“The Bradley
Years”
The
Bradley Years represent the definitive collection
of steelband music arrangements and performances
for a large steel orchestra. This collection
showcases seven classic arrangements from the
master arranger Clive Bradley. Bradley
is considered to be the best steelband music
arranger ever by many, including his peers.
In addition, the arrangements are performed
by one of the finest steelbands in the world,
New York’s Pantonic Steel Orchestra. Clive Bradley
had a very special relationship with Pantonic.
This orchestra clinched the title of panorama
champions five times in seven years - performing
Bradley’s musical works. The performances
were captured by Basement Recordings days before,
and in one instance, mere moments before they
took the stage for the prestigious annual steelband
music panorama competition.
The recordings
capture, reproduce and present an unrivalled
clarity with sonic realism, of a large steel
orchestra fielding between one hundred and one
hundred twenty musicians - unlike any other
steelband music recordings in its class.
This body
of musical work is a sterling addition for all
fans, educators, players, historians and fine
music collectors.

How to Stop Worrying
About Duvone Stewart
BP Renegades Has a
Feeling In Its Soul Like It Born Again

by Dalton Narine |
|
Trinidad & Tobago
- I know a delusional
man who thinks he’s witnessing from the front
seat of his car a flamingo laughing at the
antics of a clown.
But it’s
just BP Renegades arranger Duvone Stewart
performing his usual nightly theatrical
presentation — not those of a clown — to the
music of Nadia Batson’s Hookin' Meh, sung by
Farmer Nappy.
People
should focus on themselves without worrying
about others. This is how I see it.
For sure,
the band legitimately has Duvone at its disposal
and Duvone executes his routine while drilling
the band in preparation for Panorama.

Steelpan for the
digital age
Johann Chuckaree's
Indigisounds redefines the national instrument |
|
Trinidad
& Tobago, W.I. - At the age
of 29, Johann Chuckaree, runs different
businesses and juggles that with a demanding
performance schedule. His advice? Surround
yourself with the right people and learn from
your mistakes.
A well-known panist, Chuckaree does not have a
business background but, in addition to his
career as a solo musician, he is also the
co-founder and business development manager at
Indigisounds, and the founder of JC
Networking and Security Ltd.
....Chuckaree’s
love for music started when he began playing the
steelpan at age four. In 2003, he joined Phase
II Pan Groove and immediately felt at home.
There he learned from the members, including
arranger
Len “Boogsie” Sharpe.

get an early taste of Carnival, seeing that

‘Pass The Pepper’

Trinidad & Tobago
- Every once in a
while there comes along a man so multi-talented
in the arts that no one specific field can
satisfy his creative energy.
An old
saying has it that nothing concentrates the mind
like the threat or thought of defeat.
All
dramatic stories involve conflict. Typically,
the narrative will open with some sense of a
normal society, as in Smooth and Trinidad All

Trinidad
& Tobago, W.I. -
Brilliant morning sunshine to start, unavoidable
rain event temporarily putting a pause on the
show toward the end. But what was the ‘constant’
that the weather book-ended? The powerful and
determined performances put on by the youthful
steelband musicians of Trinidad and Tobago. From
the Primary Schools, through their Secondary
counterparts, and finally the Under
21/Non-School division, it was Pan and Passion
all through the day into the night time. But
unlike 2018 when all three champions retained
their titles, all were dethroned in 2019...

Exodus wins injunction
against Pan Trinbago
“Yes” to Kees’ ‘Savannah Grass’
 |
|
Trinidad & Tobago, W.I.
- Republic Bank Exodus
will be allowed to play Kees Dieffenthaller’s
Savannah Grass
for the upcoming
Panorama final, Justice
Kevin Ramcharan has ruled.
Ramcharan
gave the decision late last night during an
emergency sitting of the High Court after the
attorneys for
Exodus filed an injunction against
Pan Trinbago
earlier in the day.
The
decision came at the same time Republic Bank was
hosting a lime at the Tunapuna panyard of the
four-time Panorama champions.
Exodus’
manager
Ainsworth Mohammed
said the decision would have made last night’s
lime “a little brighter” on the steps of the
Hall of Justice around 9 pm, moments after
Ramcharan had read out his judgement.
“We are
actually very relieved but I must admit I felt
it was a sad day and a sad week for pan and the
steelband movement and we don’t gloat in that
kind of thing. We don’t gloat in victories like
this. We would like to see the steelband
movement move forward with strength and that is
the most important thing for us,” Mohammed said.

