“The Bradley
Years”
The
Bradley Years represent the definitive collection
of steelband music arrangements and performances
for a large steel orchestra. This collection
showcases seven classic arrangements from the
master arranger Clive Bradley. Bradley
is considered to be the best steelband music
arranger ever by many, including his peers.
In addition, the arrangements are performed
by one of the finest steelbands in the world,
New York’s Pantonic Steel Orchestra. Clive Bradley
had a very special relationship with Pantonic.
This orchestra clinched the title of panorama
champions five times in seven years - performing
Bradley’s musical works. The performances
were captured by Basement Recordings days before,
and in one instance, mere moments before they
took the stage for the prestigious annual steelband
music panorama competition.
The recordings capture, reproduce
and present an unrivalled clarity with sonic
realism, of a large steel orchestra fielding
between one hundred and one hundred twenty musicians
- unlike any other steelband music recordings
in its class.
This body of musical work is a sterling addition
for all fans, educators, players, historians
and fine music collectors.

50 Years of Panorama Later – Ray Holman -
Still A Touch of Class
|
|
Global
- It is said that our lives
are inextricably linked together in ways we may
never know or imagine.
....Years ago a very young
Ray Holman arranged the Beatles’ original and
the now classic Penny Lane for Starlift
Steel Orchestra. While this song’s Pan
arrangement and performance indeed have special
meaning and memories to a generation of steelpan
music lovers of the Golden Age of Pan, it is a
little known sidebar to this - that turned what
meant nothing at the time, into a momentous
moment in the annals of steelpan music history.

Seeing Greens
($$$) - Panorama Culture and Self-Respect be
Damned?
|
|
Trinidad
& Tobago
- It’s hard to believe that
the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago could
ever look at the diametrically opposing forces
of the Panorama and party on the Greens and say
- “now that’s what I’m talking about.” It is
hard to imagine the government officials, or
CEOs of the companies that sponsor the toxic mix
of the Greens and Panorama saying “I don’t mind
if my grandchild - after hard work and study for
a music performance in a National Championship -
plays his/her heart out, but is nothing more
than background music to a disinterested
gathering.” Yet this is exactly what transpired
at the event.
Another year has passed and
the big Pan Trinbago-organized shebang on the
“Greens” during the semi finals of the Panorama
was apparently completed without incident - due
in part to the reportedly heavy police and
military presence.

No Pan on TV - 50 Panoramas Later in
Trinidad and Tobago --- “A Public Flogging!!”
|
|
Global
- In the now classic Panorama
tune “Band From Space” by Amrit Samaroo, the
‘aliens’ revealed that they learned everything
about Pan from monitoring TTT (Trinidad & Tobago
Television, the former incarnation of the
government’s television station) on their
intergalactic television sets. Sadly for our
‘green friends’ from out-of-space, in this
pinnacle year celebrating the annual Panorama
competition - there was no television signal to
monitor, galactically, internationally or
locally this past Panorama semi finals.
Ironically this year, 2013,
is supposed to be the acknowledgement and
celebration of 50 years of steel orchestra
Panorama competitions in Trinidad & Tobago, the
“home of Steelpan.”

Peace and Pan on the Greens

|
|
Trinidad & Tobago,
W.I. -
Unlike the violence between North Stand patrons
and the police at last year’s National Panorama
semi-finals at the Greens in the Queen's Park
Savannah, in Port-of-Spain, yesterday’s Panorama
semis saw only good pan music and a good time by
those gathered.
A heavy police presence
augmented by soldiers meant that there were no
untoward incidents as scores of pan lovers
filled the North Stand and Greens, while only
half of the Grand Stand was filled with patrons
up to 4 pm yesterday.
Patrons at the North Stand
were not able to enter the Greens this year and
as such there was no repeat of the
ugly scenes
of last year when police officers confronted and
in some cases, beat patrons, who tried to cross
over via an open gate.

Single Pan Band Finalists: Trinidad &
Tobago Steelband Panorama 2013
|
|
Global
- 2012 Single Pan Band champs
San Juan East Side Symphony is the band to beat
- literally - going into the 2013 finals on
February 7 in San Fernando. Results from the
Single Pan Band semi-final rounds attested to
the East-zone band’s ability to stave off
challengers – up to this point – from thirty-two
competitors. That field has narrowed to fifteen
after the January 26 semi-finals at the Queen’s
Park Savannah in Port-of-Spain. If San Juan East
Side Symphony wins, it would be a hat-trick for
the band.

