The SteelPan
Music Fans and Players Remember
The Master Clive Bradley |
 |
Paris, the 15th of December 2005
Calypsociation would like to send our deepest regrets for
the loss of Clive Bradley. We all know how important
Mr. Bradley was to Trinidad and Tobago and the steel pan
community worldwide. Several of our members were lucky
enough to meet and work with Mr. Bradley, not only was he
a brilliant composer, but he was a very warm-hearted human
being and his loss was a very sad moment for all of us .
For all of these reasons we would like to join and support
you in this period of mourning. We are with you in
our thoughts and if there is anything we can do, please
let us know.
Sincerely,
For CALYPSOCIATION,
Nathalie CLERAULT

Respect
Caribbean Beat has profiled
some of the Caribbean's most brilliant
pan performers, players like
Ray Holman and
Andre Tanker, and over the years
we have followed the growing quantity
and quality of pan recordings. But
so far we have not explored the
world that lies behind those majestic
sounds, the orchestral displays
that so many listeners enjoy at
the Panorama competition during
Trinidad Carnival, or at the World
Steelband Festival, held this year
at Madison Square Garden in New
York. I mean the guys who write
the music; who take simple melodies
and elaborate them into full-scale
arrangements for the orchestras;
who tune the pans and give each
orchestra its own distinctive sound.
But that's something we have to
do soon. Last weekend, we lost one
of the great arrangers,
Clive Bradley, who had worked
for decades with various steel orchestras
and above all with Desperadoes,
the legendary band from on top of
"the Hill" (Laventille). Despers
is the only band with ten Panorama
championships to its name, and Bradley
had quite a bit to do with that.
Clive Bradley's genius lay in the
fact that he knew exactly which
soca or calypso melodies would sound
best on pan (mostly, those of the
late lamented Lord Kitchener), and
he also knew exactly how to develop
and elaborate them so that they
could transcend pretty much every
other Panorama arrangement. He had
worked with Despers long enough
to know exactly how to get the best
effects out of the players and their
instruments.
I have listened to Panorama for
33 years now, and for sheer musicianship
and effectiveness I don't think
Bradley's best work has ever been
surpassed. It was never "surface"
music, written for show and for
easy impact; there was always meat
in it too, always intelligence and
substance, and at his best he could
send shivers down anyone's spine.
Clive Bradley showed everyone just
what pan could be.

HOMAGE TO A GENIUS
How and where do I start to
pay homage to a genius?
His Majesty Clive Bradley to me was a musical God. He touched
my soul with every note that emanated from his sounds.
The Pan Fraternity will never ever be the same, sorry to
say but there is no one in this life time to replace him.
The World at large is a better place because of him, he
has left for us in his will the treasures of all his beautiful
melodies.
The Angels in heaven are again rejoicing because their Prodigal
Brother has returned to their musical symphony, our loss
is their gain. We are very lucky as Pan People to share
his musical creations, his music will live on or generations
to come and help soothe the pain we all share of the greatest
loss in the Pan World.
We should honor him by naming the Panorama Competition (The
Clive Bradley Challenge Trophy). Peace-Love and Blessings
to Brados. Farewell (We Love You).

His music enriched my life,
encouraged me to play and
taught me how to listen.
Truly a legend that should
be recognized as such. I
feel blessed to have been
here during his time, to
bear witness to greatness as
it unfolded. |

I am deeply saddened.
There will never be
another Clive Bradley
because he was unique
and his music was
unique. I had been after
Bradley for thirteen
years to come and
arrange for the Church
but it wasn't meant to
be and every year we'd
laugh about it...even
this year, the day
before Panorama. He
couldn't stop laughing
when I told him I'd be
playing in the Panorama
this year, but who
would've known it would
be his last victory in
New York.
Life is so
unpredictable; Bradley
had so many plans and
ideas that he never had
the chance to finish
because death took him.
But his music and his
joyful personality will
live on in my heart and
memories of us working
on music at the computer
will not soon be
forgotten. He had his
challenges in life as do
we all, but I believe
that he's in a better
place, participating in
another kind or
orchestra; a heavenly
one.

I am a member of STVYSO
and I heard the news
yesterday from another
of my band members who
had had the pleasure of
playing with Pantonic
for a couple of their NY
panoramas. I was looking
forward to coming up
next year to share in
the experience of
working with the master.
I am truly a fan of his
works and I am saddened
by the news. However I
believe that all of
those who have worked
with him will continue
to honor him by playing
his arrangements.
My condolences go out to
Mr. Bradley's family --
immediate and extended.
He touched the souls of
many. Rest in peace.