Pan Trinbago Takes It
Twice on the Chin - Loses in the Court of Law
and in the Court of Public Opinion
It’s a “Go” for
‘Savannah Grass’
 |
|
Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. -
This was not just a legal
loss in the courts, it was also a severe
“beat-down” for the new Pan Trinbago executive
in the eyes of the public. They were savaged and
severely criticized for their position on social
media platforms across a wide cross section of
steelband Panorama music fans, supporters and
players. Mired in controversy, charges of
corruption, incompetence and mismanagement - the
embattled organization has been extremely
unpopular with steelband musicians in recent
years.
If the
organization was looking to make a fresh start
and a change of perception it failed miserably.
The overwhelming consensus is that people felt
that Pan Trinbago should have addressed the
issue (the change in tune decided on by Exodus
Steel Orchestra) at the conclusion of Panorama
2019, since there was no existing rule against
this move.

Well Ain’t That Ah
(&*!!%$@%&?!) Desperadoes Never Got the Memo - ?
Trinidad & Tobago
Panorama 2019
 |
|
Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. -
In our last When Steel Talks
Panorama chit-chat it seemed like the imperial
Renegades Steel Orchestra was on its musical
trek to uncommon greatness, while taking
measurements for extra large garbage-bag coffins
(musically speaking) for the other large band
competitors in this prestigious Panorama
competition.
Indeed an
‘implied’ memo from the Renegades camp, was sent
out to all regions - North, South/Central, East
and Tobago in a very public manner after the
prelim results came in. “Surrender peacefully -
you must comply - resistance is futile.” With
the closest challenger to the champs eight
points behind at that stage - it truly seemed
like this story was going to be forever told the
way Duvone Stewart and The Renegades wrote the
script.

The Renegades Revolution
by Sharmain Baboolal
 |
|
Trinidad & Tobago, W.I.
- It was at the start
of the seventh year of famine that Duvone
Stewart and the Renegades crossed the bridge.
When Joseph interpreted Pharoah’s dream (Genesis
41:30) he saw that seven years of abundance
would have been reversed with seven years of
famine.
Then would
seven years of famine be followed by seven years
of plenty?
Indeed, it
was in 2018, the seventh year since Duvone
Stewart accepted the responsibility as an
arranger for the Renegades Steel Orchestra, that
he won a Panorama Championship.

Exodus Steel Orchestra
Switches Songs for 2019 Panorama Finals - Will

arranger for Exodus Steel Orchestra Pelham
Goddard confirmed that the news on the ground
was accurate. That the band had scrapped its
original Panorama tune for 2019 - Rag Storm
- and instead was going with the one of the most
popular tunes in the country - Savannah Grass
by Kes.
“You found
out about changing the song” said a laughing
Pelham. “I decided to do that because it’s like
they ain’t taking me on with...Rag Storm,”
referring to the steel orchestra’s original tune
of choice. Exodus placed ninth out of ten steel

Arrangers are people too,

Enthusiastically, I

stories...
by Sharmain Baboolal
 |
|
Trinidad & Tobago, W.I.
- It was my first ever
night time assignment. And my first foray into
steelband journalism, if we can call it that.
Being the
kind of boss that he was, the late
Editor/Publisher Patrick Chookolingo called me
into his office and asked whether I could make
it while assuring me that he had assigned a
photographer who would ensure that I got home
safely.
The
assignment: to interview all the conductors of
the bands participating in the 1982 Steelband

being staged at the Jean Pierre Sporting Complex

So said so

Pan and the future of
work
An opinion
by Wesley Gibbings
 |
|
Trinidad & Tobago
- What do Panorama
2019 and the International Labour Organisation’s
(ILO) obsession with “the future of work” have
in common? Everything. There he goes again, you
say: “Pan–the greatest thing we do” and all that
stuff.
....Why
aren’t we harnessing more out of the vast energy
generated by a central element of the creative
industry?
....We may
soon also lose a virtual monopoly on the
pan-tuning “industry”—we don’t call it that, but
it is an industry. And, arranging for pan,
though we have the best pan arrangers in the
world right here, will slip through our fingers
if we continue to focus solely on the Panorama
competition to display the best.

playing with other bands was to learn other
people’s styles,” arranger Carlon “Panman”
Harewood confessed in an interview one day after
he won his fourth successive Single Pan
Championship title on February 3rd.
Eventually, his style emerged. He describes it
as “arranging on the cliff.”
The
champs, San Juan East Side Symphony, was just
one of the two bands for which Carlon arranged
music. The other is his home band Potential
Symphony, in the medium category....