Merle Albino-De Coteau Shines as Panorama
2013 commentator - Vibe CT 105.1 FM delivers the
goods
|
|
Global
- ....While it is true that
beggars cannot be choosers, in this case when
the two stations overlapped in coverage there
was only one real choice. That was Vibe CT 105.1
FM which was clearly superior. For reasons
unknown to us i95.5 FM’s broadcast was limited
to a single channel. The audio quality of 105.1
FM was vastly superior. i95.5 FM had unexplained
technical difficulties that simply should not be
happening in the year 2013. Both stations
provided veteran commentators, however Mrs.
Merle Albino-De Coteau on Vibe CT 105.1 FM gave
a “ready for prime time” performance. Mrs.
Albino-De Couteau - a Panorama judge in her own
right - provided thoughtful, useful and accurate
information and insight into both the
performances and judging mindset.

Fantastic Songwriters Strut their Talent for
Panorama 2013 on When Steel Talks - no more “one
and done”
|
|
Global
- 2013 again turned out to be
a bumper year for songs for this year’s Trinidad
and Tobago national steelband panorama
competition. Over sixty songs were submitted to
When Steel Talks by songwriters from all over.
“Dat is Lie,” written for Invaders Steel
Orchestra by Arddin Herbert, Ricardo Jones and
Roland Yearwood has just rounded out, this phase
of the ‘Pan songs’ for 2013. As each Panorama
season approaches annually, It is of course
always the hope of these talented writers that
their composition be picked up as the tune of
choice by the competing steel orchestra
franchises, thereby playing a significant role
in the initial leg of the Panorama championship
journey.
This year’s songs, as is
normally the case, cover a host of topics and
social commentary which include international &
local politics, sports, humor, culture and much
comedy. The varied backgrounds of the writers
are sometimes as magnetic and compelling, as the
attractive storylines of the musical products
that their tunes produce.

Calypso, pan and limbo film classic now
restored
|
|
Trinidad & Tobago, W.I.
-
Of all the early films involving calypso,
Windjammer is perhaps the strangest and rarest
of the lot.
....The scenes in Windjammer
filmed in Trinidad offer a fascinating glimpse
into the early developments of calypso and
steelband and are not to be missed. The Trinidad
portion begins and ends with scenes that feature
the steelbands Boystown from Carenage and
Silvertones from Belmont—both of which no longer
exist.
The Trinidad scenes takes
place over the course of a dozen or so days
while the ship was docked in Trinidad.
Interestingly, Windjammer
offers one of the first detailed filming of
Trinidadian steelband performance known to exist
anywhere. The scenes include a dance on the
docks next to the boat, a steelband performing
pan-around-the-neck marching down the streets in
what appears to be Laventille Hill, and multiple
scenes of steelbands performing on the Christian
Radich itself.

Candice Andrews is a Boss of the Steel Pan
|
|
Trinidad & Tobago, W.I.
-
At just 36, she is the youngest & first female
Captain of the world famous BP Renegades. Even
at her young age, she already has 21 years with
Renegades under her belt. Her status in the band
has clearly been earned through commitment,
determination & hard work.
As a child, Candice's
grandmother's home was right next to the panyard
on Charlotte Street (now an army base) and she
very often played there. But her real
introduction to playing a pan herself came at
school, Woodbrook Government Secondary, where at
age 15 she learned to play the national anthem
on a steelpan. The accomplishment encouraged
her, and that very year she officially joined
Renegades.
In addition to playing, she
also steadily worked her way up through the
ranks of administration, first as a committee
member, then Assistant Secretary, Secretary,
Vice Captain and then Captain (now in her second
term of office).

The management of four-time National Panorama

not take the commitment of its members who
represent the brand lightly, says operations
manager Owen Serrette.
He said the band, in spite of
its challenges, continues to serve as a beacon

adding positively to the musical landscape of
T&T.
....“Panorama is what every
steelband person lives for. We are aiming to be

to be in the finals. We see the ingredients that
have been missing and all we have to do it is
put our shoulders to the wheel,” he said.

South bands struggling to find players for
Panorama
|
|
Trinidad & Tobago, W.I.
-
While the national Panorama competitions
continue to flourish in Port-of-Spain,
steelbands in San Fernando are struggling to
find players to launch a big challenge. The
present situation is not overnight development,
said David Balbosa, co-leader of Hatter’s Steel
Orchestra, who urged stakeholders to come
together to solve the problem since he fears the
art form is dying in south Trinidad.
“There has been a decline in
players because a trend has taken over the whole
movement nationally where people don’t want to
play pan without getting money for it. They are
demanding big sums of money and some band can’t
afford it. As a result, it is affecting the
numbers in the band,” Balbosa said.

