
worthy of, and that can approximate and support - the musical mastery
and stunning live performances, they - the steelpan artists themselves - deliver at the Big Apple event.
This year's event is dedicated to Clive Bradley who epitomized musical excellence;
he himself was the consummate performer.

Pantonic Looks To Repeat its Championship Ways Post-Bradley
(Keith Roberts takes over the reigns
of one of the most coveted steelband music arranging jobs in world)
New York - Regardless of the results of this year's 2006 New York steelband music panorama competition, reigning champions Pantonic Steel Orchestra
have distinguished themselves as one of the greatest musical entities to grace the North American continent.
The Bradley/Pantonic hall of fame era is sealed in gold with five championships in seven years. However, more than the championships, it was
the music that was created through that marriage [Bradley/Pantonic] and the classic performances that will
be remembered, cherished and talked about for years to come.
Stranger, In My House, Ben Lion, Trini To The Bone and
Action have all now moved into the steelband music classics area - an area that is reserved for a very select few - of which of course
master arranger Clive Bradley was no stranger.

A Blast From the Past - Remembering
The New York Steelband
Raids
We have insisted and continue to insist that the
uniqueness of the West Indian kar-na-val is one that has to be
understood in its own cultural context. This is not a parade. We're not
marching. This is not a festival. We don't put on cultural dances. This is
kar-na-val.
—rebel steelband advocate Dawad W. Philip
Almost nightly since August 16, police, firefighters,
and building inspectors have raided a Brooklyn lot occupied by steelband
players and masquerade designers preparing for the Labor Day West Indian
carnival. The crackdown coincides with borough-wide raids, which have
disrupted or completely shut down some pan yards, mas' camps, and backyard
parties, and the Giuliani administration's ban on the sale of alcohol
during the nation's largest ethnic gathering.

In Symphonic Flight
Steelbands Vie for Top Honors In Panorama Showdown
By Glenda Cadogan
New York - The Panorama
competition at the grounds of the Brooklyn Museum is one of the favorite
activities organized by the West Indian American Day Carnival Association
and not just that because the stakes are high and the competition intense.
An extraordinary quality comes in to play when steel
orchestras in the competition reach their defining moment the
10-minute segment when the ensembles perform their tune of choice.
During those magical moments, those 10 minutes of glory,
the steelpan players enter another world. One pan man described it as taking
a symphonic flight.
Its a time when the world stops and nothing else matters.
For each of those 600 seconds, its al about rubber mallets skillfully
striking steel and making music. And from that performance, one band may
achieve crowning glory the Panorama contests first prize.
In Panorama 1999, that band was the Pantonic Steel
Orchestra, an ensemble of about 100 musicians ages 7 to 27. The Brooklyn
Museum grounds were teeming with more than 3,000 pan enthusiasts waiting in
energetic anticipation, because Pantonic's tune of choice was arranged by
master musician Clive Bradley returning to the New York circuit after
an extended hiatus. And the pan fans were not disappointed.

UK 2006 NATIONAL PANORAMA COMPETITION
United Kingdom -
This year the UK Pan Community celebrates the 28th Anniversary of the Notting Hill Panorama, ‘Champions of Steel’ competition on the 26th August 2006 at the Horniman’s Pleasance, Kensal Road, Ladbroke Grove, London. In 1964, Rhaune Laslette, the organiser of the inaugural Notting Hill Children’s Neighbourhood Festival invited the Russell Henderson steelband to perform. Steelband music was the first recognised form of music to appear at the Carnival and continues to play an important role in what is now termed the largest street festival in Europe and possibly the world with the exception of Brazil’s Carnival. Russell was named in the Queen’s birthday honours list to receive an MBE for his contribution to music, a well-deserved award for an accomplished musician.

NEWS RELEASE
Desperadoes Not Performing
in New York in August
WITCO Desperadoes Steel Orchestra
will not be performing at the advertised concerts at KC Hideaway in
Brooklyn, New York on the weekend of August 18, 2006.
Desperadoes regrets the disappointment to its
supporters in New York and throughout the United States but the Band bears
no responsibility for the cancellation. Desperadoes fulfilled all its
obligations under the contract made with the promoter and was ready and
prepared to travel to New York for the performances. The cancellation has
caused financial loss to the Band and negatively impacted the internal
operations of the Band.
The promoter took the decision to cancel the
performance without any consultation with Desperadoes and further failed to
inform the Band about his decision. Desperadoes learnt about the
cancellation from other sources subsequently.

'NO SHOWS'
Fingers pointed at promoter for cancellation of Desperadoes & Starlift
New York Concerts

New York
-
More
details continue to emerge concerning the circumstances surrounding the
impromptu cancellation of the much-anticipated concerts featuring
Desperadoes and Starlift Steel Orchestras. The two musical legends
were scheduled first to perform August 19 & 20, 2006 at KC's Hideaway in
Brooklyn, New York. Then the shows' promoter Kenneth Charles aka
KC
(pictured),
revised the dates to August 18 & 19, citing another event on August 20.
Curiously enough, this weekend would have actually been the third
date-change for Desperadoes, as KC originally publicized the orchestra for
July 2006 performances.

Sakésho is one of the première groups to come through Lincoln Centers'
2006 "Out

A s early as an hour
before the scheduled 6:30 pm start, the plaza was already buzzing with
anticipation. The seats began to fill quickly as Sakésho went
through it's sound check. Sakésho was in the house and a crowd who
are accustomed to great performances and knew it. The North Stage placed
between the Julliard School of Music and the
Metropolitan Opera House with the Lincoln Center Library and Theater
serving as a backdrop provided an interesting acoustical and visual

Pan Trinbago mourns the loss
of former President
Trinidad - This
morning Pan Trinbago received the sad news of Sydney Gollop’s passing.
Sydney Gollop was respected and revered for his most outstanding
contribution to the steelband movement. It was Gollop who in 1950 had the
distinction of being elected to the position of provisional President of the
very first National Steelband Association. At a subsequent meeting, he
was elected to the post in full.
Sydney Gollop fought the cause of every panman and would often find himself
in the court houses in La Brea, Point Fortin, San Fernando, Arima and
anywhere, should a member of any steelband be arrested. He appeared and
represented them with vigour and clear articulation.
When Trinidad Alll Steel Percussion Orchestra (TASPO) was billed to
represent this country in 1951, Sydney was at the forefront raising funds
and ensuring that every thing was in order.
Up to recently, Sydney was involved in several research projects at Pan
Trinbago.

Trinidad Government Blanks
Steelpan Fraternity
When Steel Talks receives many hundreds
of thousands of hits weekly on our websites from
people all over the world looking for
information on the steelpan instrument. In
addition, we field numerous inquires from some
of the world's most prestigious music
institutions interested in every aspect of the
steelpan instrument. The popularization of the
steelpan instrument is a global phenomenon that
has been fueled primarily by the steelpan
players.
As recently detailed in one of Trinidad's
national papers (the Trinidad Express), it has been brought to our
attention that the Trinidad and Tobago government has a bill payment
problem. Specifically it has a chronic problem - being the root cause
of its steelband musicians and organizations not being paid in a
reasonable and timely fashion. As if it is not embarrassing enough not
to pay your own country's musicians and organization, Trinidad and
Tobago actually owes the foreign participants in the 2005 World
Steelband Music Festival held in the summer of 2005 at Madison Square
Garden - prize purses won at that competition. Several of the foreign
participants have expressed their dismay and shock at the Trinidad and
Tobago government's behavior.