CAL flies with
Skiffle
State airline
stands by South band
 |
|
Trinidad
& Tobago, W.I. -
Even as steelbands continue to struggle
for sponsorship for this year’s Panorama,
Caribbean Airlines (CAL) has pledged to support
San Fernando-based Skiffle steel orchestra for a
second year.
CAL’s CEO Garvin Medera said they also intend to
surpass the excellent results of 2018 when the
formidable team of CAL and Skiffle placed second
in the finals. This was the highest placing in
Skiffle’s history. At an exhibition night at the
Coffee Street pan yard on Friday, ahead of the
preliminary judging today, co-captain Joshua
Regrello put 2018 winner bp Renegades on notice.
“This year we are bringing it down south. I tell
you proudly, no band would stand in our way.”
The band has again teamed up with arrangers Odie
Gonzales, Kendall Williams and Marc Brooks who
took them to second place with Hello, in 2018.
The co-captains Brandon Babb and Regrello are
hoping the arrangers can work their magic and
move them one notch higher to first place with
their 2019 selection, So Long by Nadia Batson.

Asami’s case a
priority for Cold Case Unit |
|
Trinidad
& Tobago, W.I. - Three
years after the murder of Japanese pan player
Asami Nagakiya, the T&T Police Service’s Cold
Case Unit has found new information which can
help solve the case.
Head of
the Unit ACP Anthony James confirmed the police
had gotten information which “points in a
certain direction” ahead of today’s third
anniversary of the discovery of Nagakiya’s body.
“There may
be some light at the end of this tunnel,” James
added.
Nagakiya,
31, of Sapporo-shi, Hokkaido, had been coming to
T&T since 2009 to play with steelbands.
In 2016,
she had also played mas with Legacy’s Carnival
band. Her body was found by a CEPEP worker on
Ash Wednesday—February 9—at the base of a tree
in the Queen’s Park Savannah. She was still clad
in her Legend’s costume.
An autopsy
revealed she had been strangled.
....Nagakiya’s
colleagues at
Silver Stars Steel Orchestra—the last steelband she had played
with—say they still miss her, remember her and
remain hopeful “always”.

2019 - San Juan East Side Symphony Cops Single
Pan Band Championship Title |

Trinidad
& Tobago, W.I. - Victorious
San Juan East Side Symphony did the East region
proud on February 3, and bested nineteen fellow
participants in the Single Pan Band field of the
2019 Trinidad and Tobago National Panorama, to
become champions in its category. In so doing,
they denied defending champions Newtown Playboys
Steel Symphony the chance to make it
three-in-a-row.
The latter
had to settle for a fourth place-tie with La
Creole Pan Groove....For Harewood - 2019’s winning
Single Pan band arranger - he has returned to winner's
row for the fourth year running. Arranging for
San Juan East Side this year, it had been
Harewood who worked with Newtown Playboys for
their back-to-back championships in 2018 and

Garcia plans to push
steelpan in all schools
 |
|
Trinidad & Tobago, W.I.
- The Pan in School project will be
extended to all primary and secondary schools,
Education Minister Anthony Garcia announced
yesterday during his brief address at the launch
of the 44th National Schools Panorama
2019 at the Queen’s Park Savannah in
Port-of-Spain.
Garcia said there are fewer
discipline problems with students at schools
involved in the ministry’s Multi-Cultural Music
Programme Unit (MMPU).
“I heard mention made about
the Morvant/Laventille project and that project
is a shining example of what music can do for
our students and pan continues to do quite a big
deal for our students and for the people of
Trinidad and Tobago,” he said.
The minister said he will be
extending the pan project to all 455 primary
schools and 125 secondary schools before he
leaves office. He expressed the view that pan in
schools is part and parcel of building
confidence in students.