Justice Ricky Rahim in the

The election was scheduled
for October 28 but Simpson and Hernandez, as
well as Maurice Alexander and Steadson Jack of

nominations to the elections for a new executive

Back for 2013 Panorama, Narell Talks Pan -
Lots of It
by Dalton Narine
|
|
Global
- Andy Narell is back for
Panorama 2013. The American-Trinidadian will be
right at home among a fraternity of arrangers.
And even narrowed in the small corner of elite
composer-arrangers. It’s been 12 years since he
last arranged in the competition. Competition?
Well, Narell has a lot on his mind, and he
doesn’t mind sharing thoughts, ideas - for that
matter, all things Pan. So it hang, so we let it
fall...
“I missed participating in
Panorama, but being in a music competition is
not what motivates me. I like the challenges of
trying to write a good piece, getting the
players interested in the story I’m telling, and
getting a good performance from the band.
Hearing the music played by 100 people is a
high.”

NP
|
|
Trinidad & Tobago, W.I.
-
The National Petroleum Company (NP) has donated
its drum-making factory to Pan Trinbago to be
used for the manufacturing of the steelpan.
....“Just yesterday
(Wednesday) NP donated it’s drum-making facility
to us,” Diaz added.

faced a drum shortage in 2011 when the machine

Like father, like son

|
|
Trinidad & Tobago,
W.I. -
The son of legendary steelband arranger Jit
Samaroo and the next generation of the famous
musical “Samaroo” family (Samaroo Jets), Amrit
Samaroo is intent on continuing his ailing
father’s legacy having had his grounding in the
pan from a very early age.
Thirty-year-old Samaroo has
always been surrounded by music and has been
inspired by the work of his father for as long
as he could remember. He started playing pan at
the age of six. During his formative years as a
musician, he won first place at SanFest and the
School’s Music Festival in 1992 and 1999
respectively.
....In 2012, he took the
Melodian Steel Orchestra to the big stage at the
Panorama finals in the medium band category for
the first time in 16 years. Samaroo and his
cousin Antony formed a small steelband,
Supernovas, which placed second in its category.

Steelpan odyssey

“You might want to cover your ears. This is
gonna be loud.”
I am standing beneath a
rusted tin canopy in a modest backyard studio in
Laventille, a labyrinthine community tucked deep
within the hills of Port of Spain, Trinidad. It
is here, in this gritty, working-class
neighbourhood, that the steelpan—the Caribbean’s
quintessential instrument—was born. All around
me are discarded oil barrels, some on racks,
some in stacks, each awaiting a second life far
more lovely and melodic than its first.
As the noonday sun beats
down, steelpan-maker Rolly Hart grabs a hammer
and steadies the overturned oil barrel before
him. He eyes the barrel’s flat surface, looking
at the veiny lines he’s just drawn to mark out
the drum’s soft spots. “Okay,” he cautions me
again. “This’ll be loud.”
BAM.
I jump at the deafening
clang, despite the double warning.
BAM BAM BAM.

Granding the Pan
|
|
Trinidad & Tobago, W.I.
-
Last Sunday’s Piano and Pan Recital at Queen’s
Hall, reintroduced both pan aficionados and
those with a classical taste to two Trini-born
maestros, who have successfully carved out
international careers in the highly competitive
field of classical music, from their stateside
bases.
Conductor, pianist and choral
director Richard Tang Yuk joined steelpan (and
sometime violin) virtuoso Liam Teague for a
recital as eclectic as the programme notes were
amusing, informative and just a touch irreverent
(a generous gesture aimed at deflating any of
the pomp some may associate with such
circumstances).

Cool Hand Smooth:
All Stars, Arranger, ‘Bounce and Drive’ on Hat-Trick Hunt
|
|
Global
- Well, Leon Edwards is not known as Smooth in the pantheon of steel band lore for nothing. In the late 60s, Edwards and Clyde Boland, a Trinidad All Stars bandmate, had just exchanged greetings in the pan yard on lower St. Vincent Street.
“How things?” Boland enquired. “Smooth,” Edwards shot back. “He name Smooth,” his friend said, smiling, “Man, he’s smooth.”
Edwards now recalls the game-changer with relish, obviously untroubled by the jangle of distinctive chirps of frogs in the night outside the Curepe home he and his wife share.