Right now I am listening to
Action by Desperadoes at T&T
finals in honor of the man.
The minor key jam gives me
chills.
He was the
master of the walking
bassline... the tone of
Desperadoes' basses fit his
basslines perfectly. The way
he would manipulate a mode
so it would simultaneously
appear minor and major is
unique... see Music in We
Blood with Despers or Mind
Yuh Business with Nutones
for example.
To the
sweetest arranger, who could
do so much without even
playing pan himself... rest
in peace. |

I last saw Clive Bradley
in Pantonic and D'Radoes
panyards and we
discussed some pan
ideas. I knew Clive
since his jazz days
playing bass and
arranging for Esquires
combo.Little did I know
that it was to be my
last meeting with this
great icon of the pan
world. I hope
Pantrinbago honor his
memory by creating an
award in his name. I
suggest The Clive
Bradley Arranger's
Trophy for the best
arranger in Panorama. So
long Clive you are the
greatest. What do the
panjumbies think?

Bloody brilliant idea mate!
A Clive Bradley trophy for
best arranger/arrangement
could be a great first step
towards doing away with the
severely flawed system of
awarding first, second and
third prizes, etc. There
could also be an award for
best performance, people's
choice, and best composition
(composed strictly for pan),
etc., etc. The seeds
have now been planted, so
all pan lovers around the
world, who often have
dissatisfaction with
panorama judging, take up
this ball and run with it.
As for Clive, just like Jimi
Hendrix, Bob Marley, John
Coltrane, Bird, etc., before
him; Clive lives through his
works - the music he
selflessly shared with us
all. |

As a young boy growing
up in Diego Martin I
could remember Clive
Bradley as Teacher
Bradley from his days
teaching at Diego Martin
Boys R.C. school this
was in the early 60s
back then you could tell
he was a genius in the
making.....here's a
quote from George
Kallicharan aka 'Yoyo'
taken from
Trinbagopan.com in it's
Tribute to the Legend
Clive Bradley .
"My name is George
Kallicharan aka 'Yoyo'
and I live in Diego
Martin. I am a pan tuner
and eveybody knows me in
the pan world as 'Yoyo'.
Originally I am from
Point Cumana Boys Town.
Boys Town was
the band that won the
first steelband music
festival.
I used to tune and
arrange for a band
called 'Melo
Stars', and
during that time I used
to see Bradley around
with his guitar. One day
I called Bradley and I
ask him to come and try
something with the band.
He decided to come and
he did 'Stardust' and 'I
Who Have Nothing'. We
rocked Port of Spain
Carnival Monday and
Tuesday with those
tunes. The talk spread
when they realize that
Bradley was the man who
made it happen. After
that Bradley worked with
other bands.
The first band
Bradley arrange for was
from Diego Martin.
Bradley's music was
excellent and he was a
genius. I haven't seen
any arrangers who are in
the same class as
Bradley and 'Boogsie'
Sharpe. It will take a
long time before anyone
can fill Bradley's shoe.
You cannot replace
Bradley. You have to be
dedicated, you have to
love it and you have to
give your life to it.
For instance, I am a pan
tuner and I have been
tunning and playing pan
all my life."
My thanks to When Steel
Talks for this forum,
you have taken the
artform to another level
keep up the good work.

If there was one man that
always give our band arun
for our money, I would have
to say it was Mr.Bradley.
What I liked about it was
that the results were nearly
always very close. As much
as we all rant and rave
about the results every
year, we enjoy the
competition, we live for
that 10 minutes of glory on
stage. With that said I want
to send my condolence and
blessings to Desperadoes,
D'Radoes, Pan Tonic, and the
whole of Clive Bradley's
family and friends. Bradley
will always be missed and
thanks for the years of
friendly competitions.

What interests me is that as
a pan community we always
seem to wait until one of us
has passed on before we give
our due respect, recognition
and honour. Also how about a
database of info on pannists,
tuners, arrangers, pan
builders and leaders of
bands who do sterling work
in the pan community,
outside of TnT, whose names
are not in lights! People
like Goat, Cobo Jack, Ancil
Joseph, Two Left, Gerald
Forsyth et al. Bless up
to pannists everywhere. |

Right now I am in shock....
I cannot believe Mr. Nosie
passed away and I cannot
believe that Clive Bradley
passed away...my brain is
confused right now.They are
now with god and they will
be safe. They are here with
us right now, but we will
meet up with them lalter on
when we pass away. I will
pray for them that they are
safe and that god will keep
them until "we" get there. I
will also pray for Nosie's
family and Bradley's
family....Amen |

Both men were great peaple,
